Yes, it should work. Support for this feature was added recently in
gettext 0.19.8 [1]
and GNOME 3.22 uses this version [2].

I use mostly Lokalize (1.5) to translate my po files, and it highlights
soft hyphens in original and translated strings as well:

Here the highlighted characters have a soft hyphen between them.

Maybe it's worth a try.

Is Hitori a new GNOME 3-14 module?

I just spotted Hitori on the 3-14 statistics page:

However I can't see it in the current list of release modules:

Is Hitori really going to be part of 3-14, or is its presence among the

I tend to agree with Piotr on this, we can consider these strings as
forgotten to be marked. This case does not need to be approved.
Improving the text during fixing does not change the big picture: the
program was saying something not translatable.

(But next week I'll be a big NO stamp :))

Those strings are from an older release of the documentation, which is
installed on your system. We can't make the translation of those better,
so no need to worry about them.

The current po file is generated from the current git master branch and
it does not contain those strings because these .page files now have a
.stub extension too. This usually means the content of the files is not
ready for use yet. In this case they are not current anymore, so they
are put back in a need a lot of (re)work state.
Final releases of the documentation don't contain .stub files and their
content is therefore not translatable.

 
 Are you sure you're working with an up-to date clone of the module?
 
 
 Did 'git pull' yesterday, but will double-check again, yes.  I'm new
 with Mallard and too lazy to start reading the whole documentation bunch :'(

If you run yelp C/index.page in the git clone, you can see that the
current documentation does not contain these topics anymore. You can
stop worrying :).

The bottom line is this: always check the same version of the
translation and the documentation.
This means you would clone the git repository and compile the module,
then use yelp gnome-help/ru/index.page to start checking the current
content.

These are not the translators faults. Please concentrate on the ones
that say does not have a semicolon (';') as trailing character. If
there are no such strings, then you are fine :).

Hi all

Fear not, this is just fallout from the last server upgrade [0].
The systems were reinstalled, and the new versions of gettext and
itstool d-l previously used fell victims of that.

This caused the String additions mails we got from on 18th and the
20th and the image hashes that appeared in the docs.

By now the regressions should be sorted out and everything should work
just like before the upgrade. Thanks for the quick work, Andrea!

 The new feature adds just a few new translatable strings: a few error
 messages and a couple XML tags (the XML tags being the most important).

 I don't expect this is a big deal, but thought I should ask anyway
 before setting alarm bells off.

 The master branch commit to be cherry-picked is:

 Looking at the commit this really doesn't look like a bit deal and
 having this in Ubuntu LTS seems reasonable and important.

In theory, it should correctly determine your language from the LANG
environment variable, then download everything that is not archived to a
local directory ~/gnome-translations

We talked about this problem with the web team during GUADEC, and they
know of it, just didn't had time/incentive to solve it.

In theory, there is a few things to be done for the export/import

obsolete), and they promised to take a look at it.

Yeah, about that.

We don't really have a policy as to how long can a module be there -
it's sort of a hospice home for unmaintained projects. In case some of
them would see renewed interest, it's easier to move it than
deleting-readding, that's the rationale.

However, we still lack on detecting if a module is archived and
therefore droppable.

So I created this little script: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5742769/
which gives a few tips regarding archived modules (and a bunch of false
positives because of f.d.o. modules):

to fix all of them :).

Gnome 3.8 translations are open!

Hi all

I'm happy to announce that the translation for GNOME 3.8 is now open, 
with reorganized categories:


http://l10n.gnome.org/releases/gnome-3-8/

There is also a new category called Legacy Desktop at the bottom of the 
Extras set, in case there will be more releases of the old UX modules.


Thanks for everyone involved in this reorganization: Gil, Johannes, 
Claude - and all the patient translators :).


This reorganization is not set in stone - if you see something odd, feel 
free to bring it up here or on the Bugzilla. I'm pretty sure there are 
some modules that could be higher or lower in the list. Our sketches can 
be found here[1].


I hope that this is a good start to help you prioritize any upcoming 
work, especially for teams with low coverage.

I'd like to request opinions on this bug[1]. This is about developing a 
feature in damned-lies to make it easier for maintainers of extra 
modules to communicate upcoming release dates to translators. Currently 
translators have hard time to decide which extra modules to translate, 
as information on their next scheduled release date is scarce. I'd like 
to change this situation by making it quicker and easier to communicate 
this information.


The base idea from maintainer point of view is this:

We could extend the .doap files in repositories with a new element, so 
that you could communicate the scheduled release date of your project by 
committing a single line to your project tree. After that damned-lies 
would take over presenting the information towards translators.


If you maintain modules outside of the core set, I'd like to hear your 
opinion under the bug: would you use this method, would it make it 
easier for you to notify translators compared to emailing gnome-i18n? Is 
this a technical issue at all, or a people's mentality problem?


This is only an idea yet, but without developers approval/interest it 
makes no sense to implement it, that's why I'm asking opinions now.

Request for comments: Stop translating obsolete desktop docs

Hi Documentation team

During GUADEC we were faced a problem: there is a huge amount of text in 
GNOME to translate[1]. This can be discouraging for new contributors, 
and we came up with different ideas to solve this for UI and for docs.


A big part of the documentation is still in legacy DocBook format, which 
are hopefully going to be rewritten soon, are mostly outdated and 
unmaintained, and in general not that helpful for users as the new 
Mallard style documents.


I have the feeling that it does not make sense anymore to expose these 
documentations for translation in damned-lies[2], because any effort to 
translate these would be wasted for the above reasons.
So my proposal is to remove DocBook documentation templates from the 3.8 
statistics page. This would not affect other packages than desktop[2], 
neither would existing translations - only future translations.


What does the Documentation Team think about this? The final word should 
be yours, so if you feel the integrity of GNOME Documentation or 
something else requires to translate whatever we have, we should be fine 
with that too.


This idea is not meant to judge your efforts as insufficient, but to 
offer translators only those templates which are likely to actually help 
our users. In other words, where it makes most sense to invest our time 
and more importantly: new translators time, who might not realize that 
they started translating some soon-to-be-rewritten material.


I'd also like to hear translators opinions too. What do those 
translators think who were not present at the GUADEC BoF? Back then, 
opinions were not unanimous about this proposal.

Havin them listed in a webpage sound more tricky, because somebody
should maintain it (removing already released modules), and translators
can forget to check it. Sending an email to the coordinator and/or the
team's mail list (and also ton i18n list) would be better

Damned-lies obviously needs to deal with this in a clever way, but the 
basic idea is that we should see this information in a new column on 
http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/LL/gnome-extras/ui/


Once we have the data, our coder hero* implementing this feature can do 
anything with it: display on the website, put into an RSS feed or a 
daily mail, or all of these. But let's not dive deep into painting the 
bikeshed yet, please. I'd like to hear if developers - those who are 
occasionally mailing us reminders and especially those who do not - like 
the idea. Let's stay with this and only this topic :).


*: unknown as of now, to be honest. Maybe a GSoC student next year... so 
this idea is a really long shot.

This is a great idea, but I have a question about this new feature:
assuming that it finally gets implemented, and maintainers use it,
how would translators be noticed about the release date of the
module? It would be great if DL could send an email to the team's
mailing list or to the coordinator. Just showing the planed release
date of the module would be useless.

to change already casted votes, if you had saved the link given after 
voting. I guess none of the voters did this, so I'll go mail them the

output and on d-l, so approval 1/2.

the order is enough, like:


Translators: first %s is the given name of the contact, the second %s is 
the family name. To change the order, use %2$s %1$s

Just fixed the mahjongg error. The problem was someone added a second
mahjongg help domain with the renamed path (/mahjongg is
now /gnome-mahjongg).


That was me, sorry.
Recently, I got a translation of the mahjongg help, noticed that the 
mahjongg directory of gnome-games was renamed to gnome-mahjongg[1], and 
I thought we should follow it on d-l, but keep the pre-3.6 stats. Never 
thought there is such a limitation, thanks for sorting it out.

Hmm, strange. Ok, I will tell him, but I cannot do that right away,
I mean not before the template file from 2.8 script-fu will be reverted
too.

What is common with this 61 number ? Why was my file screwed in February
down to 61 strings and now in May the template file and the rest of all
languages also screwed down to 61 strings ? I find hard to believe
(though possible) that in February it was just the committer fault.

So, when will be the 2.8 script-fu template reverted ?


You are right, generating a new template results in 62 strings.

There seems to be a bug in intltool-update --pot that only
extracts strings which immediately follow a '(', so

(_foo  ends up in the template

but

_foo  doesn't.

At least that's the pattern I found when looking at the pot file
and the scheme source files.

To the folks on gnome-i18n@gnome.org: did you ever hear of this
issue? Can you investigate it? I'm sure there are more i18n experts
on gnome-i18n@gnome.org than on gimp-developer-list ;)

Seems like a recent change in intltool causes this, which makes the 
scheme string extraction done by xgettext instead of intltools built-in 
and dropped parser.


In turn, http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/gettext.html#Scheme 
says that the gettext shorthand for scheme strings is (_foo), so I 
think your source files should be modified to conform this notation.

It was an error, now corrected.

Also several other modules were added to the gnome-3-6 set, and others 
were moved to the extras and external-deps sets, to better match what 
the release team calls GNOME[1], so in theory, damned-lies should be 
in sync.


I'm sorry that I was not able to do this earlier (yes, this means that 
all the 3.4 status percentages are lies).

Upside is that users don't need many registrations and know how to use 
all the different bug trackers, only one.
Downside is that we still need to require a registration, because we got 
a lot of spam in free for all mode.


We had a few other tries to tackle this problem, the best in terms of 
number of submitted bugs was a simple Drupal-based hack that integrated 
into ubuntu.hu, which allowed only basic features, but one could use it 
without any extra registration or login, so you are right, eliminating 
registration is extremely important. Also keeping it as simple as 
possible, because this will be used by users who do not really know/care 
about the working of developers, but they are willing to contribute if 
you make it easy for them.


Another important thing is that your users won't use anything that 
doesn't speak their language. But if it does, you will drown in the 
useful bug reports :).

Agreed, this won't play nicely in some languages.
