I agree, that is optimum for searching, and I would say the better
method for that use case.
I use the faux time stamps to force my cash account, which has lots of
activity, to sort properly so there is never a negative balance. (which
is impossible with cash) I also don't always get to enter
I often follow a strict text structure in the Notes field, memo fields or
description field which I can then use to help searching for certain types
of transactions. This method is extremely customizable to anyone's needs.

Transactions are ordered by when they were entered. (there might be a
few rules that break that in some registers)
You can use the NUM field to force a custom ordering. (if not otherwise
used for actual transaction Numbers)
Since GnuCash doesn't expose a time field for the entry, I use NUM
Well, this morning I goofed and deleted what I thought was a zero value
split in another register and in so doing deleted an entire entry, other
splits and all, in my main checkbook register. As it worked out there
were a number of transactions and transfers to subaccounts on Monday,
Dec 28, and
