David You can download V% from Github (https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/tree/5.0) until it comes up on Sourceforge or the GnuCash website. Select version 5 in the tags (top left) if it doesn't load with v% selected and when it has loaded select the Download ZIP option in the dropdown menu of the green code button (top right). Re: [GNC] Should I upgrade or update?
I heartily recommend the 5.0 update. I am, I confess, a low demand user as I use it as a checkbook for non-business use and manage my investments elsewhere. I normally wait a little longer to update out of an abundance of caution but decided to go for it now. The drop down list for entering transactions makes the update worth it all by itself. The update has been totally glitch free so far. Thanks so much to all involved! Re: [GNC] Should I upgrade or update?
I would recommend v5.0 as it's now stable. I've been running the betas and now 5.0 on my Windows 10 machine. If by chance you do encounter a bug, it would help the team by reporting it and you can easily just install 4.14 if needed. The million dollar question: Should I upgrade to GNC 5.0 or update to 4.14? I am predominately on Windows 11 platform but I am NOT a business user. Keeping books for organizations I was always exporting and editing. Keep in mind that the SAME (logical) report would be wanted in different levels of detail for different purposes. Almost always one format/level of detail/grouping for the Board of Directors and another for tax purposes. For example, the BoD might want to see just the total cost of an event. But the treasurer needs "printing and postage" separated out form other costs because a 990/990EZ line item. The BoD might just want to see the total cost to the organizations of all interns but the treasurer needs to see each separately and those each split between "pay" and "mileage reimbursement" (to fill out possible 1099-MISC) and similarly maybe the total of "orchard mowing costs" for the BoD but how much to any neighboring farmers paid again to see if a 1099 needed. Besides, having it outside of gnucash and under the control of and editor makes it easy to add annotations to explain anything unusual. Since I haven't yet figured out how to do six things at once and anyway have to manipulate several git repositories in the right order, it's taking time and some things like flathub are getting pushed ahead of the announcements. Tommy Trussell reported a similar strange update prompt on Ubuntu 22.04 a couple of weeks ago with a very tardy prompt to update to 4.13, which he already had. Thanks, Christopher. I wonder if you or anyone else has experience with the 'use accumulated amounts' feature in the conventional budget report. I use the YTD budget report often and need it. YTD budget will definitely be affected because it's unmaintained and old. The good news is the conventional budget report will have similar functionality called "use accumulated amounts". Re: [GNC] should I upgrade from 2.6.15 for windows
I don’t download any data either, and have had no issues that I needed to upgrade for. I just like keeping with the most current version for bug fixes. You should probably upgrade to 2.6.21 first. That is the last version that can read a 3.x file if you need to go backwards for some reason. Then you can jump to whatever is the current release. (right now, 3.7) Of course, always make a backup of your data file before any upgrade, just in case. [GNC] should I upgrade from 2.6.15 for windows
Hi, I have been running gnuCash 2.6.15 for nearly three years. It has met all my needs once I installed Phil's ytd-budget.scm to get year to date budget reports. I do not have data to enter so I do it manually and do not download data from financial institutions. Should I upgrade to a newer version? If I do will I have a problem with running ytd-budget.scm? If I don't will I have problems upgrading later because there is too much of a gap between versions. Re: [GNC] Should I upgrade?
I believe 3.3 should be safe to use. It still has a few quirks but it will treat your data properly. The most reported issue is with entering information in the account registers. Autocompletion is not always working correctly. Especially if you require an input method (which is common for non-western alphabets). >From the feedback I saw recently the most recent nightly build found here https://code.gnucash.org/builds/win32/maint/ has the best input support. Other known issues can be found in the 3.3 release notes: https://gnucash.org/news.phtml You may decide for yourself if any of these are important enough for you to hold off on the upgrade. Re: [GNC] Should I upgrade?
I was running 2.6 on Win 10 and had a totally flawless upgrade to 3.2 and now 3.3. I think the install process deletes the old version as part of the upgrade. Do I need to uninstall or will the ver. 3 install take care of all of that?
