 Should be IMHO enough.

This is usually a very bad idea, as most linux distributions (redhat,
debian, suse...) do not come with a "de"-locale (or jp, ch... etc
locale). Usually something like "german" oder "de_DE" ist much better.

Using "de" might seem to work because gimp and most programs do not care
wether the locale could be set or not and gettext does not require locale
support to work, so messages still get translated (most of the time) even
when the given locale does not exist.

 Is it possible to have Gimp in a different language?

Yes.

 I didn't find anything about that! Did I oversee something?

Before launching Gimp set the LC_* LANG enviro vars. Lot of apps
(under Unix systems, at least) use this method. Read the setlocale man
page.

Problems with language and Gimp

2000-02-29 Thread Carl-Johan Sveningsson

 I just installed the 1.1.11 (win) version and noticed that it set up the language
automatically to Swedish. I'm using Swedish keyboard and there are some Swedish
settings, but the windows is English.
 I found the language files, but I can not set the default language to English.

 If anybody has some idea, what shouls I do...

I don't know if you've got your reply, but I've got something to add so
anyway...

AFAIK, Gimp - and the other gtk apps, and other apps too I guess, decide
which language to use by reading from the "environment variable" $LANG.

Now, try "echo $LANG".
See?

Anyway, to override your default setting (LANG=sv), you could either try
with linuxconf, I think you can set it somewhere there, or just try to
override it by putting the line:

LANG=eng

in your ~/.bashrc (or shell of choise), or another file that you know is
run before your X environment is set up.

If you only want english inside of Gimp, I think it should be possible to
run it as:

LANG=eng gimp

But now, I've got a guestion.
When I use swedish, the menus of my Gimp 1.1.11, most of them read
"Arkiv"...
Thus, the menus are completely unuseable.

Anyone can tell me why, please?

hi,

 LANG=eng gimp
Thanks a lot... meanwhile I solved the problem by renaming the language file dir /sv
to /sv.something and as a default English will be used.

Thanks anyway.

...but my other problem is with version 1.1.15. (win)
I got a very strange cursor in GIMP (a rectangle)... ???
Very strange as a pointer.

Kind regards, Z
