Hi, Oh, darn, and I was updating master all the time, leaving gcompriogoo unmaintained. Shouldn't be master branch the one logically always on the top of development? Are there any other project with not-master as their master? Just want to know, how much work I will have to do again. This should be policy if you ask me. I agree with you, but GCompris developers have warned several times in this list. Anyway, you can use most of those translations into the gcomprixogoo branch. I do not think the term error message used in the discussion thus far had a clear enough definition - I do think people wrote about different issues. Perhaps this could be included in the translation software, I don't think it's difficult to create a plugin for gtranslator which marks certain strings in a different way (colors, whatever...); however I'm not a hacker myself. There's no automatic way to split errors from the GUI strings, so it'll be a huge amount of work for programmers (and require sustained maintenance work), while the benefit to translators is not significant IMHO. But I'd really like to see all the useless schema strings separated out. IMHO error and schema strings should not be translated. Whenever I try to find help in Spanish when a software crashes, I usually get few or null feedback from the error in Spanish (in my case), but tones of pages and websites when I paste the same error in English into Google. And the normal user will never search for those errors, only advanced users, so I guess we're not helping them much translating error and schema messages. Besides, I bet there are hundreds of strings in GNOME that the final user will NEVER, ever see. But how would you reliably distinguish between error messages and non-error messages? I'm not convinced that this can be done without requiring unreasonable work from programmers. I guess we should distinguish between two kind of errors: * Errors from the application, which should be translated and the user will, for sure, see * Internal errors, usually shown at the command line, which the user *may* see, but which are the ones I mentioned that when you search for them in other languages, rather than English, you can't find info. I was about to say some thing along these lines, but you summarised it better than what I would have done. I just want to added that every time I use Transifex I find its UI very confusing and things that can be simply achieved with damned-lies are either impossible or done in a very convoluted way. I fail to say what features Transifex offers that we need; we neither need the complex multi-project multi-team multi-workflow setup nor the near useless online translation tool (if we ever need one, then IMHO only Pootle is worthy consideration currently). I agree with most of what has been written before, but I'd like to make a call to see what functionalities do we miss in l10n: * commiting files from the web interface * sycn between projects not hosted in git.gnome.org What else? Claude already said that the first point was already being discussed. Could you please refresh my mind about other points? This topic was further discussed on the GNOME legal-list with Luis Villa. Also, there was a change done in the structure of the GNOME Translation Project coordination. Previously, the project was formally led by two Spokes Persons who were also senior members of the extended Coordination Team. Now, the Spokes Person status has been obsoleted in favor of a larger Coordination Team. Cathedral, bazaar models and DL
Hi all, as a consequence of the Slovak GTP status, I also asked my team whether they are happy with our model and so on. Looks like we will probably try a bazaar like model, and I would like to know how the rest of the teams are modelled. In any case, in DL only one person can reserve a module. May this be a problem? Besides, I'd like to ask, if someone sends a comment over a module without having reserved the module first, does DL send an email to the team? Thank you very much. Will the translation of enabled, disabled, and not found vary in

Absolutely, since there exists something we call grammatical gender in many
many languages:

However, as long as those adjectives like enabled or disabled aren't
incorporated into a sentence or sentence fragment, but are placed in a
string of their own, it's often the case in i18n not to qualify per
instance and respect various gender and declension forms, but to use
a general, one-gender, one-case term that refers to all strings with the
appropriate meaning. (In my West Slavic language [Czech], we often make use
of the neuter gender singular nominative case for that purpose.)
Nevertheless, I wouldn't count that in best i18n/l10n practices, really.
In the end, a context is what counts the most for translators. Also, I
think that Orca is the excellent example of providing a good portion of
useful context information to their translators, so thanks for that.
I would'n have said better, that's +1 for Spanish.

Hi, long ago I sent an update of xkeyboard-config to the translation project [1], it was accepted and updated, but l10n seems to still have an old copy [2]. Is it updating the stats and/or getting the file from translationproject correctly? Jorge, l10n.gnome.org does not pick the file from the TP, but from the module main repository. That is why you may encounter a delay between TP submission and stats update. You can always use the Browse link just after the branch name on the module page, and look for the es.po file in the module repository to see if your file has been committed. I already registered an account at transifex and followed a tutorial, but I can't see the translating button nor where to send offline translations. Problems with git
Hi, I'm sorry to ask help about git, but I cannot find nor figure out how to solve this. I tried to update gnome-applets-2-26, nautilus-2-26, yelp-2-26 and some other branches but I get the error: fatal: attempt to push into a shallow repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly I'm switching to the branch with git checkout --track -b origin/gnome-2-26 and apparently everything goes well until I push the commit. Weird status for several modules and releases
Hi, since the migration to git I noticed several modules which status is weird, for example there are two bug-buddy user-guides, both with 0 strings, like gok user manual, [1] and I also noticed few new untranslated and fuzzy strings for old releases (both at UI and manuals). I tried to update those but it says everything is up to date, so I guess is a problem with DL/intltool. Also, at least one member of the Spanish team reported that the migration of gnome-commander left many strings untranslated and fuzzy, something I fixed uploading the last po he uploaded to DL, but this issue has/will probably happen with other modules and teams. If however you could get á in your keyboard layout by pressing a single key (that is, no need for dead key), then the accelerator would simply work. Is it a GTK+ bug or a Xorg bug? GTK+ could be modified so that when it sees _árbol, it would actually register it as if it work _arbol, so pressing Alt+a would simply work. The downside is that it would not be able to distinguish between áäãâà, etc. Would that be a realistic problem however? Would we want users to have to press Alt+dead_acute+a in order to get to the accelerator? With some layouts, you get dead_acute when you press AltGr+somekey, so the full keyboard sequence is Alt+(AltGr+somekey+a). I think I have seen a report about this but I cannot find it at gtk+, component: input-methods. It might actually be a report at freedesktop.org, so you might want to have a look there. The sequence Alt+dead_key+char might actually fail due to the X server cutting the sequence once the deadkey is pressed. libwnck, metacity and window actions
Hi, some time ago several actions were added to the window behaviour, Unmaximize and Unminimize, in several translation teams we used to translate it Restore, although some teams translate both as Restore, we have a problem pointed out long ago: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2004-February/msg00173.html *Have a window in Original State, Maximize it first and Minimize it next. *Now right click on the Iconized window. It will show UnMinimize as well as UnMaximize. Where in if the user clicks UnMaximize nothing happens on the screen. But the next right click shows UnMinimize and Maximize. *Now click Maximize, Nothing shows up on the window, except the Next right click shows UnMinimize and UnMaximize. Isn't it a usability issue there? We still have this issue, we can have both actions at the same time, is it gonna be fixed? is there any workaround? The tests are integrated into Pootle and we'll integrate them into Virtaal, our new localisation tool. pofilter pofilter is a tool we at Translate.org.za wrote in our early days to check the quality of translations at a technical level. Machines are so much better at finding these types of errors then humans. Yes you can use grep, I do, but the escaping and wrapping can mess with anyone trying that. Actually you should use pogrep from the Translate Toolkit anyway. With the new gconf test we're sitting at 47 tests. Quite a lot of effort has gone in to reduce false positive and to make the test adapt to the punctuation found in various languages. How to use it the new gconf test Picking on the Spanish team whose bug Andre pointed out: Spanish has 35 strings with potential issues which I found using pofilter. Follow these instructions to install the toolkit from SVN or wait till be release v1.3: http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/installation#installing_from_subversion Here are the steps I followed: 1) Download the PO files for Spanish: http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/es/gnome-2-26/ui.tar.gz 2) Untarred them into gnome-2-26-es/ 3) Find the faulty string by running the gconf test: pofilter --gnome -t gconf gnome-2-26-es gnome-2-26-es-gconf 4) Edit and review the PO files found in gnome-2-26-es-gconf 5) Merge the fixes back into the PO files pomerge -t gnome-2-26-es gnome-2-26-es-gconf gnome-2-26-new 6) New updated files are in gnome-2-26-new commit these fixes the same way as you would normally do it. Marcel, this is currently the same behavior used on Italian team, of course it has the advantages you listed, but please note there is at least one shorcoming: the inability of currently assigned translator to work on assigned/maintained module You can lock a translation in current l10n.gnome.org too, just reserve the translation immediately after commit. But what will happen if someone will not able to update him/her own translation in time for a release? GNOME Desktop is time based, so some translators in our (Italian) team start working after the string freeze. Sometimes they don't have the time to complete it, so the module is temporary assigned to another person. In any case, the coordinator or the person with the svn account is still the person in charge to commit the translations, and I belive many teams still work with their old workflow, i.e. sending the pot files to somewhere, and coordinating efforts from their respective mailing lists. The problem is that chronojump contains a unicode char in a filename (/web/html_created_no_edit/images/chronojump_esquema_07 (còpia).dia), and when the script try to update the repo (with default C lang), it chokes in this file and exit. Hi, what's wrong with the module bug-buddy-doc for GNOME 2.24? for the full language release (Spanish) it shows a 50% translation status, but at the detailed bug-buddy page it shows 100% (as it should).
