Yes, you would need to edit the /etc/sysconfig/network file and put
those names as the hostnames for the machines.
This step isn't really mandatory though, it is just helpful for
debugging so you know which machines are which.

Hi,

In section 1.4.6 of the assignment (at step 2) we are told to name the UMLs 
just like in the figure given. I guess that means we should name them 
permanently..?

Do you mean the Name option when placing your cursor over a UML?  That
can't be changed as far as I know, and really shouldn't be there.  You
can name your machines using hostname within the UMLs.  Just type
"hostname name" to switch it.  To change the hostname permanently, you
