This mailing list is not for official accounting or legal advice. It is for how
to use GnuCash. (and help with any quirks, bugs, etc.)

Everyone’s situation is different, influenced by their personal circumstance
and their local laws. You should seek the advice of a *local* CPA and/or
business attorney.

We can’t (and shouldn’t) explain what you *should* do, but we can help you with
*how* to make the accounting entries (and run the reports) using GnuCash once
you’ve gotten that professional advice. (if the User Guide and Help manual
don’t answer those questions for you)

Regards,
Adrien

Interesting. I seem to recall someone instructing people to use only
lists.gnucash.org for such searches, and was not aware of the reference you
cite. A search of the wiki only shows an example for lists.gnucash.org on the
mailing lists page. I must be showing my age...

In the mid-1959s in New York State, a friend of mine and I wanted to
start a company and we were both under 18 years of age; we were still
high-school students. We did not want to issue stock, but there were
other problems:

1.) Banks would not allow us to have a checking account until at least
one of us was over 18.

2.) We had to file a declaration in City Hall called a Certificate for
Doing Business Under An Assumed Name, in which we had to state that we
were (legal) infants. An attorney was required to do this, and a fee
paid to the county clerk to file it.

3.) To set up a legal corporation, and issue stock (not listed on a
stock exchange), we needed a board of directors all of whom were adults
(i.e., over 21 years of age). A corporation like that was authorized to
issue up to 200 shares of stock, although the board of directors, if
authorized by a majority of stockholders, could authorize the issuance
of more shares. We never did set up the corporation.

I do not know if any of that applied in other jurisdictions, and I do
not know if the laws are still the same as 50 years ago: I pretty-much
doubt it.

In my Assets I have a placeholder account called LLC Companies.  Under
that I have an account for each company that I own or have partial
ownership.  Money I put in is applied there with the other side being
the checking account (or wherever I took the money).

But, that's just me sitting here in the State of Washington in the good
ol' US of A.

You can start out that way and then move the accounts however the CPA
decides they want to see it.

Those are questions for your CPA.  Depending on your locality, the rules
may differ (and the CPA might have their own opinion of how they want it

[GNC] Bootstrapping and Company Ownership.

2019-01-15 Thread jason
Good morning,

Currently, I am learning to have a legal entity (I am 19 years old, 21 years
old is the minimum legal age to have a legal entity). Which allows me to
have access to Series A Funding and so on.

My goal is to use GnuCash to record Company Ownership.

I am planning to bootstrap this company early (January, 2019) with $100,000.

Thus, the journal entry

1. Cash DB $100,000
2. Paid-in Capital:Jason CR $100,000

*However, I have a question, how do you properly manage the Company
Ownership?*

By the time I reach 21 years old, I will register my company as legal
entity. Thus, Series A Funding.

I am willing to let go 20% of Company Ownership to an Invenstor or some
Investors at $5,000,000 valuation (Cash DB $1,000,000). *How should I record
this and what account should I make?*

[GNC] [MAINT] server upgrade planned Feb 3, 2019 1200-2300 US/EST

2019-01-15 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi,

PLANNED MAINTENANCE
WHAT: Upgrading Operating System on Code
WHEN: Feb 3, 2019 1200-2300 US/EST (1700-0400 UTC)

tl;dr: I am planning to upgrade the OS on code.gnucash.org on February
3, 2019 from 1200-2300 US/EDT (1700-0400 UTC). During this
time, git master, wiki, email/mailman, and gncbot/irc logs will
all be unavailable. I'll be on #gnucash IRC for real-time
updates and notices.

Long version:

The GnuCash "everything" server is getting a little long on the tooth,
and to enable some upgraded build tools I plan to upgrade the server
from Fedora 25 to Fedora 29. I plan to do this upgrade on Sunday,
February 3, 2019, starting somewhere around 12:00 noon US/EST (although
my personal schedule might push that back, hense the long maintenance
window). I've upgraded a few systems from F25 -> F29 already, some of
them upgraded in an hour, one system took over 4 hours.

Code has lots of services so I expect it will take a long time to
upgrade and verify that everything is working.

During the upgrade window code will be unavailable, and the services
running on code will be unavailable. I will stay on IRC during the
upgrade to make real-time announcements.

Please let me know if this time frame does not work for you.

Thanks,

-derek

You need (to install and) use a font, wich contains the symbol. See

At least you should be able to use something else, see

[GNC] Fwd: no entry point found (windows 7) (Resolved)

Hi, thanks for the reply.  Found this, (
http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/GNC-v3-1-error-td4700501.html)        an
that solved my problem.   As quoted :Looks like the uninstall/install procedure
in gnucash-3.1-2.setup.exe left the old 2.6 version of zlib1.dll in place.

Try uninstalling GnuCash from Control Panel, then deleting C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash from Windows Explorer, and reinstalling GnuCash 3.1.

Did the installer remove the old version of GnuCash when you upgraded? Try
uninstalling and then installing the new version. (Someone with more experience

free Revo Uninstaller.)
Also go to http://www.gnucash.org/ and follow the link on the home page and be

This sounds like it could be a permissions problem, although I'm not
familiar enough with MacOS permissions to know how best to fix it.
Hopefully a MacOS expert will come in. But it really sounds like when you
copied your data file you put it into a directory that your current user
does not have access to write new files.

Can you try this:

Make a new folder from the Finder
Copy your data file to the new Folder
Open GnuCash
File -> Open the data file from the new folder

Does this help?

Re: [GNC] Lost all my transactions on Gnu cash

2019-01-15 Thread Geert Janssens
Hi Georgina,

You may not realize you sent this mail to me in private, while it was expected
to go to the mailing list.

Please remember to always reply to the mailing list instead of individuals.
That way you are much more likely to get a helpful answer.

In order to reply to the mailing list you can use the "Reply to all" or "Reply
to list" buttons or menu items in your e-mail program.

I realize some clients tend to hide these options, but if you look carefully
you will always find some function to do so.

I'm forwarding your message to the mailing list on your behalf so the
community as a whole has a chance to help you.

Regards,

Geert

[GNC] Currency symbol (INR) not showing on Tax Invoice report

2019-01-15 Thread Deva -
Hello,

I am on GnuCash 3.4, Mac OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra).

Please see attached for a sample invoice I generate out of GnuCash based on the
Tax Invoice report (sensitive data has been masked). Today was the first time I
tried to run this report from GnuCash 3.4 and I noticed that the INR currency
symbol is showing up as a missing symbol icon.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I tried turning off the display of currency symbol in the report via
Edit->Report Options, but didn’t see anything to that effect.

Cheers,
Deva

Re: [GNC] Lost all my transactions on Gnu cash

2019-01-15 Thread Geert Janssens
A few other suggestions:

1. Which files did you transfer ? While that sounds obvious, it is not always
so. So this question is to ensure you really did copy your gnucash data file
to the older computer.

2. How have you tried to open your gnucash data file ? It's important to
realize that on MacOS double-clicking on a random gnucash data file doesn't
necessarily mean that file will be opened. GnuCash will always reopen that
previously last opened file (which may be different from the one you double-
clicked on). To fix that you can:
- Start the gnucash application
- Select File->Open
- Navigate to your gnucash data file and open it this way

Will that bring your data back ?

Regards,

Geert
