Sardesai has incidentally just been declared as Goa Today magazine's 'Man of The Year'.] What I believe that Goan identity is a complex identity. There are various reasons for this. One is that Goa is extremely small state. It's a state with a very large minority population and a state with long experience in colonial rule. Since Goa is small and distant from the national capital Delhi, its relative geographical isolation means that there is lot of ignorance about Goa. There is general stereotype fad about Goa, particularly for the tourists. Goa has been converted into a postcard image of fish, fenny and football. It's almost as if Goan identity is expected to cater more to the tourists than to itself. This does not mean that Goa should not be vibrant tourist destination. Goa should make every effort to attract outsiders, whether film festival or hotel industry. But Goan identity cannot be a prisoner of tourists alone. It's a multi-religious society. Goan society faces challenges in shaping its identity for the future. In fact right from the time Goa was liberated in 1961, it has faced various challenges to its identities. In 60's and 70's it was about merger; 80's whether Konkani should be language or not and last 12 years growing challenge of Hindutva and how that will be reconciled with the Goan identity. Of course, from time to time there has been a questioning on Portuguese rule and whether it is beneficial or detrimental. Part of the problem is stereotyping because if you ask anyone from outside Goa, they have limited knowledge of Goan Hindu community. Many outsiders still see Goa as predominantly Catholic state and when I conducted survey in my office I found that seven out of 10 believed that Catholics were in majority in Goa. Let us be honest that there are two distinct communities -- Goan Catholics and Hindus. They have lived for centuries through a process of what I would call civilized segregation in the sense that there has been no open hostility between the communities but there has been limited interaction at a personal level. There have been attempts over the years to exploit these divisions. Particularly by the post-independence politicians of Goa. It is this kind of divisive politics, which is one of the biggest challenges before Goans today. It's not that the people of Goa have failed the state, its politicians who are failing the people of Goa. The most dangerous thing that can happen in Goa is a politician to pray on the insecurities of either minority or majority communities; neither Hinduism nor Catholicism is threatened in Goa. Goa's village societies are strong enough to resist any external attempt to divide the people. I believe that the younger generations of Goans do not want to be caught in past prejudice and communal differences. They want a modern progressive identity for Goans. And identity is based essentially on economic progress, where they can live a better life than the previous generation did. The politicians of Goa need to recognize this urge amongst Goans for economic progress. Unfortunately, Goan politicians are trapped in defections politics and aya-D'Souza-gaya-D'souza kind of politics. The last thing a small state like Goa needs is instability and chaos. Unfortunately, many of the wrongs committed by Goa's politicians do not get highlighted in the national media. For instance when hotel was attacked recently by people owing loyalty to Goa politicians, it does not get highlighted in the national media. That is something Goa will have to live with. The national media only seemed interested in Goa at Christmas and New Year and to a large extend is responsible for the negative stereotype of the Goans. This is a problem, which must be addressed by national media sooner or later. The national media needs to define Goan identity as Goans see it, not as some kind of tourist brochure. The politicians also need to see the Goan identity in the context of the 21st century. Whether Portuguese road names should be changed is not the way 21st century identity has

This about Goat milk In goats milk more of the fat globules are smaller than in cows milk so the human digestive enzymes can complete their breakdown much more rapidly. The proteins form a softer curd in the stomach also helping digestion. The vitamin and mineral content in goats milk compares favourable with cows milk. 500 ml provides 60-70% of the recommended daily allowance, RDA, for adults. Goats milk is non-mucous forming and helps to neutralize mucous which can provide dramatic relief to catarrh sufferers. - http://www.tetrapack.com __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - 250MB free storage. [Goanet]Goanet dont need to be part of a mob
Dear Goanetters. Word`s don't count much in a world where plots, lies and corruption is a part of the public life. The action of people will tell the truth. Let me recall some of the facts in the Ribandar case. A priest is accused by a self-style-lawyer of molesting a girl. Pamphlets are distributed in the village, exposing names and insulting a whole community. What does the girls' family do? First: The mother invites the accused Priest to comes home and bless her house. Than she writes to the CM of Goa that the priest is innocent. She even sends her daughter to the Children's Court to tell the same, not even being summoned. Second: The so-called self-style-lawyer cannot be stopped by the will of the family; he continues to spoil his own reputation, the reputation of his own Church, and the reputation of the innocent girl. Third: On the 7th of January 2005, the day the Children`s Court dismissed a private criminal complaint against the priest. What does the girl's family do? The father of the girl is celebrating the dismissal with fireworks. A last and final request to the moderators of Goanet. When a man has lost his own self-respect, what more is there to loose? You don't have to join him by throwing more stones. Sincerely Yours Ivar Fjeld Ribandar __ Do you Yahoo!? All your favorites on one personal page Try My Yahoo! http://my.yahoo.com
[Goanet]Re: Ribandar case the case of the slipping hand
Dr Colaco wrote, 1. Let's see if we can hear directly from this independent investigator Auda Viegas - who also happens to be (according to Advocate Aires Rodrigues) the complainant to the police. Comment: Auda Viegas after interviewing the victim, her mother and the accused priest Fr. Newton Rodrigues filed a written complaint with the police. However the F.I.R registered by the police against the priest was on the basis of the complaint filed by the victim and her mother themselves. 2. From my perspective (and I have NO mercy to offer if the child was molested). I also consider it inappropriate for any priest to PLAY with even a pendant which is on another person's body - unless the person is an adult has consented to the PLAY. Comment: You are right. As late as around 10.30 p.m and that too in the sacred parochial house fiddling with the pendant is totally out of place. 3. However, We have No confessions ( no pun intended ), No cross-examination of the accusers, ONLY trial via Internet by someone who definitely appears to have other issues with this priest. Comment: As already explained I have nothing personal against the accused priest Fr. Newton Rodrigues. What one has to get is to the bottom of the financial and moral irregularities at the Church. The Church has to come out open and cannot keep vital issues under wrap. 4. Let's look at the text of what was apparently ASKED and what was allegedly ANSWERED. I trust that the accused priest was interviewed by this independent investigator Auda Viegas with his (the priest's) lawyer present. Hopefully, the statement was duly recorded (on paper) and signed by all parties concerned. Comment: This Auda Viegas would be able to answer. But if anyone wants a copy of her complaint to the police please let me know. I will try and post a copy of it on goanet for the benefit of all. 5. I'd also like to hear from Auda Viegas IF this 13 year old child's privacy rights were violated by those who plastered the name of her Uncle all over the Internet. Unless of course, this Uncle has several 13 year old nieces . Comment: The uncle has violated no one's privacy. May be the priest's!. It is a coincidence that the uncle has many nieces of the same age. Aires Rodrigues Ribandar jose

[Goanet]G'day from SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Hi folks, Well, I'm back in Sydney, only arrived a couple of days ago, having been in Goa for one month. It was absolutely fantastic to see everyone at Club Vasco. It was great to put faces to names - Vivian (and I can't remember the name of Vivian's friend who was talking to us - from Florida??), Melinda, Cecil, Bosco, Floriano, Joel, Valentino (the book's great), Roland, Silviano, Tony CA, Fred, Eugene (I hope you read the Friday Balcao cover to cover what with the Rs. 70 cost of it - ha ha!! - that was funny Eugene, just to see your face when you were told it was Rs 70 not Rs. 17 - I still laugh when I think of it hee hee!!). It was good to talk to you Samir and am sorry to have missed you while you were in Goa but will surely catch up when you tour Sydney again. Seb DC and Tome, what happened mate?? Didn't hear from either of you phonies?? I'm sure I've missed out others' names as I can't recall many. I do apologise. I was pleasantly surprised or more shocked to hear that some of you remembered me from days gone by especially Eugene, how on earth did you remember me from my old email address - that was unbelievable. We had a fabulous time in Goa, made the most of it, ate all the delicious foods, saw all the places, met alot of people and made alot of friends with the locals for eg our rickshaw guy was great, he even insisted that we go over to his place for lunch where his mother cooked up a feast of prawn curry/rice, fried stuffed mackerel, vegetables. It was finger lickin' good. I thought the gesture on his part was just unbelievable. Then when he came to pick us up a few days later, he brought us a container of 'bhaji' cooked by his mum for us to have for lunch. It was very sweet and thoughtful. When he took us to Old Goa to see SFX, he stayed with us for 2 hours in the queue and the charge was minimum. Also at Mapusa markets, he came along with us for hours through the shops and bargained for us, advised us on our purchases and was a tremendous guide. He never overcharged us and was hesitant to even take any money for the transport. When my mum had food poisoning, he rang to see how she was. He even took our phone number and address so he can keep in touch with us in Sydney. He's become a good friend. So did the coffee shop owner in Panjim where we would go to have coffee. We got talking and became friends, he took our phone number too and said he would call. And the boat guys from the cruise cooked us amortik and had us over a second time for a cruise. Not to mention the hotel staff all became very close. We bought alot of stuff, had to pay heaps for excess luggage but it was worthwhile. Quarantine at Sydney Airport threw out a few packets of sausages but quite a few packets survived as they weren't detected plus all the other food items like dried Bombay Ducks, sweets, cashews, feni all came through no hassles at all. It seems like a dream that I was ever in Goa but I certainly will remember the trip for years to come and hope to return to Goa again. Once again, thank you FN for everything and it was great meeting all of you as well. Yes, Melinda I agree, the women on goanet have to have a more active voice in this pool of mere males!!! Some of you were keen to know about immigration to Australia, I can't remember specific details of who asked what but if you are interested, you can contact me direct via email and I will attempt to shed some light on immigration issues. Also some of you wanted my email address, so as promised here it is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hope each one of you have a tremendous 2005. cheers chris

[Goanet]Goa - Social History or hysteria too?
AlmeidaG(ji) forwarded the post below to the net. I am not sure if this was in response to my post requesting for an education of the VIOLENT ASPECTS of Portuguese era in Goa. If this was so, then it is a poor HISTORY RESPONSE to 451 years of Portuguese rule. I will definitely make it a point to read the book when I lay my hands on it. Goan and non-Goan readers may want to review the archives on the dialogue we had on GoaNet and TGF in March to May of 1974 about SFX and the Inquisition in Goa - NOT THE inquisition in Europe. There was also a big disparity / difference between what was generally claimed and what the actual data / statistics and individual examples revealed. Not having enough negatives to say about the INQUISITION AGAINST GOANS, some referred to the inquisition against crypto-Jews. But none could tell us if they were in Goa. Others may want to read Amchi Khobor-Our News-Inside Goa (US $5:00 + pp) which describes in fair detail the cultural practices of the Goan community. The book looks at the practices and the similarities in social rituals in the culture of the Goan Catholic and the Goan Hindu communities, AFTER 451 years of Portuguese rule. Many Goan Catholics may choose not to practice these rituals or their native language. But then, they cannot blame the colonials for their lapses, which is even greater in the post-colonial period. Of course some blame the Indian govt. for this. There were undoubtedly spasmodic episodes of physical violence brought about by avoidable and unavoidable colonial military actions. The military cruelty was in keeping with the violence of the history starting with Alexander-the- Great and continued with wars by Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Muslim, Portuguese and British, and or for that matter even today!!! The book, based on the author's doctoral thesis, documents the historical evolution of the Goan society spread over 130 years. The period of study covers the early years of Portuguese rule. [Goanet]Half truths
Headline: Half truths By: Mario Rodrigues Source: The Statesman, 10 January 2005 at http://www.thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=30id=65460usrsess=1 Excerpts: Sections of the Catholic intelligentsia have taken the state government to task for this attempt to misuse history for political purposes, as seasoned Goan journalist Frederick Noronha has put it. Malevolent priests too go about their gory evangelical mission as if colonialism was nothing but a religious war. FULL TEXT: A film on the Liberation of Goa, sent recently to state schools, has outraged a large section of historians, intellectuals and Catholics by making a mockery of the symbols of Christianity. Mario Rodrigues reports JUST a few weeks ago the International Film Festival of India was raking in all the publicity for Goa and its feisty chief minister, Manohar Parrikar. Now a film has been making news in the state, and all for the wrong reasons. The credits of the 68-minute documentary, Goa Ka Swadhinta Sangram (Goa's Liberation Struggle), produced and distributed by the state government, openly acknowledge Parrikar as the inspiration behind it. But this time around there are more brickbats than bouquets for the chief minister who has been uncharacteristically forced on the backfoot for something that might not be his own individual creation but dictated by the ideology of the party to which he belongs. The pugnacious Parrikar has surprisingly backtracked and said that he is not averse to making appropriate changes to the film, which its critics want totally scrapped and withdrawn. The controversy erupted when the education department sent VCDs to all schools in Goa on the occasion of Liberation Day (Goa was liberated by the Indian Army on 19 December, 1961), requesting them to screen the film and report compliance! Parrikar now says screening the film, made incidentally in 2002, was optional and VCDs were sent to the educational institutions merely for the record. There could be more than a change of heart in Parrikar's muted response to the controversy. Now that efforts to destablise his ministry by the Congress-led opposition are being pursued with renewed vigour, perhaps he does not want to rock his own boat by antagonising the Catholic community, which forms about 30 per cent of the 1.4 million population of the state. Parrikar is being propped up by a few Catholic legislators like Mathany Saldanha, Babush Monseratte and Isidore Fernandes, some of whom hold ministerial portfolios. Given the record and attempts of the erstwhile BJP-led NDA to rewrite history in tune with its communal and questionable world-view, many people will see the point of the film's critics who allege that it reeks of communal overtones and propagates a distorted view of history. Sections of the Catholic intelligentsia have taken the state government to task for this attempt to misuse history for political purposes, as seasoned Goan journalist Frederick Noronha has put it. Delio Mendonca, director of the Xavier Centre for Historical Research has panned the film for being intentionally provocative and biased and unfortunately very insensitive and regrettable. His main point of disagreement is that it makes a mockery of the symbols of Christianity by focusing intensively and extensively on churches, the cross and holy images - and that, too, out of context - and associating these with Portuguese rule. The Congress, too, has risen up in protest and the party's Vichar Vibhag chairman, Uday Bhembre, has alleged that the project is a deliberate and malicious attempt to pursue the communal agenda of the Sangh Parivar under the pretext of presenting the history of Goa's freedom struggle. What has damaged the government's case is that several notables from the majority community have also condemned the film as forcefully. Renowned Konkani poet and historian Dr Manoharrai Sardessai said he found the film terribly disappointing. It's a third-rate, pathetic film and I don't want to watch it again. Such a film shouldn't be shown in Goa, he declared. Vasant Molio, president of the Goa, Daman and Diu Freedom Fighters' Association, on his part, has disputed the government's claim that the film has been accepted by the state's freedom fighters and has instead asked the government to withdraw the objectionable film and tender an apology to the freedom fighters. On the other hand, the government's own troops from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shiv Sena and the Marathi lobby have been equally vociferous in supporting the film. Veteran Marathi stage artiste and student of history, Bhiku Pai Angle has claimed from first-hand experience that the proselytisation efforts of the missionaries were indeed brutal and the government was absolutely justified in telecasting the VCD. Noted freedom fighter and former state police chief, Prabhakar Sinari, has argued that the film depicts historical facts - bitter or otherwise - in

[Goanet]The Whole Truth
http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=04102 The Whole Truth THE educational CD published by the Government of Goa on Goas freedom struggle has stirred a controversy about the role played by the Catholic community and the Roman Catholic Church in the struggle. The secularists, as usual, are trying to rewrite history. But the facts are very clear. Following two incidents, which are well-documented, will prove the case. The first incident occurred in 1954, when Nehru was preparing to liberate Goa by force. At the time, there was a mass vigil held by the Roman Catholic Church at Old Goa in support of the Portuguese rule. Nehru chickened out under pressure from the US and the UK and did not send troops to Goa. The next incident occurred in 1962, soon after Goas liberation. Once again a candlelight vigil was held at Old Goa asking the all-powerful saint to ensure the return of Dr Salazar, the then dictator of Portugal. There may have been Catholic freedom fighters in Goan history. But a number of them and the clerics were solidly pro-Portuguese. [Goanet]Advantage China as reforms give airspace restructuring a miss
Interesting article relating also to the Dabolim/Mopa controversy, on who is dominating the Indian skies and how this is affecting India. http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=62401 -- Advantage China as reforms give airspace restructuring a miss THE INDIAN EXPRESS IATA: Ready with network of 3 direct routes from Europe and East Asia via China, airlines could save upto Rs 1.2 lakh per flight PRANAB DHAL SAMANTA Posted online: Monday, January 10, 2005 at 0032 hours IST NEW DELHI, JANUARY 9: Reforms in Indias aviation sector are finally taking off, but theres still a big blip on the radar that seems to have escaped serious attention: airspace restructuring. Much of Indian airspace is still under Defence control and as a result, the country runs the risk of losing Rs 190 crorehalf its revenue from overflightsto China in the coming years. For, China offers a shorter and more economical alternative to flights between Europe and East Asia, arguably the busiest sector in the world. The International Air Transporters Association (IATA) has worked out a network of three direct routes from Europe and East Asia via China, and indications are that Beijing is keen on operationalising them at the earliest. The routes run north of the Himalayas on the Chinese side and will be 25 minutes shorter than the existing ones through India. According to IATA, airlines could save upto Rs 1.2 lakh per flight if they take these routes, which connect all important destinations in the region: from Tokyo and Seoul to Bangkok and Singapore in South East Asia to the direct air route that runs north of the Himalayas into Central Asia and Europe. India earns Rs 347 crore a year from overflights but once these routes open up, there could be a drastic cut in aircraft overflying the country. And, according to projections with the Civil Aviation Ministry, India will lose about Rs 190 crore of this revenue. India, however, could still be the shorter option if it aggressively takes up the issue of restructuring its airspace and straighten out some of the most circuitous air routes of the world. While there has been some restructuring in Southern India, most routes in Central and northern parts remain unchanged, largely due to Defence restrictions. In fact, 65 per cent of Delhi airspace is controlled by the Air Force. As a result, some long-pending proposals for straightening route alignments continue to gather dust. For instance, here are two such route proposals which, if implemented, would make it easier for overflying aircraft: Direct link moving South of Himalayas till Dehradun and directly to Islamabad Direct link from Central India to Rahimyar Khan in Pakistan, providing the shortest air corridor for flights entering peninsular India Its learnt that several such options had been drawn up in the past but could not be implemented because Defence Ministry has not given clearance. Besides, there are restrictions placed in several other existing routes on time, number of flights, and altitude levels for international carriers. The good news, however, is that India has some inherent advantages, which it could utilise to compete with China: Better weather conditions for most part of the year No permanent jet stream winds Indian air traffic controllers proficient in English More number of alternate airports enroute, in case of an emergency As the stage gets set for the battle of the skies between India and China, experts say civilian and Defence authorities will have to adopt and quickly implement the concept of flexible use of airspace. This will make air navigation a joint affair, they say, and allow straightening of route alignments to ensure that India remains a key player in the business of overflights where it already enjoys a headstart because of its geographical location. -- * Goa @ http://www.supergoa.com/ _ Don't just search. An honorary tribute to all the 'Senior Most Konkani Stage Artists' for their dedicated service to the Konkani Stage will unfold in the form of musical extravagance, family drama par excellence and rib-ticking comedy with selected artistes from Goa, Mumbai and Kuwait. Pick a cast of dramatic actors who can carry a tune, and comedians with a flair for slapstick and credible cross-dressing. Stir in a Konkani script peppered with flowery metaphors, broad innuendoes and show stopping jokes. Mix in melodramatic acting, vibrant sets, costumes in the latest fashions, and a live orchestra. Top with a title that is bold and direct. Voila! You have a recipe for a musical show such as the second annual presentation of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha (KGTS) titled Konknni Machiek Noman - the medium of folk theatre traditiona that is one of the most savoury and enjoyable tidbits of popular Goan culture. Both in Goa and overseas, wherever there is an audience, big or small. The KGTS' musical show in association with Goan Welfare Society (GWS) will be held on Friday, 4th February 2005 at the Gulf English School Auditorium, Rumaithiya, Kuwait from 3:30 p.m. KGTS since its formation in 2002 on the initiative of popular Konkani stage singer and director, Marcus Vaz, enjoys vast following and is the only Goan association established exclusively for the upliftment of Konkani stage and assistance to fellow senior Tiatrists among the largest concentration of talented singers, writers, directors, stage technicians and musicians in Kuwait. Last year, KGTS' presentation Tiatr ani Tiatrist was a unique offering to the die-hard tiatr lovers in Kuwait. Monetary assistance was sent by KGTS at the hands of its committee members and was well appreciated by (late) MARY VAZ, PREM KUMAR, PAUL ROMY, ROAM TONY, and JOHN NAZARETH. [Goanet] Misinformation on Global Warming
In a previous post on the fallacies behind human endeavor being responsible for global warming I said: How do we deal with just Mount St. Helens, now belching several years worth of man made greenhouse gases into the atmosphere ever day. Try putting a cork on that one small natural cause! Or the gases produced by rotting vegetation worldwide or the effects from evaporation from all bodies of water. Environmental activist Santosh Helekar responded: The above statements are completely false. He then goes on to cite the typical propaganda that is put out by environmental activists about how humans are responsible for creating all this carbon dioxide that is causing global warming. Woe is us. Mario replies: The composition of the earth's atmosphere is 79% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 1% other gases. This is from the University of Tennessee web site: http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/earth/atmosphere.html So let's recap. 1% of the earth's atmosphere is comprised of gases other than nitrogen and oxygen. Therefore a fraction of 1% is carbon dioxide. Since some carbon dioxide is caused by nature, humans are responsible for creating carbon dioxide that is an even smaller percentage of the earth's atmosphere. The hot air that gets the environmentalists hot under the collar, pardon the obvious puns, is thus a tiny fraction of the earth's atmosphere. This miniscule percentage is what they want the western industrial world to curb through the Kyoto Treaty, at tremendous expense and disruption, while at the same time exempting India and China, two of the top four largest economies in the world, and two of the fastest growing, both of which have little or no environmental controls at this time. If this makes sense to you, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you in NY city that could be a tremendous investment for the toll revenues it brings in. Of course there is more to my previous post that Santosh conveniently ignores, which bear repeating: Frozen Siberia was once covered by forests. Lush North America was once covered with a sheet of ice, all before the first automobile was invented. This is a far more complex and controversial issue than the absolute, left-wing version, their absolute solutions and the politically motivated exemptions in their treaties for India and China, two large and fast growing economies with little or no environmental controls. Since failing to use socialism and communism to bring the world down to the lowest common denominator, the left-wing has decided to try and achieve the same ends through the only remaining option available to them, the environment. The attempt will fail just as surely as the previous one did.
[Goanet]GoanetReader -- Cuncolim's persistence pays off... on the football ground
CUNCOLIM'S PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF... ON THE FOOTBALL GROUND By Armstrong Augusto Vaz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cuncolim Union football team has been able to make a mark in inter village football in the last couple of years with their consistent performance in the several inter village football tournaments held in South Goa. Recently, Cuncolim Union won the Navelim Villagers Cup final at Navelim defeatiung Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda. This is the first title for Cuncolim Union in the season after finishing on the losing side in four other finals and also bowing out in the semifinals on six occasions. Marshaled and coached by an experienced campaigner in Levino Dias, the coaching stalwart, Cuncolim Union has a well-devised youth development plan in place for the last twelve years. Persistent effort of Cuncolkars in grooming and guiding young footballers have yield results. Three junior footballers from Cuncolim represented the state last season, while another three of them are representing professional league clubs. This year Sarvesh Naik and Satyadeep Niak represented the Goa school state level team too. This writer, secretary of the club, has penned these few lines for Cuncolim residents across the globe, reading this out there via the Net. This article takes a closer look at the club to find out more about its progress made over the past 32 years of its existance. Cuncolim Union was officially registered in 1972, but existed even before, during the pre-1961 period both in Goa and in Mumbai, among expats. It took part in the inter village football tournaments in Mumbai and football tournaments in Goa. The Mumbai unit of Cuncolim Union had to change its name to the present Cuncolim Association Mumbai owing to the rules in force in Mumbai (then still called Bombay). Incidentally Cuncolim Association Mumbai was instrumental in sponsoring the Cuncolim inter village and youth teams for the ten years in the period between 1990-2000. In the last four years, the Cuncolim counterparts in Mumbai have been linked with Cuncolim Union under 12, under 15 and other youth teams. The budget of the youth team has been funded by Cuncolim Association Mumbai. Thanks to the efforts of the team headed by Robin Almeida, the help for last ten years has lead to the flowering of many a young footballer. Records available with club indicate that High Court judge Justice Ferdino Rebello, Justice Nelson Britto, late Baldwin Coutinho (ex-chief officer Margao Municipality), Armando barbosa (ex-hief officier and sub-divisional magistrate at Quepem), Joasinho Fernandes, Alvito Coutinho, Robert Almeida, Orlando Coutinho, Adv Shripad Patnekar, Sylvano Rodrigues, Levino Dias, Zephyrus Mascarenhas, Ramesh Dessai, Altinho Gomes and the late John Fernandes were the group of persons with sporting interests in mind who set up the union in 1972, registering it with the Goa Football Association and the Sports Authority of Goa. Its constitution laid down the aims and objectives as encouraging sports and, fostering social co-operation among the villagers of Cuncolim and promoting their social economic and intellectual advancement by holding a social gathering at least once a year, encouraging activities such as sports, arts and crafts, besides organising debates, lectures and other literary activities. Cuncolim Union old time players and supporters have strong affiliation and fondness for the three-coloured dress which they wore in the earlier years. The colours of yellow, red and green made the Cuncolim team stand out over others on the football field, and each of colours signified a unique feature of Cuncolim village, which the players carried onto the football field. Former secretary of Cuncolim Union Prof Vers Coutinho, a former professor at the Chicago University in USA, informs that the logo of Cuncolim Union is the torch and the red colour on the dress reminds Cuncolim people of the blood that their forefathers shed for Cuncolim. The torch of the 'jyot' reminds them that the people of Cuncolim were in the forefront of leading their opposition to alien rule, he adds. On the current performance in this season, Cuncolim has been unable to break the jinxed of losing in the finals. On four occasions that the club has reached the finals, it finished the losing side on all occasions. The intervillage team has also lost out in seven semifinals, losing yet another chance to have a shot at the title. Treasurer and technical director of the team and former Dempo Sports Club striker Siano Fernandes credits the success to hard work of the boys, but adds there is scope for improvement. New players are coming up and there is competition for places, he adds. The key area is the goalkeeping, where Cuncolim Union are looking for safe pair of hands. The boys are always eager to give their best. Among young
[Goanet]Governor -- Goa far from developed
Goa far from developed: governor HERALD CORRESPONDENT SANGUEM, JAN 9 -- Stating that Goa was not a developed State, Governor S C Jamir said that many rural areas were yet to be provided with the basic necessities of water, education, roads and health. On Sunday, during his tour around the wards of Nanegotton, Korlamoddi, Korla, Cazur, Devrem in Pirla in Quepem and Mangal in Sanguem and after an interaction with the poor villagers residing in these villages, Mr Jamir further remarked We shall be fooling ourselves, if we term these villages to be developed when the villagers residing here lack all the basic necessities. After Sunday's visit to these remote villages, the governor became the first top official to visit these villages after Collector J B Singh's visit to Korla and Korlamoddi a couple of years ago. With the governor having decided to visit the villages, which are all, situated on mountain areas with no tarred roads, all other government officials including Chief Secretary Negi, Collector South J B Singh, Deputy Collector Quepem Kankar Velip, DySp Mohan Naik, PI Nelson Albuquerque and several other officials from PWD (Roads), Water Supply, RDA, Electricity, PHE and Agriculture were compelled to follow suit. The governor's tour to the villages began as early as 8.15 a.m., with the governor first visiting the Nanegotton ward where he had to walk quite a distance on the hilly terrain to hear the people, and concluded at 2.45 p.m. at Don Bosco, Sulcorna. After hearing the grievances of villagers at all the places of his visit, the governor directed the official concerned to get their grievances solved at least in cases which are viable and which the villagers have been demanding since the past several decades. At Nanegotton, villagers complained of the acute drinking water problem they have to face in the month of May and also stressed on the problems they encounter in the absence of any steps and motorable road to their village. The governor urged the RDA officials to see if the problem of constructing steps to the village could be solved under the RDA scheme, while the agriculture department was asked to study the problems faced by the villagers on drinking water front and get them solved. The frequent snapping of electricity lines and also the panchayat's failure to undertake any development work in the village figured at the meeting. On being informed by the PWD authorities of the heavy cost involved in getting the land acquired for the construction of the road to the village, the villagers assured in gifting their land to the government for the construction of the road. When the officials queried of objections being raised by the forest department at certain places for the construction of roads, the governor remarked that humans were more important and said that it appeared as if the government was blind after seeing the plight of the villagers residing in these villages. The problems faced by the villagers at all other places of the visit were similar. At Korla, Korlamoddi, Cazur, Devrem and Mangal, the villagers expressed the need for the construction of tarred road and due provision for drinking water and health facilities. At Korla, Devrem and Mangal, the PWD officials were once again directed to study the water problems faced by the villagers and take appropriate steps in getting the same solved. At Korla, a villager pointed out that while the PWD officials claimed to have constructed a water tank in the village way back in the year 1978, the villager claimed that there never existed a water tank in the village being constructed by the government. The Governor after personally inspecting the lone spring existing in the village, urged the officials to get the spring excavated, if feasible, to ease the drinking water problems faced by the villagers. It was also pointed out that the villagers, at times of sickness had to travel a distance of over 35 kilometres to get to the nearest health center. Villagers also expressed their woes of getting to the medical health center stands compounded in the absence of proper roads and transport facility in the villages. They mentioned an incident of a woman delivering on the way to hospital. Deputy Collector Kankar Velip assured the Devrem villagers of all the possible help from his end in getting their grievances solved with respect to land dispute. The need for the construction of school buildings was also felt at Cazur where two classes were being conducted in a cowshed. The tribal people at Devrem also urged the need for the construction of a school building as the only primary school in the village continued to be housed in a private premise, since its inception. Mr Jamir directed the chief secretary to take note of some of the problems faced by the villagers, which could be taken care off by the government. +++

[Goanet]Re:Dabolim should continue as civilian airport, says South Goa Lok Sabha Member Churchill Alemao
The subject posting [Jan 9] should be read in conjunction with the following excerpt from Goacom Daily News Clippings: GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 09 January, 2005 NO FINAL DECISION ON MOPA AIRPORT: Civil aviation minister Praful Patel informed South Goa Member of Parliament Churchill Alemao that although Mopa was selected as the site for an international airport, no final decision had been taken. The minister was replying to a debate in the parliament.Churchill has been demanding an assurance on the continuance of the civilian airport at Dabolim even in the event of Mopa becoming functional as international airport. (WE-GT) It is good that Churchill Alemao's efforts are finally seeing the light of day (after a four month period), at least in some sections of the Goa press. The Herald did not carry the item under reference. It would be helpful if a complete transcript of the MP's intervention in Parliament was made available at some point along with the Defence Minister's reply. It is interesting that on the issue of Mopa airport both the South Goa MP from the ruling party at the Centre as well as the Tourism Minister from the BJP led government in Goa are pretty much on the same wavelength in down playing its importance/emergence. So there can be said to be bipartisan support for scrapping Mopa. However, the Civil Aviation Minister has seen fit to include Mopa in his list of potential greenfield airports, I think 5 in number. Of these Bangalore and Hyderabad are proceeding at full throttle now. Mopa has a question mark over it so the Minister can conveniently devote his attention to the other two whichever they are. Mumbai is of course high on the Minister's priorities (along with Delhi). So three (out of 6 or 8) of Goa's neighboring airports are going to be in full flow in a few years time. What about Goa? Once Mopa is scratched from the list we will be stuck with Dabolim which itself is in limbo. The MPs and Ministers just dont seem to be in the know of the status of the airport at Seabird and what it will take to come on par with what the Navy needs to substitute for Dabolim and how and when that will happen to faciltate relocation. So the handwriting on the wall is clear: Goa will muddle through in aviation but will probably never get on top of it at least for the next decade.

[Goanet]G'day from SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Hi folks, Well, I'm back in Sydney, only arrived a couple of days ago, having been in Goa for one month. It was absolutely fantastic to see everyone at Club Vasco. It was great to put faces to names - Vivian (and I can't remember the name of Vivian's friend who was talking to us - from Florida??), Melinda, Cecil, Bosco, Floriano, Silviano, Tony CA, Fred, Eugene (I hope you read the Friday Balcao cover to cover what with the Rs. We had a fabulous time in Goa, made the most of it, ate all the delicious foods and saw all the places, bought alot of stuff, had to pay heaps for excess luggage but it was worthwhile.

[Goanet]RIBANDAR CHURCH MOLESTATION CASE : REVIEW PETITION FILED
A review petition has been filed today before Goa Children's Court against the order passed on 7th January disallowing on point of maintainability the private criminal complaint filed by Mr. Anthony Frois uncle of the minor girl allegedly molested by Ribandar Parish priest Fr. Newton Rodrigues. The petition is expected to come up for hearing on Friday 14th January before the Children's court headed by South District Judge A.D Salkar. In the review petition filed by Mr. Anthony Frois it has been submitted that the Children's Act does not bar cognizance or trial for offences under other Acts and that the offences allegedly committed by the accused priest is also under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and that above all section 20 of the Children's Act does not bar the Court from taking cognizance of a private complaint. It has been also submitted that section 31 of the Goa's Children's Act expressly makes the Children's Court a Court of exclusive jurisdiction to try all offences against children whether under the Act or not and that this aspect has been completely missed by the Court in disallowing the private criminal complaint.
[Goanet]How does one 'recount' a film without using adjectives?
Gilbert Lawrence writes: The controversy on this film was its contents. I wish those members of this mailing list who saw the film recounted for us the contents of the film. We could do without the adjectives and descriptives. -- As a keen student of the English language I would like Gilbert to explain to us how one goes about 'recounting' the contents of a movie without using 'adjectives and descriptives'. Maybe he could 'recount' for us the first one hour of the blockbusting movie 'Titanic' (which we have all seen) without using 'adjectives and descriptives' so we can understand what he means by 'recount'. If Gilbert wants a frame by frame description of the movie that could be arranged but 'adjectives and descriptives' will necessarily have to be used. But to what purpose? The contents of the movie have been 'recounted' time and again on these forums. Many overseas Goans who want to see for themselves have already managed to get copies and make their opinion. Gilbert should do the same instead of trying to educate those who 'comment' on how to 'recount' a movie. Cecil

[Goanet]Uday Bhembre comments on the controversial Liberation Film
Source: http://www.goanobserver.com WAS INQUISITION A PART OF GOA'S LIBERATION STRUGGLE? The subject of the documentary is Goa's freedom struggle and not the history of Goa. Conversion and inquisition are a part of Goa's history and are not relevant as regards the history of freedom struggle. The struggle for freedom was intended to end the rule of an alien nation (Portugal) wherein Hindus and Christians fought hand in hand. It was not a struggle for or against any religion. BY UDAY BHEMBRE. WE HAVE VIEWED the VCD 'Goa Freedom Struggle' produced by the Directorate of Education of Government of Goa, several times with a critical eye. We have cross-checked the scenes and the narration in the VCD with the historical records. Upon studying the VCD from various angles like script, depiction of events, production values, research and overall impact, we have reached the following findings, reasons for which also follow. FINDINGS The documentary 'Goa Freedom Struggle' is a deliberate and malicious attempt to pursue the communal agenda of the Sangh Parivar and to inject communal poison in the society under the pretext of presenting the history of Goa's freedom struggle. The documentary, instead of becoming educative, has become repulsive as it leaves a bad taste due to exaggerated and violent as well as gory depiction of events, which are extraneous to and irrelevant in the context of the freedom struggle, the underlying motive being to arouse communal passions. The documentary is full of distortions of historical events and is replete with figments of imagination, which are contrary to the recorded history. Those responsible for the research of the documentary have utterly failed in their duty and have dealt with most events casually without putting in any study and relying purely on imagination. The script committee has miserably failed in vetting the script, which appears to have been written by someone who is not familiar with Goa's history, geography and culture. The committee appointed by the Government of Goa to oversee the project of producing the documentary has acted irresponsibly in as much as it has allowed distortions of history, unwarranted emphasis on religion and religious symbols, major as well as minor blunders and a presentation of the freedom struggle as a play staged by school children. The documentary is full of erroneous scenes and statements, which are bound to misinform and mislead the viewers. As extraneous and unwarranted episodes are brought in with a sinister motive, the actual struggle for freedom had to be compressed within about 40 minutes. Consequently it has become sketchy, ineffective and has left out important information and significant developments. The documentary, which is a bundle of distortions, imaginations and errors, does not do justice either to the freedom struggle or to the freedom fighters. The documentary is not fit even for adult viewing. It is bound to misinform and mislead the students and arouse communal passions. The documentary, which is produced with a sinister motive and which is full of defects of all kinds, deserves to be destroyed lest it is believed in future to be an authentic presentation of Goa's freedom struggle. COMMUNAL AGENDA The subject of the documentary is Goa's freedom struggle and not the history of Goa. Conversion and inquisition are a part of Goa's history; but are certainly not relevant as regards the history of freedom struggle. The struggle for freedom was intended to end the rule of an alien nation (Portugal) in this part of the country. In this struggle Hindus and Christians fought hand in hand against the Portuguese. It was not a struggle for or against any religion. The struggle was essentially political and had no religious overtones at all. The history of conversion and religious persecution is irrelevant as far as the struggle for freedom is concerned. Yet, it was brought in and emphasized to inject communal poison on the minds of the viewers, to arouse communal passions and to divide the society. One third part of the footage is used to depict the period of conversion and inquisition. In doing so history is distorted, relevant facts are suppressed and events have been shown in an exaggerated and crude manner. Only communal minds can connect those events of the 16th and 17th century to the freedom struggle that essentially took place in the 20th century. The fact that conversion and inquisition affected only four talukas of Tiswadi, Salcete, Mormugao and Bardez is suppressed and an impression is given that the religious persecution took place all over Goa. The fact that inquisition punished the converts (Jews who had come from Portugal had become 'New Christians' and the local converts) and it is they who bore the brunt of the religious frenzy has been suppressed. Add to it, no good coffee except for that sickly-sweet stuff that comes out of a machine marked Nescafe (which is of no help to a diabetic), and that too if the attendant is on duty. The other problem I faced is that even after paying for a ticket in US$ and getting a confirmation, I was told at the airport that my name was not on the passenger list. The last time I travelled to Goa (Aug 2003), I was very lucky indeed. Arrived Mumbai airport at 2:00am after an 18-hour flight from Melbourne, no signs of a possible early morning IA flight (for which I had a confirmed ticket). Manager arrives at 5:00am, on enquiring told me all IA early-morning flights to Goa were cancelled earlier that week. To give him due credit, he made a phone call, endorsed my ticket and told me to get to the Jet Airways counter asap via the inter-terminal bus service; lady luck was smiling on me that morning, as I got the very last seat - felt sorry for the other prospective passengers who had to miss the flight and catch the next available. [Goanet]RE: Mathany Saldanha on Mopa airport/ My rant
Response to Mervyn Lobo [Jan 9] I have nothing but genuine sympathy for your complaints about Indian airports. They are not pretty places for travellers. But they may well be happy hunting grounds for those who relish chaos, confusion, corruption and the like of which there probably are far too many for our own good. My earnest hope is that we can set things right at Goa's airport(s) to begin with. But I am under no illusion that this itself is an unholy mess! I am glad that you highlighted the two points I had raised viz 1) who is responsible for shut down of Dabolim in the evening, the Navy or the AAI and 2) does Dabolim experience operational problems due to fog or rather smog perhaps due to the air pollution in the Mormugoa/Vasco area. According to recent reports the airport closure can take place anywhere from 6 or 7 pm on one side to 10:30 pm or 12 midnight on the other. Seems like the shut down time is fairly arbitrary and might explain the kind of problems you experienced. Why is this so? Let's hope some light can be shed on this matter.
[Goanet]Re: Ribandar case the case of the slipping hand
Dear Samirbab, Hold your breath for a few seconds. Let's see if we can hear directly from this independent investigator Auda Viegas - who also happens to be (according to Advocate Aires Rodrigues) the complainant to the police. From my perspective (and I have NO mercy to offer if the child was molested). I also consider it inappropriate for any priest to PLAY with even a pendant which is on another person's body - unless the person is an adult has consented to the PLAY. However, We have No confessions ( no pun intended ), No cross-examination of the accusers, ONLY trial via Internet by someone who definitely appears to have other issues with this priest. I'd also like to hear from Auda Viegas IF this 13 year old child's privacy rights were violated by those who plastered the name of her Uncle all over the Internet. Unless of course, this Uncle has several 13 year old nieces . jose === From: samir_kelekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] And since when his hands slipped, they (the breasts) didnt feel like a pendant, he started playing around with them to see what they really were. [Goanet]Scientists warn of another tsunami in India (Mumbai/Orisa)
Scientists warn of another tsunami in India PTI[ SUNDAY, JANUARY 09, 2005 08:07:44 PM ] (TOI) MUMBAI: The Consortium of Indian Scientists (CIS) on Sunday cautioned the Centre that coasts of Mumbai and Orissa could be hit by tsunami anytime in the near future and disaster management cell should be in place to tackle the potential threat. The Consortium, which had prepared a map taking the data from various sources including World Meteorological Department and other seismic centres in India, warned a possible tsunami due to undersea earthquakes in the south Asian region. The map also showed a milder version of tsunami in the Arabian sea region, Convenor and Secretary General of the CIS, PD Bhatnagar said at the plenary session on Disaster Management and Rehabilitation: the role of overseas Indians, at the third Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations. We are not predicting but cautioning the government as there are 200 inter-dependent factors involved in construction of this map. Therefore, the Indian scientists should focus on studies on various parameters in depth to combat any unforeseen disaster, Bhatnagar, who is also a consultant for National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), said. Bhatnagar advocated that the coastal areas in India could be saved from such calamities using proper Rock Geometry and Tree Geometry. He also suggested the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to take this data seriously and evolve scientific investigations accordingly. = for NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ for SFX Expo cheap Goa flights info.. http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/LetsGotoGoa/ ___ ALL-NEW Yahoo! Just two small admin points -- It would be nice if every poster to Goanet could sign their posts with their location (even address and phonenumber, if you're not too privacy conscious!). This is only a request; I'm sure it would help for better networking among the various posters, on-list and off. Secondly, if you post in non-plaintext format, then your post could (i) get rejected, and not make it to Goanet (ii) make it to Goanet after a delay... and a lot of grumble, grumble, grumble on the admin's side. Depending on how busy/sleepy/hassled we're feeling, you might get a cryptic note saying something like Thank you for posting, Goanet doesn't accept non-plaintext posts. What this means is that while we may well have no objection to *what* you're saying, we do have a problem with the format (non-text) in which your posting. Rediffmail.com is particularly problematic when it comes to wanting to post in plain-text. AOL and other ISPs (internet service providers) give an option. Admin member Bosco D'Mello -- somewhere between Mumbai and Toronto -- is the expert on this, and you can get tech help from [EMAIL PROTECTED] If your post gets rejected, it might get reformatted and re-posted. [Goanet]Dual Citizenship
DUAL CITIZENSHIP TO ALL OVERSEAS INDIANS: Accepting the long-standing demand of overseas Indians, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, announced on January 7, granting dual citizenship to all those who migrated from India after January 26, 1950. I wonder if dual citizenship would be a boon or a bane. First of all, the dual citizenship is limited to a few facilities. Secondly, one has also to consider one's safety. Consider if a dual citizen (British/Indian) is unjustly accused of a crime - he/she will be tried under India laws with no recourse to assistance from the British govt. Given that (to my limited knowledge) legal procedures in India are long-winded, and that no-one gets anywhere without pay-backs (aka bakshish), is dual citizenship desirable? I remember reading in a Bangalore newspaper a number of years ago (circa Jan 1996), about an Indian citizen married to a Swiss national who was framed on a flimsy charge when he came to Bangalore on a holiday; the poor guy ended up in jail as he could not cough up the ransom demanded by police. [Goanet]Article on tsunami in text form!
Dear Sir, I am enclosing below my article again - this time in text form only. The article is in the form of an interview. I would very much appreciate if the article is posted in Goanet A.A. Fernandes _ Gauribidanur seismic array: Is it relevant to tsunami prediction? by A. A. Fernandes On Sunday 26 December 2004 an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale occurred in the Bay of Bengal with its epicentre just off the coast of Sumatra. A tsunami caused by this earthquake inundated coastal areas in the Bay of Bengal taking a death toll of 150,000 people in India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. An entire Indian air force base was washed away on Car Nicobar island. To know more on this subject than has been published in Indian as well as foreign print and audio visual media, Simplicius of the Omega Times spoke to Dr. A. A. Fernandes, scientist at the National Institute of Oceanography situated at Dona Paula. Simplicius: What is a tsunami? What causes it? Fernandes: Tsunamis are long waves in the ocean caused by natural events occurring in the ocean such as eartquakes, land slides, volcanic eruptions and impact of meteorites. Tsunamis can also be caused anthropogenically by nuclear detonations below the sea floor. In the deep ocean a tsunami may have a harmless height of one meter, but as a tsunami approaches the coast; due to the shallow depth, it can turn into a massive wall of water as much as 100 feet. The first few waves hitting the coast are the deadliest. The higher the magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter scale, the larger is the tsunami wave height. As the Richter scale is logarithmic an increase in one unit of this scale represents a tenfold amplification of earthquake intensity. Simplicius: What is your field of specialization? In what way is it related to earthquakes and tsunamis? Fernandes: I am having 30 years experience in NIO working on ocean waves (period T = 1 to 30 seconds), infra gravity waves (T = 30 seconds to 5 minutes), astronomical tide, storm surges, currents and statistical prediction of paleoclimate. In the last two years I have also been studying the propagation of Rossby waves and Kelvin waves. I have expertise in time series analysis, multivariate analysis and computer progamming in Fortran language. I got the most job satisfaction working on the determination of wave direction and wavelength of ocean waves from array measurements using both computer simulated as well as measured data. The measured data came from an operational array at Duck, North Carolina, USA. The Duck array had an aperture of 280 metres. I have published 5 papers as well as a technical report on my array work between 1986 to 2002. The same subject also fetched me a PhD degree in Marine Science from Goa University in 2000 at the hands of Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi. The title of my PhD thesis is Study of the directional spectrum of ocean waves using array, buoy and radar measurements. My distant familiarity with earthquake directionality and its location also came through my study of arrays. Simplicius: You have mentioned different types of waves that you have worked with in your long career, but you have not mentioned about tsunamis. How come? Has any scientist at NIO worked on tsunamis? Fernandes: At NIO we have upto now been thinking that tsunamis are a menace affecting Japan and Hawaii only, therefore requiring no attention from us. The subject of tsunami crept up only when we were discussing different types of waves, their frequency and wavelength ranges, dispersion relation, speed of propagation, restoring force, causative mechanisms, etc. Simplicius: What instruments are used for locating the epicentre and magnitude of an eathquake? Fernandes: Arrays of seismometers are used for locating the epicentre and magnitude of earthquakes. The best known arrays are the medium aperture arrays (aperture = 25 kilometres) installed by the UK in Esklalimuir, Scotland; Yellow Knife, Canada; Gauribidanur, India; Warramunga, Australia; and Brazilia, Brazil and the large aperture arrays installed by the USA in Montana, Norway and and Alaska. The aperture of the Montana array was 200 kilometres while that of Norway and Alaska was 100 kilometres. The above arrays of seismometers were deployed in the early 1960s for monitoring nuclear detonations. It appears that after our defeat in the Indo-Chinese war in 1962, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave permission to the USA to install the Gauribidanur array on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka for monitoring China's nuclear tests. There is a strong likelihood that the location and magnitude of the Sumatra earthquake reported by Reuters (Navhind times dated 27 December 2004) was determined using the Gauribidanur array. It also appears that Indian seismologists are innocent of the data
