Re: [GNC] Strange behaviour

2020-11-17 Thread randix
Sounds *exactly* like what I was experiencing several weeks ago, and which
was discussed in another thread. I was also using version 4.2.

Apparently this issue was fixed in a nightly build to 4.2, I downloaded it,
and no longer have the issue at all. Think I downloaded and installed the
one on October 25th fwiw.

The whole copy and paste from the comment part of the from header is something
of a "pain in the ass" for many people. It is *far easier* to click the
"Reply[ to Sender]" vs. "Reply to All" buttons virtually all E-Mail clients
provide. Then the E-Mail client sets up the To: and Cc: headers properly and
without error -- the copy and paste is prone to [human] errors.

Re: [GNC] List Replies

2020-11-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Yeah, perhaps I'm not understanding something, but if the list server is
configured with the list address in the reply-to header, but *does not*
hide the individual's personal address (as described by Greg) how hard
is it for someone to copy and paste that address in a new compose window
in the 'to' field? And to make it even easier, most mail apps have a
feature that if you select *any* e-mail address, you can get a context
menu to send a new message to that address!

So the default behavior would be reply-to-list, and if the *OFF* chance
you *might* want to privately reply, you can still do so. (note, private
replies to this list are discouraged, so why make it the default?!)

That way you don't have to rely on people understanding 'reply-all' or
'reply-list' explicitly, and you can still reply privately *very easily*
if you want to.

Adrien

Those lists are almost impossible to make *private* replies, without being a
near computer-Guru.

Note I manage a list populated by people who are mostly non-techies, which is
a "standard" Mailman list and is set up much like this list and these
non-techies have no problem replying to the list and making private replies as
appropriate. *It Is Not Rocket Science.*

In short, yes, mailman COULD be set up to set the Reply-To the list. The
downside of that approach is that it makes it MUCH MUCH harder (nearly
impossible) to make an off-list (private) reply. The decision, which has
been made over and over again over the past 20 years, is that making it
POSSIBLE to make a private reply is more important than making it always
reply-to-list.

This is why every message has a note to remind people to Reply-All.

No need to dig much; there's an outstanding bug

Seems that the comma separator is the culprit here if it is left in when
committing the altered amount. In addition I find that if I use the
backspace key to try to alter a number before committing, GnuCash shuts
down immediately, however using the backspace to delete the comma separator
works fine.

None of the above is particularly relevant to a discussion about how a
(fairly) technical E-Mail list is configured surely. If someone uses
software and wants support then they use the means provided for
support and, in the main, that means E-Mail lists. Most support
E-Mail lists use similar netiquette too:-

Don't top post (i.e. reply below questions)

Don't use HTML

Trim replies to provide context but no more

This list isn't so techie that the above things are strictly enforced
but I still think they're a good idea.

As regards the original question about how the list works with 'Reply'
and 'Reply All' I don't have a strong opinion because my mail program
has a third reply type called 'List Reply' which sorts things out for
me however a mailing list is configured.

2020-11-17 Thread Mahon Finbar
Thanks all, strange indeed. I don't recall it happening before. The
salary amount varies by 1€centime each month, pity it is not more:-(
so I need to change the last digit each month. Maybe I used the 'comma'
procedure previously? Actually the crash happened before I tried to
commit, it happened when I tried to backspace.

Roll on next build, and while I am here, enormous thanks to all the
development team.

Tony -- just curious -- this seems very similar to the thousand separator
issue of entries over $1,000 when you include the thousands separator
(comma). If you enter an entry that includes the comma and go to change
the
entry, it seems GNUCASH crashes -- but not entering the comma the issue
does
not happen. Would be interested if your behavior is happening on items
that
are less than $1,000 (i.e., or do not include the separator).

There is a reported issue with the separator issue that I think is already
addressed for the next build.

Yes, same problem here on Windows 10 Home with Gnucash 4.2.
I used to just copy and paste a previous entry, alter the amount as
required, and then commit. However this now causes CNC to completely shut
down, but I find if I commit the wrong amount and then alter it, things are
fine.

Sorry, I think I posted this already in the wrong address.

Hi,

Just now I was making an entry in an account I use regularly, one of
my

bank accounts. and was entering a salary cheque which required an
alteration of one figure.

It worked fine, date, description, etc., until I tried to change the

digit on the figure. It put the cursor behind the digit but when I
tried to change it the blue circle appeared and gnucash closed,

completely.

I relaunched, having to do 'open anyway' at the lock question, and

opened the account, which was closed. The entry I was trying to make
was not there, although the previous entry was. I tried to enter the
salary entry, tried to change the digit and the same thing happened ,
blue circle, closed.

Any ideas?

It's probably https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797959.

Re: [GNC] Odd Description Behaviour When Updating Description that ends with ")"

2020-11-17 Thread Jim DeLaHunt

David:

This sounds to me like a known GnuCash bug,
, "odd cursor behaviour
in register Description". Apparently, it is fixed in the nightly builds,
but I haven't checked that myself yet. The next release of GnuCash
should have the fix.

I've just recently noticed an unusual behaviour with the Description - if
you have an existing description that ends with a right round bracket e.g.
(From dd/mm/ccyy to dd/mm/2020) and you attempt to update the To Date to
2021 by simply highlighting the last 2 characters of 2020 and overtyping,
leaving the ")" character un-highlighted as soon as 1 character is entered
a ")" is also added automatically so you end up with "202)0" instead of the
expected "2020)"

Running Gnucash 4.2 on MacOS Big Sur.

Not sure if this occurs on Linux/Win 10 but will check further and if it's
NOT an existing bug will raise a bug report for it.
