Resigning as coordinator for the Dutch (nl) team
Hi all, Since I've not been spending enough time on the Dutch (nl) translation effort, I'm resigning as coordinator for the Dutch (nl) team. The new coordinator, as agreed with the active members of the Dutch team, will be Hannie Dumoleyn, who has been an active translator and committer for quite some time now. Thank you for your continued efforts, Hannie! To the coordination team: I've already updated the roles in DL. Urgent: release notes are not easily found on the Gnome websites (and please think of the poor translators!)
Hi marketing team, Congratulations with the Gnome 3 release and the nice web presence we got ourselves for this shiny new release! There is a problem, though: the release notes are not easily found on the gnome.org or gnome3.org websites. I couldn't find a link at all even. FYI, the release notes are published in many languages over here: http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.0/ The release notes, compiled by Allan Day, contain lots of useful information about Gnome 3. It would be a real shame if people can't find these. Many translation teams have worked *very* hard to translate these. Please don't underestimate the amount of effort translation teams have put into translating this document. It would be very disappointing if their work goes unnoticed. So, my urgent question is: please make sure visitors of the Gnome websites are pointed in the right direction! (Please keep the gnome-i18n list Cc'ed, since many translators don't read the marketing list on a regular basis. Banshee has a new stable-2.0 branch
Hi Gabriel, [cc: gnome-i18n, banshee-list] Below you'll find a couple of questions regarding Banshee's branches and i18n. While updating the Dutch translation for Banshee I noticed recently created the stable-2.0 branch. However this branch is not yet configured at http://l10n.gnome.org/module/banshee/ and hence I wonder which branches should be included on l10n.gnome.org. Please let the gnome-i18n list know. Also, please keep the CC as I don't read banshee-list. Fwiw, I pushed my updated translations to three branches: master, stable-1.8 and stable-2.0. Is this correct? Will there be any further 1.8.x releases in the future? I successfully combined it with egrep to do the job. 21 means that the stderr (file descriptor 2) gets redirected () to stdout (file descriptor 1), so that subsequent programs (e.g. grep) actually see the input when your shell pipes git's stdout into grep's stdin. About reverting translations: don't bother, the translators will update those, and by reverting you might revert other (intentional) translation changes as well. Why adding context causes translations to become fuzzy (was: Two bugs for translatable strings)

Real-life example: Unknown in gnome-panel could be either inconnu or inconnue in French. The translator originally looked at the source code to make the correct choice. For the new string this choice cannot be made automatically, so a fuzzy marker is required here to catch the translator's attention. Hi, Would it be possible to send out a mail to our l10n team's mailing list whenever the status of a module changes on DL/Vertimus, e.g. when someone claims a translation, or adds a comment? What do other release team members think about this? Is this the new policy? If so, who decided this? Is this documented somewhere? While this may work in this specific case, this is by no means a generally
acceptable solution to this kind of problem. What happens if both arguments
are strings? Or both are numbers? Or if you had 4 format specifiers? Well,
it would break horribly. So we need something more reliable :)
In C, sprintf() supports reordering format specifiers using %n$f, where n
is a number. Python does not support the %1$d syntax to its built-in
sprintf-like string formatting operator, %, but it does support named
parameter substitution when a mapping (e.g. a dictionary instance) is passed
to the % operator.
This may sound cryptic, so let's illustrate this with a few examples:
'the role is %(role)s and the level is %(level)d' % {'role': 'test',
'level': 3}
'the role is test and the level is 3'
If translators decide the order has to be changed, this will result in
something like this:
'the level is %(level)d and the role is %(role)s' % {'role': 'test',
'level': 3}
'the level is 3 and the role is test'
This approach works in all cases, even in the case that the two format
specifiers are the same (e.g. both are numbers).
There is one downside though: translators MUST NOT translate the keywords
(level and role in my case), since those are the keys used to lookup the
value in the mapping passed to the % operator. But then, translators can
just as well mess up format specifiers that are used in the traditional,
positional way, e.g. by translating '%.3f' to %.0f', which will result in
the fraction being removed upon display. So... a short translator notice
should be fine to avoid this problem.
