[GNC] Blank entry in my check register -- can't be removed

2021-05-03 Thread randix
I'm using Windows 10 Pro, GnuCash Version: 4.5
Build ID: 4.5+(2021-03-27)
Finance::Quote: 1.49

This issue is a new one, I've never experienced in all the years of using
GnuCash.

In my check register for one of my accounts, I just noticed a blank
transaction (has a May 2nd date and all other fields are empty). If I try
and delete it, *nothing happens*. I exited out of GnuCash and then
re-started, but it's still there. It's almost like it's "locked" but that
feature doesn't exist (does it?) in GnuCash. This blank line appears
amongst other transactions, both before and after, eg it's not the
"standard" blank line for new entries (that remains unchanged) that appears
on the current date.

It's not impacting the balance, etc., so I guess it's "harmless" but...

Any ideas of what's goin' on?

Re: [GNC] Copying reports from one machine to another

2021-02-22 Thread randix
I use dropbox as the location for my main GnuCash data file, accessible by
each of my laptops.

Since I don't update or create custom reports very often. on each of my
laptops I have 2 batch files that are easily accessible. If I'm working on
Laptop A and update or create a customized report, I use one batch file
which automatically transfers the report file(s) from its dedicated
location, to dropbox. Then on my other laptops I use another batch file
which automatically transfers the report file(s) from that laptop's dropbox
location, and copies them to the "correct" location on that laptop where
GnuCash reports are stored.

Might be an easier way, like using a sync program, but honestly, I update or
create customized reports so infrequently, the two versions of my batch
files in conjunction with dropbox work for me.

As someone else noted, it sure would be nicer if all of the reports, etc.,
were stored in the same location as the main GnuCash data file.

[GNC] New scheduled transaction--error message--I'm stumped

2021-01-29 Thread randix
So I'm running Windows 10 Pro, GnuCash Version: 4.4
Build ID: 4.4+(2020-12-28).

I've used the scheduled transaction feature for years, however, have not
added a NEW scheduled transaction for well over a year (I have edited the
existing ones, not infrequently).

Anyway, whenever I go to ADD a new scheduled transaction, on the template
page, I get the error message, "Scheduled transactions without a template
transaction cannot be automatically created". As you will see from the
attached screenshot, I DO have a template transaction completed. The error
message appears when I go to save it by hitting "OK". I actually took piks
of another scheduled transaction and duplicated my entries several times
(using the same lines) with the information for this new one, and each time
I get that error message.

Any idea WHY I'm getting that error message when I have in fact filled out a
template transaction, consistent with my other entries?

Thanks... Capture.PNG

Re: [GNC] GNU Cash on a Central Computer

2020-12-05 Thread randix
Nelson... although I have GnuCash installed on 2 separate laptops, I only
actively use GnuCash on one laptop (with the data regularly backed up on an
external drive). The other laptop installation is just in case my primary
laptop crashes (and I could then copy one of the backed up data files for
it).

I have no need to regularly access the GnuCash data file from 2 different
sources, however, just out of curiosity as I've seen the dropbox usage
referenced not infrequently here... When I save my GnuCash it does not
write the same file name each time, eg

2020-12-Dec.gnucash.20201205100356.gnucash
2020-12-Dec.gnucash.20201205073851.gnucash
etc.

So, for example.
1. I save GnuCash data on Laptop 1. The save goes to my dropbox directory.
2. On Laptop 2, I open up the saved GnuCash data file from the dropbox
directory.
3. All is good.
4. Then on Laptop 1 I open up GnuCash, and it defaults to the last saved
file. I work on it. Then save it.
5. All is good
6. But when I later open up GnuCash on Laptop 2, it's going to automatically
load the last saved file which will not be the latest file which has a
different name.
7. So are you saying when you use dropbox in conjunction with GnuCash, the
user has to go to the dropbox directory, and manually load the last saved
file after looking at the saved dates, to make sure it's not loading an
older saved file?

Hope that's clear. Thanks. As I say, just curious.

Sounds *exactly* like what I was experiencing several weeks ago, and which

Apparently this issue was fixed in a nightly build to 4.2, I downloaded it,
and no longer have the issue at all. Think I downloaded and installed the
one on October 25th fwiw.

Re: [GNC] Price retrieval

2020-11-12 Thread randix
Geert... just to put a cap on this thread (it has a good ending)...

1. The Dell XPS 13 that was involved is not a 2-1 version (which Dell does
offer), it has a standard Windows 10 Professional install with no optional
tablet version as far as I'm aware. I have no idea why the Start menu does
not reflect a "group" for GnuCash, only the exe file, etc.

2. I had previously tried to run "C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\install-fq-mods.cmd" but it stopped at
"c:/strawb~/\c\bin\gmake.exe -- ok." and it stopped there for such a "long
time" that I assumed it got stuck there for whatever reason. I did try
running it again this morning and it again stopped at that point, but this
time I just went and took the proverbial "walk around the block", and it
finally did resume and the install was successful.

/So I have no explanation why the option does not appear in the Start menu,
nor when you type it in the search window on the task bar, but running the
CMD file in the bin folder did work, I just wasn't being patient enough
(something I seem to recall I've been told once or twice in my life on other
endeavors)./

In any event, thanks for your response.

Re: [GNC] Price retrieval

2020-11-12 Thread randix
I sincerely appreciate your response, however, as reflected in the attached
piks:

1. I do NOT have a GnuCash group in the Start menu, only the exe file
appears, as reflected in the attached screenshot, so I can't access the
"Install Online Price Retrieval" from there;

2. If I do a search for "Install Online Price Retrieval for Gnucash" off the
search option on the taskbar, it only brings up hits on the web, nothing to
run on my own laptop, as reflected in the attached screenshot.

So color me confused. I'm running Windows 10 Professional, on a brand new
Dell XPS 13 laptop.

I should also mention that on my other laptop, also a Dell XPS 13, also
which is running Windows 10 Pro, which I also have Gnucash installed running
4.2 and which I've been using without a problem for the past couple of
years, the price module works fine... however, as in the case of the brand
new laptop described above, on this laptop GnuCash ALSO has NO folder in the
start menu, and if you do a search for the retrieval off the taskbar, it
also only brings up hits on the web. I have no recollection how I
successfully installed it on this laptop, but I must have done something
right, cause it runs perfectly.

Re: [GNC] Price retrieval

2020-11-11 Thread randix
Ok, so after my last post, I figured I better read the user manual as it's
been a long time since I've installed GnuCash.  Appears to me that I need to
"install" the Finance::Quote module.  However, despite the documentation, I
cannot find the "Gnucash Start Group"-- all it includes is the exe file (I'm
running Windows 10 Pro)... in the start group Gnucash exe simply appears
under the Financial folder.

I did try and run gnc-fq-check via the bin folder and it confirmed I need to
install Finance::Quote.  When I run gnc-fq-update from the bin folder it
stops at c:\strawb~/\c\bin\gmake.exe -- ok.

So I throw myself at your mercy, do I need new glasses or where do i look to
install Finance::Quote.

[GNC] Price retrieval

I'm using GnuCash 4.2 on Windows 10 Pro.

On a separate laptop, I installed GnuCash, and copied over from my regular
laptop where I normally use GnuCash, the files that I thought contained the
customization needed for the new install.

Everything works great, except for one component, price retrieval. The
"remove", "edit" and "get quotes" buttons are greyed out. I did enter the
API key, and strawberry perl is installed.

Any thoughts? Screenshot below.

Re: [GNC] 4.2 on Windows 10 keeps randomly crashing

2020-10-25 Thread randix
I'm running GnuCash 4.2 (Build ID: 4.2+(2020-09-26)) on Windows Pro 10, Dell
XPS 13, and have also experienced repeated crashes which do not involve
thousands separators. As in the case of the other poster, it has only
occurred after upgrading to 4.2.

Most of the following may be irrelevant, but this is when I encounter it:

1. I always enter my 4 or 5 weekly payroll transactions ahead for the coming
month, that include the net amount to be paid to me, and then in the split
the gross with all of the usual tax deductions.

2. On Friday when my employer's check posts to my account, occasionally it
will differ by a few cents from what I had originally entered. After I
figure out what tax deduction accounts for the variance, I open up the
transaction in GnuCash and edit the line in the split, eg from $548.44 to
$548.46 or whatever. /When I move to the next line in the split (eg out of
the line I edited), GnuCash crashes. / I can do the same thing over and over
on that transaction, and it always crashes.

3. I finally figured out (after being beat over the head enuf times), that
if I change the line in question that needs to be edited and then hit SAVE
in GnuCash, eg *without moving off the line*, I can then go ahead and edit
any other lines in that transaction and all is good.

The above situation is the only instance where I've experienced a crash,
albeit it has occurred numerous times.

fyi and fwiw

Can't believe I'm re-visiting this again, lol. Goes to show what happens
when you find extra time for a change (I haven't experienced this phenomenon
for many years) (triple sigh). I'm currently running Windows 10, GnuCash
Version: 3.8, Build ID: 3.8b+(2019-12-29), Finance::Quote: 1.49.  Everything
works fine except aqbanking and yes, I do understand that the latest version
is not compatible with Gnucash 3, etc. I get that... *I'm taking from your
prior posts that one can get aqbanking to work w GnuCash 3.8 if one installs
an older version of Aqbanking.* From your last post, I believe you indicate
that's either 5.82 or 5.78.

Ok, so per your earlier post, I was pulling what's left of my hair searching
hopelessly for Aqbanking 5.20, and then just noticed by accident that you
had made a further reply to the thread, correcting your prior post,
indicating that I should (???) be looking for either Aqbanking 5.8.2 or
5.7.8, not 5.20. So:

1. First I did a search on my laptop, and found references to prior versions
of Aqbanking, including 5.7 and 5.8 (see the attachment to this message
post). Am I correct that my recent install of 3.8 does not include the
necessary aqbanking files to install prior versions of it? If I'm wrong,
how do I install those older versions from what's on my laptop; and if I'm
right, then I assume I need to download one of the older versions (see #2,
below).

2. Ok, so then I did a google search, and found a reference to aqbanking
5.8.2-1 at the following link:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/aqbanking/
<https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/aqbanking/> . From
the mirror site referenced at that site, it looks like I'd be downloading:
*aqbanking-5.8.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar*. I assume once I extract the files I'll
find an install file to install the older version of aqbanking, and
thereafter the clouds will part, the birds will chirp, and I can stop
manually updating my accounts. For now, I'll sit on my hands.

When you have a free moment, if you could tell me if I'm on the right path
or not, would be great, but in any event, enjoy the rest of your Sunday!!!
/(and thanks for all the help you've provided before in this forum, over the
years on so many subjects relating to GnuCash)/.

aqbanking... it crashes when I try and retrieve my accounts, and then when i
try and delete the aqbanking user i had set up, i get an error that the

Re: [GNC] Suggestion to ease newbies import problems

2019-09-26 Thread randix
In all seriousness, I recall that when I tried to import my data from
Quicken, I ran into so many problems and inaccuracies of the transactions
going into the wrong GnuCash account, etc., that I concluded it was just
easier and I'd have more confidence in entering the transactions manually
from the accounts that were important to me for X period of time, then have
to spend hours and hours reviewing "imported" entries and trying to chase
down inaccuracies. It took me some time, obviously, but in retrospect, I
have no regrets over that approach, and the beer made it somewhat
enjoyable...

[GNC] Aqbanking install question/problem

2019-09-22 Thread randix
Returning to a Windows environment after giving up on my Pixel Chromebook and
GnuCash being sweetie pies (apparently, they are only distant friends).

Anyway, I'm running Windows 10 on my new Dell XPS 13 laptop, and using
GnuCash Version: 3.7
Build ID: 3.7+(2019-09-07).

My current issue is with setting up AQBanking... I'm setting up my accounts,
but whenever I get to the point where it is retrieving the associated
accounts as part of the setup, GnuCash totally closes down. I've tried it
multiple times and it shuts down when I get to that very step. Any ideas?

[GNC] pixel chromebook re-visited

2019-09-15 Thread randix
Chromebook pixel, re-visited.

a year or more ago, i got a pixel chromebook, and with the help of the great
folks here, got 3.2 installed on linux on the chromebook. didn't work 100%,
but thrilled that i could access my accounts.

3.6 came out, and i managed to install that, although my ability to modify
the preferences did not work at all, neither did the ability to modify the
scheduled transactions, etc. but the essence of it worked.

just saw that 3.7 came out, and someone posted the deb files for it. so
took a wild shot and wiped my chromebook to its original state. i have 3.7
running on it but it still doesn't allow me to modify any preferences, and a
host of other stuff doesn't work. i can access particular accounts, it
seems.

i'm about to toss the chromebook and go back to windows.

fyi and fwiw

Geert:

1. With regard to Gnucash not only filling the screen, but going off the
screen, etc., etc., I did solve that problem by making adjustments in the
display settings of the chromebook. Looks great, what a vacation for my
eyes after squinting at GnuCash all these years.

2. With regard to the other issue, that last line you shared...

flatpak run --env=DCONF_USER_CONFIG_DIR=.config/dconf run
org.gnucash.GnuCash

The other lines ran fine, but on the above one I get, "Names must contain at
least 2 periods"

Can you advise?

3. Hopefully #2 above makes the preference screen responsive, but are you
saying that installing a css file in the appropriate Linux directory can't
substitute for the non-working Preference page?

[GNC] GnuCash -- Flatpak -- Update assistance needed

2019-08-16 Thread randix
So I need any assistance, suggestions.

I have a Google Pixel Chromebook, and 1-2 years ago I successfully installed
GnuCash Version 3.2 on it, via Flatpak, that has worked fine 90%. I have a
zillion backups of my data.

Earlier today I saw an email that Geert sent out, indicating (I think) that
3.3 is available on Flatpak. So I went to terminal mode and typed "flatpak
update" which I understood would update all installed applications and
runtimes to the latest version. After I ran that, I got a number of errors,
see the below screenshot.

Screenshot_2019-08-16_at_6.png

I tried running GnuCash after the update and despite the errors, the program
loads and populates on my screen, but I'm unable to click on any part of the
program's screen, eg it does nothing, no matter what I click.

Suggestions? Much thanks.

[GNC] Downloaded transactions screen

2018-11-07 Thread randix
I'm using a 2018 Google Pixel Chromebook, running GnuCash Version: 3.2
Build ID: 3.2+ (2018-06-24) under Linux.

Not really expecting anyone to have ideas, but will toss this out there.

Not consistently, but periodically when I do an online download of
transactions, and that box comes up that gives you the opportunity to mark
whether it's a new transaction, a current one, etc. (the one before going on
to the reconcile screen), I'm *unable to check any of the boxes, literally*.
Whenever this happens, I notice ALL of the transactions listed appear in red
(eg new, although they aren't, which is why I need to check the appropriate
box). Of course I can manually reconcile when this happens and do, but just
wondered if anyone had ideas why this happens from time to time...

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-28 Thread randix
An update and recap...

I purchased a Google Pixel Chromebook ($999).

I activated the Linux option on the Chromebook by following this link (it
specifically used the Google Pixel Chromebook as their example):

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-install-linux-apps-your-chromebook

The activation was simple and without any issues. If one has a chromebook
other than the one mentioned above and in the article, I make zero promises
re your success…[that’s a disclaimer].

Prior to purchasing the Chromebook, I was using a Dell XPS 13 with GnuCash
3.3 installed, Windows 10. Although I could get an older version of GnuCash
linux installed, it did not look good, and more importantly, my 3.3 GnuCash
files were not compatible with the older version. I was desperate (my XPS
laptop had just been stolen, and I had opted to go for the Chromebook
because of the linux support which I assumed would work with GnuCash).

I started a thread on the GnuCash user site… admittedly in desperation.
Although I had extensive backups of my GnuCash data and supplementary files,
that did me little good if I could not get the program installed.

http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/GNC-Chromebooks-td4704359.html

If you read the thread (hundreds of posts), you will see I got all of kinds
of assistance and suggestions, in addition to private replies that many
users were kind enough to send me.

Btw, using the product “Crossover” which allows Window programs to run on
Linux, did not work for me, eg for GnuCash.

To cut to the chase, after many dead ends, it was suggested to me to try
flathub…

https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.gnucash.GnuCash

I first entered at the terminal prompt:

sudo apt-get install flatpak

then I entered...

sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

I restarted the Chromebook

Per the instructions on the flathub site, to install GnuCash, I entered at
the terminal prompt:

flatpak install flathub org.gnucash.GnuCash

but that did not work. Colin Law, a member on the GnuCash user site, who is
now on my Christmas list, suggested that I needed to add “sudo”, without the
quotes, prior to the above line. I did and it worked perfectly.

It installed:
Version: 3.2
Build ID: 3.2+ (2018-06-24)
Finance::Quote: -

I’ve been using it now for several weeks, and I am so grateful I have it up
and running. I have encountered a few issues which I’ve not yet had time to
investigate, but I’m so grateful to have the basic program up and running,
it’s the least of my concerns. Those issues include occasional issues when
I go and reconcile after running aqbanking, retrieving prices, and not
having time to figure out where to place the file to customize the colors.
But all in all, I’m very pleased and so, so relieved.

I do understand that in the next Chrome OS release or 2, they will be adding
more support to the linux system, to make it even easier to work with, so I
look forward to that.

Again, much thanks to everyone who helped me out. Seems like only yesterday
when I bought 4 6-packs of Stella, and spent days manually transferring over
all of my transactions from Quicken… ah, to be young again :)

Hope the above summary is of some use.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Not willing to give up, so two (2) more questions...

1. So my data files are from 3.3, I can't use them in the version I was
finally able to install (2.6.15--says I need 2.6.19 or higher). Question:
If I find another computer to install the current version of gnucash on, and
*export*the data from my data files, would I be able to *import* that export
file into 2.6.15? eg, is that a backdoor to get my data into an older
version that is not otherwise backward compatible?

2. I'm currently in DC (at Dulles, actually), on my way back to Vegas. Won't
know for an hour or 2, but may then be headed tonight to San Francisco to do
a new month project. Is there anyone around Vegas or San Francisco who
might be interested in building (or whatever you do, beyond my expertise) a
current version of GnuCash that I can use on my Google Pixel Chromebook
using Linux? If so, shoot me an email, butterands...@gmail.com, give me an
estimate or ask me whatever you need to ask me to come up with how much
you'd do it for, etc.

Thanks!

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Colin... I'm so desperate to get gnucash back, I'll take the 1950
version!

When I go to gnucash.org and click on the distributable option, all I get
are options for windows and mac. For Linux it says, what I am printing
below. Obviously I did not get a "linux distribution" I simply turned it on
in chromebooks. When I go to look at older versions, I don't see a linux
install option. Not only do I not have a desire to build it from scratch, I
wouldn't know where to start.

Is there no place I can download a file apparently with a "deb" extension
for a linux install? I don't care what version it is. Or am I
missing something (again)???

Linux
Most linux distributions come bundled with a version of GnuCash, though it's
not always the most recent version and it may not have been installed by
default. Still it is recommended to use the GnuCash version that comes with
your distribution.

Below are ways to install GnuCash on some of the more popular distributions:

Fedora: Fedora users can install GnuCash through
System->Administration->Add/Remove Software (Gnome) or
Applications->System->Software Management (KDE).
Mandriva: Mandriva users can install GnuCash through the Software Management
in the Mandriva Linux Control Center.
Redhat/Centos: Redhat and CentOS don't have GnuCash in their repositories by
default. It can be installed however from the third-party Epel repository.
For more details on configuring this additional software repository for your
setup, see Epel's wiki page.
Solus: Solus users can install GnuCash through the Software Center (Office
Software -> Financial Software -> gnucash).
Ubuntu: Ubuntu users can install GnuCash through the Software Center. This
will install GnuCash under the Office category in the Applications menu.
If your distro doesn't ship with GnuCash or you wish to install a different
version than it ships with, you could try to build GnuCash directly from the
source code. The GnuCash wiki has guidelines for several distributions.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Ok, I think I'm getting closer... after some more research and exploring...

1. I have the latest Google Pixel Chromebook which does support the Linux
option

2. With the help of the following recent article (different from what I
posted earlier), it was quite simple to turn the Linux option ON.

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-install-linux-apps-your-chromebook

3. If you refer to the article, I've now reached the point where it says
"Download and Install an application"

*4. I went to www.gnucash.org and under "Download GnuCash 3.3" it lists
Linux and gives 2 options from which to download, "Source" and "via
distribution". I chose "source" and it downloaded, gnucash-docs-3.3.tar.gz.

4a. [QUESTION] Is that the right file for me to download?

4b. [QUESTION] The final instructions from the article in #5 below are very
clear, but how do I extract/decompress the downloaded file in "4a." above on
my Chromebook, and will it create one file with a "deb" extension?*

5. These are the article instructions for the remaining steps:

/Once the installation file is downloaded, open the File browser.
Click Downloads.
Copy and paste the .deb installation file to the Linux files folder.

Click Linux files
Right click or two finger tap on the trackpad while your pointer hovers over
the file name.
Click Install with Linux (Beta).
The program will install, and when it's done, you can open it from the app
drawer. That's it!/

Thanks for your assistance, again...

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-06 Thread randix
Not quite understanding why Google Play is entering the thread. Correct me if
I'm wrong (won't be the first time), but there is NO "app" for the "real"
GnuCash. There is an app that has been causing enormous confusion for ages
called GnuCash, but it's NOT GnuCash. The folks behind the app, are not the
same folks behind the "true" GnuCash that is full featured and which I've
enjoyed for years since fleeing Quicken. Feel feel to correct me if I'm
wrong, but that's always my understanding.

I know for a fact that the GnuCash APP works on chromebook, cause it was the
first thing I tried to install. But knowing that it's not really "GnuCash",
and not having a clue since I no longer have access to the "real" GnuCash
how I would export my chart of accounts to it, and not having any clue how
to get all the years of data into that app, I'm gun shy.

Color me clueless, which I freely plead guilty to...

I'm in awe of what all you folks are doing and sharing, but there's some of
us who just don't have the time, interest or ability to even begin to go
that route, no matter how successful the end game is...

Miss having a simple way to make basic changes and customizing the
appearance of GnuCash (I'm a Windows user).

I don't discount for a second the ability of developers on this site, nor
question the fact they establish their own priorities and interests, cause
gawd knows I don't pay them a dime, and I suspect that personal
customization is not high on their priority lists...

Re: [GNC] Advice needed, how to handle a medical reimbursement account...

2018-05-15 Thread randix
GnuCash - User mailing list wrote
> Hi Randix,

> OK, I misunderstood the $1000.00. Here is how I would do it.

Just wanted to do a quick reply that after spending many hours last night, I
basically followed what you laid out and have it working perfectly for my
needs, although I'm sure "pure accountants" will take exception. It lets me
keep track of my various MRA accounts, and see the current balance in each
which is important to me; it also lets me keep track of total MRA deposits
received and MRA payments made, and makes sure that any MRA paid amounts are
credited on the various health related expense accounts. Below is what I
did, which pretty much follows your suggestions. Thanks again for your time
and patience (and everyone else as well) in helping me out on this one...

-

I set up the following accounts:

ASSET:MRA_abc
ASSET:MRA_def
ASSET:MRA_ghi

Multiple accounts, one for each company that has funded a medical
reimbursement account for me, allows me to keep track of the current
available balance in each separate account

EXPENSE:Health:*MRA_Payments

Keeps track of total MRA payments from all MRA accounts for claims
submitted/processed

EXPENSE:Health:Insurance

Just one of my standard health expense accounts

INCOME:*MRA_Deposits

Keeps track of total MRA deposits made by the various companies in the
various MRA accounts

--

So assume abc company notifies me they have deposited $1000 in my MRA_abc
account on 5/1/18. Assume thereafter on 5/5/18 I pay $100 health insurance
premium from my checking, on 5/10/18 I file a claim for reimbursement from
the MRA_abc account for the $100 premium payment, and on 5/15/18 I receive a
direct deposit in my checking account for the claim.

1-May:
Income:*MRA_Deposits -$1000
Asset:MRA_abc +$1000

Balances: MRA_abc $1,000, *MRA_Deposits $1000

5-May
Asset:Checking -$100
Expense:Health:Insurance +$100

Balances: Checking account balance, Expense:Health:Insurance $100

10-May: submit claim
Asset:MRA_abc -$100
Expense:Health:*MRA_Payments +$100

Balances: MRA_abc $900, Expense:Health:*MRA_Payments $100

15-May: receive reimbursement
Expense:Health:Insurance -$100
Asset:Checking +$100

Balances: Checking account balance, Expense:Health:Insurance $0, MRA_abc
balance $900

Re: [GNC] Advice needed, how to handle a medical reimbursement account...

2018-05-13 Thread randix
Thanks for your suggestion.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, what you propose would work fine if one was not
interested in keeping track of the current balance(s) in the various MRA
accounts. I need to keep track of the balances, as I need to know which MRA
account still has credit balances to which I can submit claims.

So, for example, using your suggestion...

1. On January 1, 2018, I'm notified that I have received $1,000 which has
been deposited in my XYZ MRA Account (keep in mind, these are not funds that
have been actually sent to me, rather they have been deposited in an account
set up in my name). I have an ASSET account in the name of XYZ MRA, so on
January 1, 2018, when notified of the deposit, I make a "deposit" in that
asset account in the amount of $1,000, and offset it with $1,000 in an
income account titled MRA income (so I can keep track of MRA funds that have
been credited to me in all MRA accounts).

2. On January 5, 2018, I pay out of my checking account the sum of $100.00
to Doctor 123, the offsetting entry is expense:health:medical

3. Using your suggestion, on January 10, 2018 when I file a claim for
reimbursement of the $100.00, I debit the ASSET XYZ MRA account, so it now
has a balance of $900.00, and credit the $100.00 in my
expense:health:medical account. All good.

4. *The issue is what happens when I actually receive the reimbursement in
my checking account. *

4.1 You said, "Receive reimbursement. Deposit into checking account. Debit
checking, credit MRA". Not exactly clear what you meant, except that I get
you want a credit to end up in the MRA account. But doing so, will bring
the balance of the MRA account back up to $1,000 when we know there's only
$900 in there...if that account had a zero balance to start with, your
debit/credit approach would work fine. But I need to have it track the
balances.

Suggestion? My head is starting to spin :)

[GNC] Advice needed, how to handle a medical reimbursement account...

2018-05-13 Thread randix
I've been stumbling around with a particular issue for several years, and
figure I need to finally clean up how I enter the amounts in question, once
and for all... honestly, I'm stumped...

I do contract work all over the country. When I do contract work in lovely
(sarcasm) San Francisco, they have enacted a city ordinance that mandates
that in certain situations, employers in the City of San Francisco, are
required to set up a medical reimbursement account ("MRA") for employees--I
qualify. On a quarterly basis, I get notified that an employer has deposited
X amount in my medical reimbursement account. I can then submit my health
related expenses, and get reimbursed.

So here's what I've done in the past, and I realize there must be a better
way that is more clean...

1. I created an ASSET account for the MRA. Actually I created several ASSET
accounts because each employer I do contract work for in San Francisco,
creates a separate MRA account for me. Those accounts reflect my pending
credit balances in each MRA account. If I didn't do that, my head would be
spinning to keep track of how much I have available in each MRA account (and
which one I should submit a claim to...)

2. I obviously have standard EXPENSE accounts set up for healthcare, broken
down by insurance, medical, dental, optical, etc.

So let's say that on April 1 I paid $100 to Doctor X. I have a debit off
one of my checking accounts to pay that amount, and my expense account for
medical reflects the $100. I then submit a claim reimbursement for the $100
from an MRA account. When the claim is approved, they deposit the $100 in
my checking account, obviously that shows up as a credit/deposit. The
offsetting entry is for the MRA account where the payment came from, so my
ASSET account for that MRA reflects the new balance remaining.

BUT... obviously I still have the $100 payment reflected in my expense
account for medical. How do I get a credit into that account so it
accurately reflects the amount of my medical expenses for which I have not
been reimbursed? I know this makes zero sense, but in a fantasy world I
would like to have credits be made simultaneously in both the ASSET MRA
account as well as the EXPENSE medical account.

Hope that makes sense... GnuCash suggestions to get me out of this
accounting jungle?

Re: [GNC] Handling VISA Debit Accounts

2018-05-07 Thread randix
Did VISA debit cards do somethin' to you as a child, why are you pickin' on
them (that reply is to no one in particular, only the thread, so pleeze, no
one get defensive)?

A debit card [to me] is a non-existent entity, it has no business having its
own "account".

My schwab checking account has a VISA debit card (yippee, so
impressive...)... if i use it to buy a hamburger at Steve's Burgers, I enter
it in the schwab checking account as "Steve's Burgers", I think that
deserves a "duh"...

If I use the debit card for ATM withdrawals, I call it ATM-23, ATM-42.50,
ATM-43, ATM-203, etc., regardless what ATM machine I decide to hug. My
gnucash entry automatically enters the atm charge into an expense account
for atm charges, and pushes the remaining bucks into my cash account (which
IS deserving of it's own account). After years of doing this, I have every
combination covered. So ATM-23 means $3 bank charge and $20 debited from my
checking and pushed into my "cash" account.

Course Schwab reimburses me for all ATM charges at the end of each month, so
that acts as a credit to my expense account for bank atm charges...

Works great. As much as I luv my debit card, sorry, debit card, you don't
deserve your own place... :) Now if you had brunette hair, about 5' 7"
and we'd talk.

Understanding that everyone wants the latest and greatest (yesterday, if not
today), the fact is, clearly, there are issues, whatever they are, with
installing, running version 3.0 on Windows 10. I may be deaf and blind, but
not hearing/seeing any Window 10 users who are running 3.0 without an
issue...assuming they can get it to run.

As painful as it is, I have opted, and would suggest others who desire to
run GnuCash under Windows 10, to just do it using version 2.6.21 and wait a
few months until "whoever" works out "whatever" that is clearly causing the
problem with 3.0 in Windows 10.
