try curves for that, Image->Colors->Curves. theres alot you can do with
curves. you may want to look at scarse to calibrate your scanner
http://ohm.phys.ualberta.ca/scarse/ and make sure your monitor is
resonable too, http://ohm.phys.ualberta.ca/photo/calibrate/

Try Image->Colors->Levels and play with the levels. Often just a click on the
"auto"-button helps a lot already.
What you can try also is the entries in Image->Colors->Auto->.
