[Goanet]Sania goes down fighting
Sania goes down fighting rediff.com Sportsdesk Last Updated: January 21, 2005 15:47 IST Sania Mirza finally got a first-hand experience of what life at the top of the tennis world might be like when she took on the might of seventh seed and former champion Serena Williams at the Australian Open on Friday. However, Serena was in no mood for games and quickly quelled the challenge from the rising Indian teenager to reach the fourth round at the Open with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. A first serve percentage of only 33 made it very difficult for Mirza to compete in the first set against the powerful all-round game of Serena. The score progressed very quickly to 5-0 and it looked as if Mirza might not get onto the board at all. But then she finally managed to hold her serve and a smile creased across her face in relief. Serena, who is yet to lose a set at this year's Open, looked in complete control upto this point and closed the first set in 20 minutes. However, the second set was a completely different story. Having won a game, Mirza's confidence came flowing back into her game. Her first-serve percentage went up and that resulted in her winning two easy service games. She earned three break points in the fourth game of the second set but Williams saved them all with good serves and leveled the scores at 2-2. Mirza was matching Serena shot for shot and the American now had to produce her best tennis. The biggest difference between the two players at this point was the serve. Serena has one of the most powerful serves in the women's game, while Mirza's is very much a work in progress. Serena broke Mirza in the seventh game to go up 4-3 in the second set. Serena then held her own serve and held two match points on Mirza's serve. Mirza saved them both with some powerful groundstrokes and then went on to hold the game. But the American still led 5-4 and served for the match. The American went up 40-0 in her service game and quickly closed the match with her 12th ace and moved into the fourth round. The second set lasted 36 minutes. Both players committed 18 unforced errors but Serena had 26 winners as compared to Mirza's 11. The Indian failed to convert any of three break points she had but Serena converted three out of six and ran out an easy winner. Mirza may have lost the match but she showed enough resilience to prove to herself and all those watching that she belongs in the top tier of women's tennis.

Re: [Goanet] Not a Canadian View
Mervyn Lobo has posted a column from The Toronto Star Jan. 20, 2005. 01:00 AM, titled Welcome to Bush Fantasy Land: The Sequel The column says in part: It has been said that George W. Bush is in denial of reality, in Iraq and elsewhere. But what of America itself? More particularly, what of the majority of Americans who re-elected him? Mario replies: This is not a Canadian view, but the patronizing and puerile view of one Haroon Siddiqi, opining in the far-left-wing Toronto Star. Mr. Siddiqi displays his solidarity with terrorists Abu Musab al Zarkawi and Osama Bin Laden. Like al Zarkawi and Bin Laden, Mr. Siddiqi deeply resents the freedom and democracy that is developing in Iraq. He also insults the Shia Grand-Ayatollah Ali al Sistani, who has issued a fatwa ordering the Shia to participate fully in the elections, and the 80% of the electorate that have vowed to vote in the Iraqi elections on January 30. Apparently freedom and democracy in Canada is fine for Mr. Siddiqi, but not for the Iraqi people.
[Goanet]RE: TGF's persona (personae) of the year 2004 - input requested
The following post appears to have NOT appeared on GoaNet. Must have been lost somewhere in cyberspace. Grateful if you good people would give some feedback tks jc The New Year is already upon us, and we at The Goan Forum take this opportunity to look back at identifying an individual or a set of individuals who have made the most distinctive contribution to Goa in the year 2004. This contribution does not necessarily have to be a beneficial contribution, only one which has been most distinctive. We intend to name the persona (personae) on January 30, 2005 - the anniversary of the murder of the Mahatma Gandhi - the world's best known proponent of non-violent Struggle against Oppression. ( I would have said senseless murder, but then which murder - is sensible? ) website url http://www.colaco.net ( undergoing some basic updating at moment - so might have a few down times - every now and again ) GRATEFUL if readers of GoaNet and Goa-Goans would submit their nominations with about 200 words as to why they support that nomination. Please do so before Jan 27, 2005. IF you have a good jpeg pic of the person(s), please send them to me. Thanks jc BTW: It is this Gandhian non-violent Struggle that brought down Apartheid in South Africamany parts of Racism in the US - thanks mainly to the sacrifices of Nelson Mandela Martin Luther King respectively. I remember reading recently (don't know where) that the scares of DDT were unfounded and were more of commercial rumour-mongering than true scientific fact; that the third world would benefit from the usage of DDT to rid the stagnant waters of mosquito-breeding larvae. Peter D'Souza responded: Gabe, perhaps you're thinking of this editorial from the Wall Street Journal: Death by Environmentalist December 29, 2004; Page A8 Mario adds: Everyone should read the Death by Environmentalist editorial in the Wall Street Jopurnal mentioned above and make up their own minds. It has been a dirty little secret for quite some time that the militant environmentalists are to blame for the resurgence of malaria, by pressurizing countries to ban DDT, using spurious evidence of health effects that were wildly overblown, especially when compared with the health risks of contracting malaria in tropical countries. It is one thing to ban a relatively safe substance as harmful in the relatively clean and non-lethal environments of cold northern climates, where such a ban was mostly silly but imposed some unnecessary costs on the economy. It is a human tragedy when you ban such a substance where the alternative is the resurgence of a dangerous and fatal disease like malaria.
[Goanet]RE: Curiosity et al ...a further response to Radhakrishnan Nair
Dear Mr. Radhakrishnan Nair, Forgive me if I ignore the needless personalised drivel in your otherwise quite interesting post. It is to the non-drivel that I will focus my attention. Here goes: JC 1: I strongly believe that it is wrong to attack without being attacked. That is why I have fundamental difficulty with India's unprovoked 1961 invasion of Goa. RKN 1: Do you have the same fundamental difficulty with the Portuguese invasion of Goa in the first place, Dr JC? JC 2: Dear RKN...my answer is YES! RKN 2: So you agree India was right in recapturing the territory from the Portuguese. Right, Dr JC? JC 3: Dear RKN,From the little reading I do, it is my understanding that one can only RECAPTURE what one had CAPTURED before ( or had possession of, before) JC 3b: Assuming we agree that the Republic of India invaded Goa in 1961, When exactly did the Republic of India have possession of Goa before 1961 ? Skirting of question noted.RKN's response to above respectfully awaited. -- JC 4 : WHY did the Republic of India have a Diplomatic presence in Goa until ~ 1955? RKN 4: The Indian mission was there to persuade the Portuguese to FOLLOW in the footsteps of the French and leave gracefully. JC 5: The French exited Pondicherry in November, 1954, but the the Indian Mission was withdrawn from Portugal on 11 June 1953. If the main purpose was to persuade the Portuguese to FOLLOW in the footsteps of the French and leave gracefully, It is strange that the Indian Mission in Portugal (the colonial power in Goa at the time) departed a good 17 months BEFORE the French left Pondicherry. How does one FOLLOW .BEFORE ? Hanh? Unless, one practises Revision. In any event, the question was WHY did the Republic of India have a Diplomatic presence in Goa until ~ 1955? -- RK 5: Now don't tell me that the Portuguese mission is Goa is trying to persuade India to return the territory to them! JC 5: I hope the Portuguese are not that daft. As it is we have thousands of non-Goan Indians who are faking (read as also bribing, forging) certificates and claiming that they were pre-1961 Portuguese Goans! Even Sardars! Yeah Right! And the ones who slip through real cracks, greasy palms and siesta heads apparently turn up in places like Frankfurt and London flashing their Portuguese passports demanding dis and dat - Making it virtually impossible - now - for genuine Goan applicants to claim for what is their right. From all indications - the Civil Service in Lisbon has all but given up. They apparently just do not know HOW to distinguish between Genuine Indian issued documents Fake ones. You think that Portugal (even in her wildest dreams) wants the headache of having to deal with Goa again ? Can you imagine the number of people who will turn up with claims that they are Goans? There won't be any need then - for those fake marriages that Indians are notorious forwould there? -- RK 6: There's a sense of deja vu in it, innit? We've gone thru it before, heard and seen it all. JC 7: That is fine. What however you appear not to have done inspite of having gone thru it before, heard and seen it all ..is learn't that JC and Bernado innit Colaco are NOT one and the same person. You have also not yet understood that the question is NOT the Fait Accompli re: Goa BUT whether in a democracy - Goans should have been afforded the courtesy of being asked what they wanted...and whether there was or wasn't a peaceful method of achieving Portugal's exit from the East. China did it with Macau and Hong Kong - did it not?. But then, China did not have the electoral pressures of 1962 (that India had), nor did they have a Menon in their ranks. yes, the same Jeep Scandal Menon that the Chinese set straight once and for all. good wishes as always jc Nehru in Bombay June 4, 1956! I want to make it perfectly clear that I have no desire to coerce Goa to join India against the wishes of the people of Goa... but the point is that we feel that Goa's individuality should remain and that whenever the time comes for any changes, internal or other, it will be for the people of Goa acting freely, to decide upon them. _ Dont just search. [Goanet]GoanetReader -- Guitars get going, Goan guild gleans go-getters
GUITARS GET GOING: GOAN GUILD GLEANS GO-GETTERS By Frederick Noronha http://www.dulpod.com IMAGINE a dozen or more guitars, each complimenting and competing with the other, to bring out the most melodious musical notes once a month in Porvorim or Panjim? This is no dreams; it's a unique venture has been taking place, thanks to the initiative of some music-crazy guitar enthusiasts in Goa who want to promote all brands of their favourite instrument in the state. Guitar Guild Goa is a rather low-profile, high-achieving voluntary network formed by guitar-music fans across the state. It has brought together many exponents of this flat-bodied melodious and popular Western stringed instrument with a long fretted neck. It is one of those networks that works out of Goa, plays an interesting role in promoting something positive, but probably doesn't get any of the deserved attention so badly needed to make a good venture grow. Over the last few years, not only has networked new-found friends with shared interests but it has also given a boost to guitar playing in this small state. More importantly, it has shown that it's possible for musician-led voluntary not-for-profit initiatives to function efficiently and effectively. Even if the occasional misunderstanding is always a possibility on the horizon. GGG was launched in March 2000. It got hardly any attention when it was launched. Much of the subsequent scant coverage in the local media was largely based on press notes, or write-up by suitably-impressed new members who happened to be also feature-writers or editors. Initially, team-leaders' reports about the second-Sunday of the month meetings were restricted to hardly three paras. Members had to be coaxed to perform. But this soon changed. The minutes became pages in length. Performers had to scramble for a slot. In no time, members were being told: Please get your individual guitars (standard tuning) and music stands if possible. Initially, most members were happy to have a platform for meeting, learning and performing. The Karnads from Vasco found the evening something to look forward to. (Sadhana Karnad is trained in Hindustani music, and not being a guitar player, at one meet, contributed with a soulful rendition of Hindi songs in semi-classical fashion.) Others called it the beginning of a musical journey together. Slowly numbers started growing. Antonio and Ligia Lobo's home at Altinho could no longer accomodate the crowd, and the venue was shifted to the large hall of music lover and music-store owner Albino Fernandes at Alto Betim. Today, the guild sees itself as being made up of various streams -- Western classical, pop and rock, jazz and rock, Indian classical and even Goan folk! Co-ordinators Rui Lobo and Devang Metha kept the group going in its early days. Commented Mehta then: It (the guitar) has been called the 'portable piano' because it is easily transported. The sounds of the nylon guitar epitomises the very concept of romance. On being formed, GGG's aim was to include informal playing, the presentation of 'topics of interest', just creating opportunities to meet people with similar interest, merely listen (you don't have to play). It was also aimed at playing duets or ensemble music or for members to try out a latest piece. The love of the guitar brings us together. And it is this love we want to share with more and more people in Goa, said organisers, early after the GGG's launch. They made it clear: anyone interested in the guitar, whether classical or other styles, and who attended any of the GGG's meeting automatically qualifies as a member. In the past, the guild had to put up with Goa's poor infrastructure. For its public performance, it found the available sound system to be woefully iandequate. This meant it had to hire a better sound system from out, and each performer had to pay to perform -- a sum of Rs 200! One member commented after the meet: We have learnt a lesson about getting sponsors to cover eyerything, sound system first and foremost. So we will not have performers pay to play (in future). After each meeting, members come out with their own 'newsletter'. Two young brothers -- Gary and Kirk Rodrigues -- have won wows for their talent. They've even played a duet blindfolded! At one meeting in the past, the youngest was Andrea Rodrigues (6), who sang 'Words', 'Let It Be Me' and 'Top of The World', to the accompaniment of her father, Emercio. Her clear intonation and perfect sense of rhythm left the listeners wonderstruck, commented guild member Joseph A. D'Souza. Arjun Karnad is another youngster who has been putting up interesting performances. Some of the GGG members are Goans based in Mumbai. A few are foreigners based in Goa. There are even some from other parts of India, based in Goa. Young Sanya Cotta, who has recently answered her Performer's Certificate for the violin, from the Trinity College of Music in London, is another one carving out a
[Goanet]Benny Hinn coming to Bangalore
Hi, I was reading with interest some posts on Benny Hinn, I think it's important we don't criticize other Christian sects or for that matter other religions just because they follow a line of thinking that is different from our Catholic faith or just because some of them too play along the same lines against the Catholics. That would only make us stoop to those levels. Also, some personal observations regarding Benny Hinn, whose TV episodes I sometimes see broadcast on TV. I have never personally seen him condemn any church or claim that the healing miracles performed at his prayer meetings are by his own personal powers, if someone has personally seen him do that, please enlighten me, I have seen him make it clear that it came from God. I have also been to our Catholic Charismatic movement retreat in Potta and at similar movements at Catholic churches here in Australia and never saw anyone there attribute any healings/miracles that took place to their own personal powers, it was rightly attributed to God. About anybody being foolish to preach the gospel in Saudi Arabia or otherwise, I wouldn't agree. The Christian movement is checquered with martyrs who were condemned to death for preaching the Gospel throughout Christian history which ensured its very survival, not everyone has a calling to be a martyr and preach the gospel though. I think preaching about ones religion is not an evil; forcibly converting people is what's condemnable. We can continue fighting on Catholic and Protestant lines and only spew hatred amongst us or spend that time constructively to reflect on what our Christianity really means to us and how we can live by the true spirit of our religion. It's important we be good examples of the Christianity that we cherish rather than just being name sake Christians. My best guess personally is that at the end of the day, for those of us who believe in God, no matter what our religious teachings tell us, we will all have our final judgment meted out by one God who will decide our destiny from how well we live our lives here on earth, Cheers, Sanjay Colaco

George, My comments are interspersed below. From: George Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] See this article on Benny Hinn http://www.geocities.com/mw_director/tbnwatch0301.html. If Benny Hinn is so convinced of his faith and miracle ability he should try preaching the Gospel in Saudi Arabia. |To be convinced that someone (Benny Hinn) is right is not the same as being brainwashed by him. Brainwashing takes place in a very rigid conditioning environment. I am no fan of his, but I've been to a Benny Hinn meeting and know that he does no brainwashing, he simply preaches with a lot of passion and what some might describe as theatrics. (I don't like that term, I prefer to call it what one fellow humourously described as pentecostal witchcraft). The meeting typically lasts about two hours, of which he may preach for no more than 40 minutes. Anybody attending the meeting is just about as anonymous as a fellow watching a football match: he is free to go home, get back to work and resume life as normal without getting placed on a mailing list, receiving follow-up phone calls or even being invited to subsequent meetings. So our South Indian friend was apparently convinced and chose to act on his beliefs. You might disagree with his choice and think it foolish, but I'd rather believe that he was passionate about his faith before Hinn came along. He was conducting Bible studies in his home, had Christian commentaries and sermons and, as you might expect, Benn Hinn videos. Evangelization in the face of opposition is nothing new, neither is it foolish. Most of the apostles and early Christians are said to have met with some of the most horrible deaths. This was the era of Domitian and Nero. It is precisely for this willingless to become martyrs for the spread of the Gospel that Christianity continues to grow after almost 2,000 years. If a Christian believes that Jesus is the Messiah and Saviour--and that there is no salvation outside of Him--then he is being more concerned about his fellow man than foolish when he chooses to evangelise. to have the direst consequences. Recently, a spate of deaths, mostly among young children whose parents chose to pray rather than seek medical attention for illnesses which were not particularly life-threatening in most cases, has made the news, and in at least one incident, one dead child's parents were charged with outright homicide for their neglect. There have been similar charges against many groups. Most of these are actually cults and have little contact with those outside of their church community. This is far from the norm.| That is my two cents worth. Very sincerely, Peter D'Souza
[Goanet]Benny Hinn a fraud, and Bangalore communally surcharged
A foreigner and a fraud like Benny Hinn has no business to propagate the western, militant, born again version of Christianity in India. This is harming the communal harmony which traditional christians from Kerala (and of course the oldest in India as also the world) over the past twenty centuries have carefully nurtured. Right wing Hindu fanatic organisations will derive political mileage out of this. This is not the sort of religious freedom which has been guaranteed in the Indian constitution. Mutual tolerance and respect is the corner stone of any religious teaching. not to bark at and denigrate other faiths.. george BENJAMIN NINAN [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Following is my presentation at symposium today (19 Jan.) in Bangalore. Bangalore is communally charged and tense presently because of the reckless build-up to Benny Hinn circus beginning on 21 Jan. Citizens are keeping their fingers crossed. Benny Hinn circus seems to have helped Hindus regroup and come together to fight the foreign cultural invasion, whether one likes it or not. BENNY HINN IS A FALSE PROPHET Benny Hinn is a false prophet and a ferocious wolf. The Holy Bible says, Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. The doctrines he preaches, his misquotations and misinterpretations of the Bible, his false prophecies, his alleged visions of angels and contact with the dead, and his emphasis on the prosperity of the Gospel and physical healings are controversial and exaggerated. Three centuries ago, he probably would have been burned as a heretic! The chief minister has said that every one has the right to preach his religion. But, what the CM has forgotten is that the right to profess, practise and propagate one's faith is given ONLY to the citizens of this country and NOT to a foreigner like Benny Hinn. The massive build up for Benny Hinn's Festival of Blessings, supported by vast sums of money from abroad, using expensive advertising techniques, claiming the participation of 30 lakh people in Bangalore has already created tension among the peace loving citizens. They justifiably apprehend violent eruptions in the City. I am filled with fears about the impending disaster the Festival will cause to communal peace and harmony in the City and elsewhere. I feel like a paralytic watching a rising flood. The portents are clear and you keep trying to alert everyone you can reach to the coming danger. Few listen. And none act in time. P.N.BENJAMIN

[Goanet]Film quality: See KISNA
To, 21 January,2005 Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, Panaji-Goa. Sir, For the IFFI the 4-screen multiplex INOX was created. The auspicious inauguration of IFFI was with a rope malkhamb ballet by Isha Sherwani, one of the two lead actresses in the film KISNA. The multiplex, the actress, the malkhamb and the film therefore should not be objectionable in the State Government corridors of power. I went with my family to see the very first show of KISNA at INOX with a view to show my children the beauty and the grace of the malkhamb. The entire film was so well done that anyone would be proud of the Indian traditions, karma and dharma depicted therein. It would be worthwhile if you and the Goa Government considered subsidizing the tickets for high school and higher secondary school students to view the film KISNA as done for 'Jaanta Raja'. We know that you love to instil patriotism in the new generation. Let not the words/admonition of her father to Laxmi[potrayed by Isha in Kisna] Muje laagta hai ki tere pyar mein dosh hai, itsha ka dosh.{ I feel that there is a shortcoming/ailment in your love, a shortcoming of desire.} ring true in the Government's love of patriotism. May be even the members of the Scrutiny Committee and the Producer of the infamous VCD entitled 'Goa Freedom Struggle' would benefit from viewing the film and noting how history can be depicted with sensitivity and how the tradition of protecting the weak flows from the Gita, even if it means antagonizing an elder brother. Minister of State for Tourism Renuka Chowdhary, who launched a public awareness campaign here Wednesday, predicted a multiple increase in tourist inflow into the country due to this attitudinal change. If all goes well, cheats who are known to fool foreign tourists, like the smooth-talking taxi driver, the guide reciting some made up story in the name of Indian history and their other enterprising compatriots will soon become history. The perception of what tourism means to a country has to undergo a sea change if India has to move from its current status (3.3 million foreign tourists in 2004) to the top 10 tourist destinations in the world, said Chowdhary. Atithi Devo Bhava (ADB) is a multi-faceted exercise that will involve sensitisation, screening, induction, training and orientation of key players in the tourism industry. The campaign will be implemented in a phased manner over a period of three years. The first phase will cover Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Goa and Aurangabad. By April 1 next year, 26,000 taxi drivers will be trained in the finer points of etiquette. Besides, the ADB certification will be given to taxis, hotels and shops for achieving standards and excellence. This certification will be valid for six months and will be renewed only after a fresh appraisal and re-orientation of the service provider. The ADB logo will be a status symbol. It will stand for quality and reliability. If a foreign tourist spots ADB logo on a taxi or restaurant, he can be sure that he is in the right place, said Chowdhary. Providing a macro picture of tourism's role in India's development, the tourism minister said: Tourism is an engine of development and change. It is the third largest foreign exchange earner of the country. It is one of the biggest employers; it employs more people than IT industry and agriculture. Through this programme, we plan to tap into inherent hospitality embedded in our collective psyche. Our goal is to make India the number one foreign destination, she added. People have to be sensitive and aware of the role of tourism; otherwise we will kill the goose that lays the golden egg. When tourism happens, prosperity increases, the upbeat minister said. [Goanet]Painting of churches
The Saligao parish newsletter 'Mothers Call/Maiecho Ulo' has the following note in its January 2005 issue QUOTE A vote of thanks: Due to the persistent efforts of our dear Dr Willie, the governemnt, thought its Tourism Department, took up the painting and electrification of the exterior of our Mae de Deus Church, which, by the way, is being projected everywhere as a tourists attraction. A big 'Thank You' to Dr Willie for his efforts towards this project as well as for the interest he takes towards the Church. A big 'Thank You' to our Hon Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, who, having heard his cabinet, gave his assent to the project. Mae de Deus Church, now, looks beautiful. So say we and the tourists who are seen flocking to the Church in great numbers. ENDQUOTE Should the state be spending taxpayers' money to paint religious monuments, even if in the name of tourism? Also, if the parishioners managed in the past, what has changed since? FN

[Goanet]New book -- Concepts in Law
Concepts in Law. Concepts in Law, a book advocating the understanding of the past behaviour, analysis of the present situation and a visualization of the future was released on the occasion of the Conference of Chief Justices of the World, held in Lucknow. The book is authored by Dr. Carmo D'Souza, Reader of Salgaocar College of law. The book received favourable comments from the participants of the Conference, which included Justices of Supreme Courts and Constitutional Tribunals from 54 countries of the World including the International Criminal Court of Justice. In the initial pages, the book contains a warning that the material can be used by fanatics negatively in order to foster their own vested interests thus bringing harm to the social fabric. It advocates the positive use of the material in attempting to understand the past, which includes ridiculous and sometimes harsh behaviours of the past resulting into oppressive legal regimes. A lot of material has been used from the sixteenth century Portuguese experiences in the State of India, for the fact that the author is familiar with the area and the Portuguese left well documented records. Such records enable one to perceive the mental psyche of those days. Also trials of animals and ordeals recorded in documents from various countries of the world have been presented for a student to grasp with the past. After stepping in the shoes of those generations, it is possible for researchers to perceive the conceptual errors and use it effetely in planning the future. Chapter VI titled as 'Twenty-First Century Mega Show?' presents the various ridiculous, unreasonable behaviour of the modern day. This chapter has been developed with the newspaper and mass media reports of the present day. The objective of the Chapter is to make the reader conscious of the trends of the past that are still continuing in our society and the new exploiting trends developing in the society. The last chapter deals with Concepts for a New World Order. The book advocates the creation in academic circles of a subject called World Constitutionalism, with elements of peace, respect to Human rights and world order by various oriental and occidental techniques. It also has a suggestion for the UN reform. The book contain six annexures with different approaches to World Order problems by different personalities or organizations of the world including (1) the movement of UN Reform 2007 of Dr. Klaus Schlitchtmann (2) Prof. Johan Galtun's Transcend: A philosophy of Peace and Development (3) a New Method of Neue Methode Group of Germany (4) Toward a New World Civilization of Jan Mortier of Civitatis International (5) Approach at City Montesorri School, Luckow and (6) The Menu for the Third Millennium of Otfried Schrot.

http://portal.telegraph.co.uk/global/main.jhtml?xml=/global/2005/01/21/wcall21.xml Racism from home shocks Britons working at call centre in India By Peter Foster in Pune (Filed: 21/01/2005) For eight hours a day Ian Hussey, 20, and Hasmita Patel, 21, from Bournemouth and Leicester respectively, make telephone calls to try to woo British Telecom customers to a rival operator. Sitting 6,000 miles away in the Indian city of Pune, 100 miles east of Bombay, they and 350 Indian colleagues place up to 30 cold calls per hour to all corners of Britain. Hasmita Patel Hasmita Patel has been shocked by the abuse For Mr Hussey, studying for a business administration degree at Sheffield Hallam University, it is valuable experience of one of the world's growth industries. However the experience has also provided a window into how abusive a surprising number of British people are when speaking from the privacy of their own homes. I can appreciate it's annoying being cold-called by someone trying to sell stuff, so I don't really mind being told to 'sod off', but it's another thing to get a mouthful of racist abuse, he said. I remember the first time it happened. I had just started. I introduced myself and the customer immediately demanded to know where I was calling from. I told him India and he just said 'F*** off you job-stealing Paki' and slammed the phone down. It left a really sour taste, to hear that from an Englishman. I was shaking with anger. When Mr Hussey's anger at his countryman had subsided, he turned to an Indian colleague to find out if it was rare to be on the receiving end of such abuse. He discovered that it was not. He just laughed and said it happens almost once a day. It gives a terrible impression of England. I didn't think it was like that. They [the Indian operators] just seem to accept it as if that's the way they expect English people to be. The prevalence of abusive and racist responses to the calls was made doubly hurtful since both Mr Hussey and Ms Patel said they had received nothing but welcome since arriving in India. The scheme is run by GTL, a large Indian company which expects to receive 10 British exchange programme students by the end of the year to work alongside Indian operators for the same pay and conditions. Pradeep Phadke, a GTL vice president, believes that it will bring mutual benefits providing his operators with daily contact with British people and customs and invaluable experience for the students. Both Mr Hussey and Ms Patel, who is studying International Business Management at the University of Central England in Birmingham, have found that they have much in common with their young Indian colleagues. Earning 8,00012,000 rupees per month (100150), a good wage in India, they enjoy spending freely on designer clothes, cinema tickets, bars and restaurants. Despite the daily abuse, the 350 tele-marketing agents at GTL give the impression of enjoying their work clapping enthusiastically every time someone records a sale. On the sales floor the operators divide into teams of 12 to compete for a quarterly prize of 50,000 rupees (600) for the top seller. They have facilities to make any British company envious, including a largely free canteen, gymnasium and table-tennis table. However for Leicester-born Ms Patel, whose Indian-origin mother and father come from Tanzania and Gujarat respectively, the fun and energy of Pune has been tempered by the angry voices from home. I've been shocked by the abuse I've had to put up with that everyone has to put up with. Sometimes I haven't even said hello before they're saying 'F*** off, I'm busy'. Racism is something Ms Patel says she has never experienced in her 21 years growing up in England, but the past two months have been a revelation. There was one girl who asked me to help her because she was having trouble with a call. I spoke to the woman and she said, 'but you're English, what are you doing there?' At the end I said someone would call her back to confirm the sale and she said, 'I want you'. I asked why, and she said 'because I want to speak to English only'. I bet she never guessed the colour of my skin. Ms Patel, who has worked in call centres in England, says she has been surprised at the apparently differing attitudes of English people when talking abroad. Where I worked in England, the call centres were full of Asians, but we never got racial abuse. For some reason now I'm calling from India, it's OK. They wouldn't dare say those things in public. It does make you wonder. The toughest thing, both Mr Hussey and Ms Patel agree, is that under the rules governing the calls, it is forbidden to reply to abusive customers except to say, sweetly, thank you for your time or Happy Christmas. However, not everyone can withstand the impulse to hit back. One female agent, after being subjected to a tirade of racial abuse, finally decided she had had enough and sought revenge. After

College Picnic at palolem. P---putting your best foot forward I--- Inculcating the Spirit of Game of Life and Joy C Cutting Ice through Grass N Negating the Sharp Turns on a Sloppy way and Rough Sea I Inclined To Bring Out the Best of the Rest C Catering To the Wild Dreams By Armstrong Vaz The scenic backdrop of the college surroundings was perfect blend for romantic bliss. New grown vegetation, wild shrubs and the hilly terrain home for the Cashew and mango fruit, a small hillock to take refuge, a diverse campus setting taking care of the varied looks of the youth at the height of their youth vigor. A fragrance of fresh flowers invited you for the strenuous or blissful day ahead of you in college as you disembark from the college city bus packed to its capacity with a khaki clad conductor ensuring that he got the best of returns from the fifty percent concession traveling students. His shirt smelling of the sweat on a hot sunny day and which needed an immediate wash The two banyan trees one which provided a perfect shade to the gurka or gate keeper from the blazing sun on hot sunny day. The other banyan tree provided a sitting place for students mostly girls to picture paint their teenage crush heroes from the institutions and plotting and planning their next maneuvers to profuse their liking for the dream hero of every reason and occasion. The end of the academic year was ringing in, the last days of the winter had just vanished and with it the chilly early morning dew. It was time for serious introspection in the next couple of weeks plunging one self deep into the hordes of books in tune with the examination time. The last dash of bash was waiting in the wings to unfold its magic, the magic of getting going for picnic. Cajetan- was puffing away his cigarette in style sitting on one of the wooden bench of the college canteen in utter disregard to the warningcigarette smoking is injurious to health-- and -- principals standing orders-- both which were prominent on the walls which had big cracks enough for the snakes to creep in and play havoc with the girl students. Slim and attractive enough to invite the stares of his girl students, Cajie carried his quota of two cigarettes along with from the city to tide over the cigarette famine in college. Cajie sat in a round table chat with his friends Geroge , Anacelto, Feliciano, Ivan, Allwyn and Joel discussing arrangements and things to be put in their place for the upcoming fun and frolic of picnic. The canteen was one place the bunkers could bank on. Plotting and planning was their domain the noisy gang was the nomenclature they earned and they lived by the sobriquet. They ruled the 200 meter long passage of the college with disdain and calmness of the cunning foxes which strayed into the college campus, a passage which they had made their own which led to the 25 odd class room and a quarter of the laboratory . A passage which made or broke academic careers on which side of the coin you brushed your head. Heads rolling on the football ground with the bells ringing in the corridors shuffling through the thick pages making way through the end of the tunnel- brightness or dullness. Attending lectures were not noisy gangs way of live- but cultivating the right contacts with a perfect blend was a cup full way of college life. John for history, Joseph for psychology, Vincent for English, Alice for mass communication, Sheila for Geography-- were all students tutors and good Samatarians. Principals have changed, the college premises have changed from a small goan style titled mangalore roof eight room house to the modern one storey building. A building which reflected the changing façade of education and a system a far cry from the early post liberation system where opportunities inthis state came far and few in between. Picnic was a time to run the hair down, pin one to the sand, and bring out the hidden talent, come out of the introvert shell, express and do things which the bubbling energy synthesizers had no chance to do in the corridors, canteen and on the wooden desk of the classroom. The Picninc planning revolved around the girtls without them anything would not move. The final word of favour forward came- spot, planning, day and transport. The building blocks were Sandra Sydney, sumita, Fiona, Maria, sheela and alice. Palolem haunted house of the figueredos played the perfect hostesses to the college picnic with white skinned tourists to the minimum . Minimum they were as the urbanization and hippie crazy of the 70s was yet to rotate into the late 90s. Briyani, Sandwiches, crockets, folk songs with Cajetan belting his fingers hapzardingly on the stringed guitar set the tone for the picnic mood. Unmindful of the din two Israelis with long black hair were smoking chillum on the huge black rock which stood out on the hillock. The strong smell of ganga- the relief

But even before his ashes have grown cold, his daughter, the wife of the prime suspect Ryan Fernandes, fears for the safety of her family and her children. Meeting her was impossible and access to the family was denied. She is reported to have told her mother and her close relatives, I made one mistake (marrying Ryan) and lost everything. (GT) SON-IN-LAW CONFESSES: The deputy inspector general of police, Mr Muktesh Chander, today (Jan 20) informed that Ryan Rudolf Fernandes, the son-in-law of Dr Vernekar, has confessed to doctor's murder. Mr Chander said that Fernandes got Dr Verenkar killed because the doctor had filed a case against him at the Vasco police station. When the culprits dragged the doctor into the van, he started shouting. And to shut his mouth, the culprits gagged the doctor. The physician breathed his lat within 2-3 minutes of gagging. (NT) THREE MORE ARRESTED: The Vasco police have arrested Francis D'Sa (42), a resident of Agassaim and Sachin Parab (30), Rajan Singh (25), both residents of Porvorim for allegedly murdering Dr Shrikant Verenkar on 17 January. Prime accused and son-in-law of Dr Verenkar, Ryan Fernandes, was arrested in Mumbai on 19 January. (GT) THE GOOD DOCTOR IS 'OUT': The sign on the door of the consulting room at the Damodar Hospital and Research Centre is a poignant reminder of Monday's tragedy. It simply says, The Doctor is out. From all accounts, Dr Verenkar was the sort of man that everybody loved to meet. He would tend to his patients with the kind of care that could only come from a man who loved his work. Almost everybody has some kind of fond memory of the good doctor. (GT) CROWD OUTSIDE VASCO COURT DISAPPOINTED: The murder of prominent Vasco-based doctor Shrikant Verenkar evoked such public outcry, that a large crowd - many of them curious onlookers - gathered outside the court premises right from 10 am on January 20, to have a glimpse of Ryan Fernandes, prime accused in the abduction and murder of his father-in-law Dr Verenkar. The crowd dispersed at about 11 am after the disappointed onlookers were informed that Fernandes was produced at the residence of the Vasco JMFC Vincent D'Silva, before being remanded to 14-day police custody. (H) LIFE AND TIMES OF RYAN: According to reliable sources, Ryan Fernandes, accused of kidnapping and murdering his father-in-law, led a flamboyant lifestyle. Anchor Marine Services, his company would offer services to seamen for processing Continuous Discharge Certificates (CDCs) for a hefty price, besides other shipping related services. Anchor Marine Services, which operated from the second floor of Durga Apartments, opposite Xavier Centre, Porvorim, ran aground and earned a bad name. (GT) SALDANHA SEEKS PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION TO BOOST TOURISM: The Tourism Minister, Mr Matanhy Saldanha, has stressed on the contribution by the private entrepreneurs for completing the government endeavour in improving the tourism sector. Mr Saldanha, who earlier released a booklet brought out by the Department of Tourism tiled Standard Cultural Guide of Goa, during a special function in the city, said that this group could help the government in its various projects like setting up museums in the rural areas. (NT) NO DECISION ON RIVER PRINCESS: While rumours are in circulation that a UK-based salvage company has been awarded the tender, Director of Tourism Elvis Gomes has categorically denied that any tenders have been awarded. However, investigations carried out by Herald have revealed that the Department of Tourism has started some preliminary work for the removal of the MV River Princess. Inquiries have revealed that the Department of Tourism has sent a notice to four shack owners (at Candolim), to shift their shacks from their existing sites in order 'to avoid any danger to the life of any visiting tourist beach goers and public in general as the area was needed for the removal of the grounded MV River Princess'. (H) BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP: Whether it is the Ramponkar, Magkar, Kantaikar, Pagelkar or Arrikar, the depleting stock of fish in Goan waters has the state's entire traditional community worried stiff. The amount of fish we net is becoming lesser by the day. In 1970 the catch used to be so bountiful, that we sold a cartful of mackerels for just Rs.10. Each cart would hold about 3000 mackerels, informs Caridade Mascarenhas from Morjim. Even the quality of the fish is pathetic. Nowadays we only get sardines, mackerels and rarely some prawns.
