Re: : importing

Maybe I was just lucky, but I selected the first choice in the QIF
export which was all accounts including categories and it did it all in
one pass (and that was for a file that had 20 years of data, 3 banks
with checking and savings in each and 4 credit cards).

I fully expected to have to break the file into several separate exports
like you're referring to but figured it was worth a try. I've been using
the result now for several months and have yet to discover any errors.

Since you have already found the qfx importer you are almost there. Each
QIF file contains only transactions from one financial institution and
probably only for one or two accounts.

You simply follow the steps that appear after starting the importer. It
will first ask you which account or accounts you want the transactions to
apply to if it has never seen a file from that bank, then it will create a
list of all the new transactions and try to get you to decide where you
want them to go. Finally it will actually import them when you click ok.

If you are unsure which other account to assign, leave the transaction
unassigned so you can fix it later.

I always save my data just before any import so I can go back and try again
if I decide that I made a mistake.

Re: Save File to Dropbox

2018-03-11 Thread Dave H
If you're talking about not being able to see it under "Places"on the left
of the file open popup form, you have to build up the path manually in
Windows anyway :-)

Click on "Windows C:" under places, then double-click "Users" in the right
hand panel, then double-click your user name in the right hand panel - keep
doing this until you've navigated to Dropbox and whatever folder in Dropbox
you saved your data file in, select it and click open.

I have a similar setup using Dropbox on a number of laptops running
Windows, MacOS and Ubuntu, only I use a file synchroniser (FreeFileSync) to
sync only my GnuCash data file between pc's as I can't be bothered synching
all the log files etc that go with it.

I also sync my saved report configurations and preferences separately.

Cheers Dave H.

Re: Save File to Dropbox

2018-03-11 Thread Nelson Handcock
I use Dropbox for my GN file and I've had no trouble.

I installed the dropbox app for Windows 10, set up the account and
specified which dropbox folders to synch, and I could see the dropbox
folder in Windows Explorer and also the GN file - no problems at all.

Perhaps open the dropbox app on your Windows PC and check all the settings,
etc...

I usually open my GN file by just double-clicking on the Gnucash app - it
automatically opens the last file (which is my case is the one on the
dropbox folder). Occasionally I've had to open an archive file - and I just
double-click on the file in Windows Explorer.

There is a setting that allows you to display income accounts with reversed

"debit" and "credit" have the opposite sense in the same way as
"positive" and "negative" do but are not the same thing UNLESS you have
specified that. In traditional accounting "negative" refers to an
account having a balance in the opposite sense of what is expected. For

An account of type "income" would normally have a credit balance.

Save File to Dropbox

2018-03-11 Thread EMDNP via gnucash-user
I would like to save my GnuCash files to dropbox so I can edit across both my

Saving to Dropbox hasn't been a problem on my Macbook. I am able to simply
select the Dropbox folder in the file tree when opening or saving from

Macbook, Dropbox isn't on the list. It only shows C: and shortcuts to
desktop, etc. I can clearly see dropbox in my normal Windows File Explorer
but not GnuCash.

How can I save to or open from Dropbox in GnuCash on PC?

Accounting as you learned it sounds like I learned it:
Debits = Credits (or Debits - Credits = 0)
Assets + Expenses = Liabilities + Equities + Income
Most transactions increase the values of the accounts. For example, if
you buy something for $100 on credit, both Assets and Liabilities
increase by $100.

But GnuCash, instead of having a balance like that, instead sets up
Debits + Credits = 0
Assets + Expenses + Liabilities + Equities + Income = 0
If you buy something on credit, Assets increase by $100 and Liabilities
decrease by $100 -- i.e, Liabilities become more negative, and -400 is
less than -300.

You can make this go away, mostly, in Edit » Preferences » Accounts.
Under "Reverse Balance Accounts", select "credit accounts".

You'll get used to this after a while.

Unfortunately, some reports don't honor this preference, or their
treatment of it is buggy, so they will show credit accounts as negative
after you make this change. Income Statement and Balance Sheet reports
get it right; the General Ledger report (as opposed to the General
Ledger tool) puts the wrong sign on totals.

The most likely cause is these transactions were not entered via the business
features, but perhaps via an import or directly manually.

The solution would be to tell gnucash these payments should be linked to the
proper invoices.
