[GLAM] What does a healthy community look like to you?

2015-08-09 Thread Maria Cruz
Hi all,
(sorry for cross-posting)
The Community Engagement department has launched a new learning campaign[1]
to gather community impressions about what makes a healthy community
online. Users can contribute by answering one of six questions[2] or
submitting a drawing.

*Why take part in this campaign?*
The world is changing. The way we relate to knowledge is transforming. As
the next billion people come online, the Wikimedia movement is working to
bring more users on the wiki projects. The way we interact and collaborate
online are key to building sustainable projects. How accessible are
Wikimedia projects to newcomers today? Are we helping each other
learn? Share your views on this matter that affects us all!

We invite everyone to take part in this learning campaign. Wikimedia
Foundation will distribute one Wikimania Scholarship 2016 among those
participants who are eligible.

As many of you might be working to bring other knowledge communities to the
Wikimedia movement (like museums, libraries, archives, schools and
universities, etc), I think your views as liaisons of the wiki universe
will make the conversation very rich =)

[GLAM] 2016 State of the Commons: Call for submissions

2016-10-12 Thread Maria Cruz
Hi all,
As you may know, since 2014 Creative Commons has published an annual State
of the Commons Report *[1]* that tracks the growth of CC-licensed works on
the Commons.

The report has a double focus:
- Quantitative. Report on growth of CC-licensed content for year-over year
comparisons.
- Qualitative. They want to focus on short, digestible impact stories tied
to real creators around the world, in order to surface vibrance and
usability of the commons and its contributors.

I thought this was a great opportunity for Wikimedians in the GLAM-wiki
realm to share your stories and shine =)

The deadline for this call is October 31. Please find more information in
the link here: https://creativecommons.org/2016/10/04/2016-state-
commons-call-submissions/

... and let me know if you are inspired to contribute!

Best,

Re: [GLAM] Introducing the Wikimedia Resource Center

2017-07-28 Thread Maria Cruz
Hi all,

Last January we announced the roll out of the Wikimedia Resource Center,
[1] a hub intended as a single point of entry for Wikimedians all over the
world to the variety of resources and types of Wikimedia Foundation staff
support they may need to develop new initiatives or expand existing ones.
The Wikimedia Resource Center’s beta version is now live on Meta Wikimedia:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Resource_Center

The redesign of the hub was informed by user-testing sessions at the
Wikimedia Conference 2017 in Berlin and feedback gathered on the talk page
of the hub. We have ordered resources by user types to make them easier to
navigate, and now all Wikimedians can add resources developed by
themselves, other individuals or organizations to the hub. The next step
for the Wikimedia Resource Center is to include features that will enable
Wikimedians to better connect with other Wikimedians that can support them.

We are currently performing more testing and working to incorporate a link
to the Wikimedia Resource Center from different community spaces, and it
will be presented at Wikimania 2017 in Montréal. If you are interested in
taking part in this conversation, please contact me, and if you are coming
to Wikimania, join our session [2] to discuss how we best learn from each
other in the Wikimedia movement.

We want to hear what you think about this new version and would like to
also invite you to submit your comments about it privately, via direct
email to me, or publicly on the talk page.

We’d like to thank Nirzar Pangarkar, Carolyn Li-Madeo and Volker Eckl, key
allies in bringing the new design to life, for all their support in this
project! Also a shout-out goes to James Hare, our technical design intern,
who has done great work of processing all the documentation on the WRC,
understanding its history and goal, and creating amicable interfaces for
contributors.

We are looking forward to more collaborations!

Best,

María

[GLAM] Women in the Wikimedia movement: Conversations with communities

2018-03-05 Thread Maria Cruz
Hi everyone,

In honour of Women’s History Month, the Community Engagement department is
hosting a series of conversations with community members about Women in the
Wikimedia movement
,
and what their experience is like contributing to our projects.

Our conversations will focus on women within three strategic areas of our
work: Programs, Technical Spaces, and Leadership positions. Each
conversation will have two community members presenting on their work, and
15-20 minutes at the end for conversation, follow up questions, and
discussion. The goal of these discussions is to foster understanding of
challenges and inequalities that women face throughout our movement, and to
engage with our communities to help better address them.

These conversations will be online events, streamed on YouTube, and hosted
on BlueJeans. If you would like to participate in these events, please add
the event to your calendar, or sign up on wiki:

   -

Women in Wikimedia programs: Thursday, March 8, 2018, 17:00 UTC (add to
   calendar

)
   (sign up on wiki

   )

Presenters: Monika Sengul-Jones (OCLC Wikipedian in Residence) and Luisina
Ferrante (Wikimedia Argentina education coordinator).

   -

Women in leadership: Wednesday, March 14, 2018, 19:00 UTC (add to
   calendar

)
   (sign up on wiki

   )

Presenters: Mervat Salman (Wiki Arabia 2015 organizer) and Natalia
Szafran-Kozakowska (CEE Spring coordinator, and Polish Wikipedia sysop)

   -

Women in technical spaces: Wednesday, March 21st, 15:00 UTC (add to
   calendar

)
   (sign up on wiki

   )

Presenters: Josephine Lim (Mediawiki contributor) and Ciell (organizer of
all-women hackathon in the Netherlands).

If you find this conversation series interesting, I would greatly
appreciate your support spreading the word. Please feel free to invite
anyone you think might have something to add to the conversations.

I look forward to seeing many of you online!

Best,

María

[GLAM] Introducing Wikimedia Space: A space for movement news and conversations

2019-06-25 Thread Maria Cruz
Hello everyone,

Today, the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Engagement department is
launching Wikimedia Space , a platform for
movement organizers,
affiliates, contributors, partners, and the Foundation to share news,
questions, and conversations.

Learning from others has been the bedrock for development and growth in our
movement. With this platform, we want to promote these sorts of enriching
exchanges by welcoming people from every background to build strong and
diverse communities, breaking down the barriers for entry to our movement,
and focusing our efforts on facilitating collaboration, including from
communities that are new to our movement.

Wikimedia Space is a single place for collaboration, comprising Blog
 and Discuss
hubs. The Blog section provides a
movement-wide platform for project updates, recent events, and shared
learnings. We have designed editorial guidelines that allow everyone to
share their news with others. Wikimedia Space also allows anybody to add an
event, which can be discovered in a calendar
 or a map
 of the movement. We want
this new space to be safe and welcoming, especially for newcomers, and this
is why it is governed by a code of conduct
, and relies on active
community moderation.

Wikimedia Space is currently a prototype, built on WordPress
 and Discourse . While at
present it only operates in English, it will evolve to include multiple
languages in the near future. This project is only possible with your
participation. Spread the news and join Wikimedia Space
!

Read more about the features you’ll find on our blog post. We have also
published posts on how to make this space yours, so it can best serve your
needs. You can find all the documentation for this project on its page on
Meta.

See you at Wikimedia Space!
