String freeze break request for gnome-panel ( big code freeze break)
Hi there, Over the past week, I've worked on the panel to make sure the fallback mode would be a bit more maintainable in 3.x. This includes a port to GSettings, and more (see below). Also a bit of a warning: fredp wants me to finish the minimize difference between fallback shell bug, which possibly means a few other strings (that are all in gnome-shell, in the user menu). But I don't want to block things on this. For translators, the impact is: + 13 fuzzy strings + 4 new strings Of those 17 strings, 15 are in schemas (so really not visible, except in dconf-editor; and l10n.gnome.org has magic to let you ignore those), and 2 are error messages displayed in extremely unlikely cases: Cannot create initial panel layout.\n Launcher location is not set, cannot load launcher\n The rationale for the (admittedly way too late) change is that gnome-panel has a strong compatibility story in general (2.32.x can load a 2.0.x configuration), and this comes with a price, given the way the panel is configurable. So for 3.0, we don't want to have to deal with gconf configuration; which means the port to GSettings is quite important. The other important changes in the branch I have are the following (they do not impact translations): - Remove popup menu for items in applications menu - Remove drawers - Remove compatibility with 2.x configuration - Start 3.0 panel with brand new configuration - Drop per-applet Lock setting - Support 3.0 lockdown settings - Correctly display Lock screen menu item - Make it easy for applets to store their settings in GSettings It's all in http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-panel/log/?h=wip/3.0-freeze-break (I didn't cc gnome-doc-list, btw, based on feedback from Shaun) Again, this all happens way too late and I'm very well aware of that. Because otherwise we more or less agreed to not translate messages that are thrown to the command-line (using g_warning/error) as it makes it more difficult to debug things. Hrm, they are from g_printerr(). If the right thing to do is to not mark them for translations, then I can do this and that would only leave the schemas-related strings. But when we upgrade Evolution, any new option will be assumed to be FALSE in any pre-existing account. So AFAICT it has to be a *negative* option, along the lines of Fetch messages in one part. cc'ing gnome-i18n since the i18n team is the one approving string changes. I guess the configuration also appears in the UI; if yes, you should notify the doc team too (gnome-doc-list), but that should be fine. Finally, here's a first approval for hard code freeze break, assuming translators are happy with the string change. We didn't manage to commit to GNOME git yet though and I doubt it would be easier on other repositories. It's something that could be considered in long-term, also for some freedesktop modules. alternatively, GNOME could have a private Clutter core repository for i18n purposes alone - after all, we're using Git. We do that for some other modules and it works OK. Note: As stated before I am not so much concerned about clutter itself but about our general policy on handling external repositories. For git it might kind of work but for other things like launchpad it could become worse. I think the right solution is to improve l10n.gnome.org so that it can interacts with other platforms (like transifex) where there is a team control. Alternatively we can also investigate something similar to where transifex is heading to: host the po files on l10n.gnome.org and add some autofoo magic that would download the po files from there during 'make dist'. It's definitely not something that, imho, is mandatory for the 2.28 release; so it can wait for the next release. I never intend to release that; Sabayon was way too broken in that time period :( I'd say that for the release team, it's fine to consider 2.25.0 as non-2.26. But since it's mainly an issue for translators now, I guess it's up to them to decide what's better for them. (Federico: I guess it's okay to have a gnome-2-26 branch that is just a dead-end ;-)) We could also consider that GNOME 2.26 used the gnome-2-24 sabayon branch, regarding strings. Does it make sense? I guess it works. It'd be a bit painful if there were still some releases to be expected for 2.26 (since it'd mean translator would have to push their translations to this branch), but that shouldn't change anything now. Hi all,
I just branched gnome-{desktop,menus,panel,session}, libgweather and
libwnck for 2.26, with the usual gnome-2-26 name.
Note to translators: the gnome-panel branch doesn't contain the string
freeze break. I also had to mark some strings as fuzzy to pass the
post-commit check for po files. This has been done for:
+ gnome-panel: bn, ku (the strings don't exist anymore in the code,
though)
+ libwnck: ne

Hi translators, It seems the release notes will be late one more time :/ We're all aware how bad this is... Anyway, it's important that you know the status so that you can at least try to plan things accordingly. At this point, I would guess it's likely there'll be only one week or even just a few days to translate the release notes.
