So what do you think will happen? If Red Hat is bailing, it seems like
Gluster isn't going to be around much longer, is it?

That's a real bummer, it was a pretty cool tool.

Thanks for attempting to answer!

The discussions seem to have been mainly around EL8 and we are interested in
EL9.
It seems we will need to test CentOS Storage SIG packages against EL9 stable
although they have been built against CentOS 9 Stream.
If there are any compatibility issues, we will need to rebuild Gluster from the
source RPMs.

RH promises ABI compatibility for some libraries, but if I understand

I’m able to rebuild the srpm, if needed, but it’d be convenient if there was a

Re: [Gluster-users] Right way to use community Gluster on genuine RHEL?

2022-08-16 Thread Kaleb Keithley
CentOS's build system and the Community Build Service (CBS) — where the SIG
packages get built — use incarnations of Fedora's Koji. (I presume it comes
from Fedora anyway, but I could be wrong.) E.g. Stream is on
https://kojihub.stream.centos.org/koji and the SIG packages get built on
CBS at https://cbs.centos.org/koji/. There was a different koji instance
for C8 before Stream8 and C7 and earlier, which name escapes me.

The CLIs that packagers use are called fedpkg and koji for Fedora, cbs for
CBS, and I'm not sure what the CLI is for Stream, I don't use that, I don't
work on Stream.

There are a lot of other pieces too, e.g. bodhi is for update management I
think in Fedora, and account management. CentOS had their own account
management for a while then later switched to Fedora's FAS. CBS doesn't use
bodhi, updates are managed by the packagers. There are other backend pieces
that sign the RPMs and build the repos. I honestly don't even know what all
the pieces are.

There are people on #centos-devel (on Libera.chat) like arrfab, bstinson,
hughesjr, and carlwgeorge to name a few, who know all the details. You
should make friends with them. ;-)

But you don't really need all that just to build packages. You could just
set up a Stream8 box and do all your builds, signing, and repo creation on
it. Which is what is/was done for gluster's Debian packages. For bonus
points set it up as a container and use k8s or ansible to fire up an image
and do the builds when you need them.

I'm not sure asking the Storage SIG is the right thing to do. The SIGs are
subject to whatever CentOS decides.

E.g. if you look at C6 vs C7 on http://mirror.centos.org/centos/, the SIG
repos are there (obviously) for C7, but *everything* is gone for C6 (and
earlier) including all the SIG repos. (But it is all achieved on
https://vault.centos.org/ so it's not truly gone.)

If everything in Stream8 and everything related to Stream8 gets removed at
Stream8's EOL by CentOS, that's nothing to do with the SIGs.

I kinda suspect that some Stream8 stuff will stick around for a little
while, but we — i.e. the SIGs — are not part of that decision process.

And I pretty much guarantee that all the build infra around Stream8 will
get torn down pretty quickly and there won't be any further updates to any
of the software.

2022-08-13 Thread Nico van Royen
In our company we're using both the official RHGS and CentOS versions on
(official) RHEL8 and 9 systems and both work great.
The way we install anything is via ansible playbooks/roles and for glusterfs we
do the same. Not just creating the cluster and volumes, also some other stuff
like extending volumes, enabling snapshots etc.

Modified our regular ansible-role slightly to work with CentOS8/Rocky8 (or any
other) and published this on [
https://github.com/royen99/ansible-role-glusterfs |
https://github.com/royen99/ansible-role-glusterfs ] .
To use it with actual RHEL system it needs the codeready-builder repo instead
of the PowerTools repo.
Hope it can be of use to anyone.

I know, I was being something of a smartass. Sorry if that was not clear.

I am interested in trying the latest, community versions of Samba-416 and
Gluster-10 on RHEL. That was why I was asking the question. Sure, I can
absolutely use the Red Hat Gluster Storage software from the official repos,
but I am interested in playing with the latest and greatest community bits...
but on RHEL. I *can* use CentOS, but I prefer to use genuine RHEL. I was
wondering if there was a "right" way of doing so. I am playing with the CentOS
Gluster-10 and Samba-416 repos just to learn. It looks like they work just fine
once I enabled EPEL and those CentOS repos.

I was more checking to see if there were any problems just enabling the CentOS
Storage SIG repos on RHEL. So far, it does not appear that there are problems.
So far, it seems to be working.

Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate them.

The only "official" supported RPMs I know about come from Red Hat with a
RHGS subscription.

Community packages are built from the upstream source by volunteers; they
are built on third party build systems, e.g. SUSE OBS, Ubuntu Launchpad,
Fedora Koji, and CentOS CBS. The packages built in CentOS CBS work on
CentOS and RHEL, and probably on Rocky too.

Those all work. Building from source is maybe the hardest, but it's not
that hard.

Packages are nice because they're easy to install, update, and remove.

What is the "correct" way of using gluster on RHEL 8 or, preferably, 9?

There isn't any one correct or official way. If packages make sense to you,
use them. If building from source works for you, do that. Building your own
RPMs gives you the best of both.

The glusterfs.spec (and related files) is at
https://git.centos.org/rpms/glusterfs/ if you want to build your own rpms.

2022-07-17 Thread Péter Károly JUHÁSZ
Hi,

I don't know what is the correct way but what I did on my RHEL7 (I assume 8
and 9 is more or less the same):

  * Added this repo
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/storage/x86_64/gluster-9/
  * Then yum install glusterfs-server

It works for me.

Regards,
Stone
