Goa... Going... Gone! Real estate booms
Pushpa Iyengar
Thursday, March 01, 2007 20:42 IST

PANAJI: It could be an apartment on the beach or one with a river
view, an Indo-Portuguese bungalow or a 300-year-old villa — there are
takers for them all.

Mumbaikars discovered Goa in the nineties and bought rent back
accommodation for between Rs 10-15 lakh. But now buyers are coming
from further afield.

Roy Godinho from Ferns Real Estate confirms this: There's a rush from
the north, mainly Delhi. They come here for a month or less but they
want their own homes. For the upwardly mobile to feel they have
arrived, first it's a house in Delhi, then a farmhouse on the
outskirts to get away for the week-end, and finally a house in Goa,
says a builder.

They are looking for a trophy home, says a top executive with a
housing finance institution. And the prices range from Rs 25 lakh for
a 100 sq metre apartment in Candolim to Rs 1.5 crore for a bungalow or
a Portuguese villa.

Prices have been skyrocketing as a result, from Dona Paula, an
upmarket suburb of Panaji, to the coast of Palolem in the south and
Morjem in the north, which are all witnessing frentic construction.

Meera, a real estate broker in the US, moved to Dona Paula two years
ago and bought a quadruplex with a spectacular view of the Arabian
Sea. But her view is diminishing as buildings sprout all around.

Scanning the classifieds is very instructive. For example, in
Calangute a 650 sq metre plot plus a 300 square metre bungalow costs
Rs 75 lakh while a bungalow with two cottages, a swimming pool and a
garden in Anjuma costs Rs 3.25 crore.

Ribandar, Old Goa, Taleigao and Santa Cruz are also seeing a spurt in
prices due to their proximity to the capital.

It's not only buyers who are coming from Delhi but also builders. DLF
is planning to build a mall in Panaji's Patto area whereas Parsvnath
Builders and a clutch of other builders want to turn Goa's picturesque
locales into vast housing colonies with health clubs, tennis courts,
malls, hospitals, and schools - in short, complete townships.

A Goan builder can build 30-40 apartments, not 400-1000 with so many
facilities, points out Mathias of Mathias Constructions.

Starry, starry beaches

The richie rich, Page 3 types and film stars have found Goa
irresistible for a long time. For many Goa has spelt an alternative
lifestyle — more relaxed, more space and yet, as one architect puts
it, close enough to get the Mumbai buzz.

Many have traded their stressed out lives in Mumbai, New York, London
for a house in Tivim/ Penha da Franca/ Chorao Island/ Nerul and love
the freedom of wearing their Bermudas and working out of the house.

My base is Goa, says a Mumbaikar, who is with financial
instiututions. His retinue of servants and dogs live in his heritage
house while he jetsets on work but visits often to be seen on the
social scene.

Then there is the doctor whose calling card says he is a visiting
faculty at one of London's prominent teaching institutions. He lives
in Goa most of the time, his son goes to school here, but he travels
to London every few months on work.

Not only does he love the lifestyle here, his extended family come
here for holidays too. In fact, Anjuna has American, British,
Italians, Israelis and people of other nationalities living on its
beaches. Greg Acuna, who relocated from Los Angeles, and has since
written a book and is exploring setting up an animation studio says:
Goa has an international vibe, I love living here.

The Page 3 crowd is also buying property. Bina Ramani has developed
and sold five plots in Nerul, and among her buyers are fashion
designer Tarun Tahiliani. The other fashion designer with property in
Goa is Ritu Kumar. Then there's Good Earth (the alternative lifestyle
store) owner who also calls Goa home and so does a top executive of
Café Coffee Day.

Bollywood has long been seduced by Goa. Jackie Shroff discovered it
many years ago and has turned developer for his celeb friends. Stars
like Shahrukh Khan, Sushmita Sen and Pooja Bhat are the latest
entrants.

Nike just did it!

February 27, 2007

Finally, Nike has done it! With its latest ad exploding on television
screens in India, the world's top sports shoe company has done
something it has never done before -- a commercial on cricket.
...

Why a Konkani song? What you usually hear in ads is either North
Indian/Bollywood music or classical music. We wanted to show the fun
side of Indian music like in Konkani music. We have our own rock 'n'
roll history, you know. So the track is a reinvention of old Goan
music, says its composer Ram Sampath, 31, who has scored the music
for films Khakee, Let's Talk and numerous commercials.

[Goanet] KGTS does it once again - Ulhas Buyao spell bounds audience with his golden voice

KGTS does it once again
Ulhas Buyao spell bounds audience with his Golden
voice

 - by Joseph Fernandes.

The Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) mega
event is an annual feature in the calendar of Konkani
tiatrs and musicals. This year KGTS celebrates its
official fifth anniversary on March 22nd, 2007 and
this grand celebration culminated into its eagerly
awaited mega musical show “Konknni Machiechi Itihas”
(History of the Konkani Stage). The KGTS committee and
their galaxy of sparkling cream of talented
artistes/members leave no stone unturned to make every
year’s presentation a treasured and memorable one. The
hard work, efforts and sacrifices exerted by the
members is tremendous and every Goan applauds them for
their teamwork and dedication. Such groups as well as
the events are very rare in Kuwait and KGTS are
complimented for the lovely performances they put up
with the visiting senior musicians and artistes.
It was the versatile senior singer Ulhas Buyao who
mesmerized the audience in his own unique style of
singing. It may be recalled that he has taken Konkani
to new heights and still strongly struggles for
recognition of the Romi (Latin) script Konkani at par
with the official status given to the state language
of Goa. He performed in Kuwait for the first time.
The energy charged Ulhas Buyao kept the audience
spell bound to their seats when he performed some of
his memorable songs including the immortal ‘Chaneachea
Rati’ (Skylit Night) and “Deva Mhojea Deva” (Oh God,
My God). Many among the audience who heard his
enchanting songs on All India Radio - Panjim station
saw him perform live on stage for the very first time.
Personally, since childhood, I have listened to his
melodious and moral songs, and cherished them to-date
and it is due to the KGTS, my dream of witnessing
Ulhas Buyao perform live was fulfilled. People change
but their love for their motherland cannot be
hindered. His songs evoked the true spirit of love
that dwells in the true sons of the soil GOA. He was
honored on stage with a Memento and a shawl. Another
stalwart Seby F. whose songs like “Mira, Mira”
transport you to the land of true lovers! With a
voice as fresh as spring dew giving hope beyond hope
and a soothing balm to grieving hearts, Seby
electrified the audiences with a power packed
performance. Ago Cheddva was a refreshing journey to
1980s and Carnival left the audiences hungry for
more from this bubbly singer. Thanks to KGTS for the
noble cause of recognition for those tiatrists
(dramatists) and musicians back home in Goa, Mumbai or
Mangalore - who have contributed immensely to the
Tiatrists fraternity for decades. At this year’s
event, 12 reputed stage artistes and musicians were
flown specially from India to perform for the show,
courtesy of Victor Fernandes of Metro Express. KGTS is
the only organization that strives to create awareness
of the yesteryears artistes whose contribution to the
Konkani stage has not received recognition and
appreciation – even from the Goa government. The
entertainment filled evening saw real memorable
performances from all visiting artistes. Their
impeccable style and flawless dialogue delivery were
left the audience spellbound to the end. The King of
Centuries Roseferns who has penned, directed and
staged more than 50 non-stop dramas, Tragedy King
Mario Menezes, Rosy Alvares and Comedians Joana, Ambe,
Sally and John D’Silva with Sidhanath Buyao put up a
great show. Rosy Alvares' performance as a child
suffering from Down syndrome was mind blowing and
commendable. Since school days, I saw Rosy Alvares
perform in school dramas at Monte de Guirim. She has
truly matured in the art of acting and has conquered
all contours of character acting. Given any role, she
can mould well and deliver the desired act with her
bold performance. Two outstanding musicians Babush
Fernandes and Filipe de Sanvordem among the visiting
artistes were honored at the glittering event and
instated as the beneficiaries of KGTS Mega Show 2007
receiving Memento, shawl and cash award for their
glorious contribution towards the art of the tiatr.
Yesteryears’ stars of the Konkani stage Aninha Dias
(Anita), Patrick de Verna, Antonette Mendes, Ophelia
Cabral and Remmie Colaco were the KGTS beneficiaries
for the year 2006. KGTS also sponsored publishing a
Konkani book “Konknni Oparincho Jhelo”

One more note before my exit -

The question about the bhaile invasion is a serious one,
deserving of a free and open discussion among Goenkars.
The scale, composition repercussions of the new bhailes
(at both ends of the economic scale) pouring into Goa
versus that of the bhailes who came, say, 20-30 years
ago, is a legitimate topic for deliberation observation,
not to mention interesting from a sociological p.o.v. But
it would be impossible to inaugurate and sustain such a
discussion on Goanet since the self-righteous Frederick
Noronhas on this list would pounce on you and -

(a) deny that bhailes are coming in at all, citing a 'study'
from some godforsaken institute nobody has heard of
conducted by a 'noted expert' nobody gives a shit about.

(b) deny that Goa can be overrun by the sheer mass
of humanity that surrounds it (effectively Goa's death
warrant was signed in 1961 - and no, I am not a Portuguese
sympathiser) and dismiss it as Catholic paranoia fueled
by Manohar Parrikar through his proxy Rajan P. This
hole can be plugged easily if only one learnt to count
and took a look at Goa on a map of India.

(c) climb the high horse and call me anti-Indian and
xenophobic. This is a v good strategy since it instantly
confers on him the status of hero among his non-Goan
friends, brown white, and marks him out at once as
a man of balance, wisdom and a deep insight into the
complexities of the human condition.

Warm regards,

Andre,

When highly qualified IITian Manohar Parrikar becomes Chief Minister of Goa
in May, he will revamp the high school education system in Goa to be the
best in the nation and we Goan IITians will start IIT Entrance Exam coaching
classes all over Goa. Then Goan students will get into IIT en masse - ie a
large number will attempt IIT Entrance Exam and get thru the JEE - and those
that do not succeed will still get into the other engineering colleges. All
these students will get lucrative scholarships to do post graduate study in
America, and the unfortunate ones who dont get scholarships to study in
American colleges will go to Europe. Sure Goan IIT Graduates or Graduates of
other engineering colleges will have a world of a opportunity in Goa, in
India or abroad. This will surely open the minds of all Goans - They need to
start now with a vote for Manohar Parrikar for Chief Minister and we will
all attain GOA DOURADA (Golden Goa) !

Best Regards,

Dr. Carmo D'Cruz,
Goan, IITian
ex Velim in South Goa,

Hi.

I've read your messages on Goanet with some amazement.

I don't understand your focus on Get more Goans into the elite IITs helps
anything. If more Goans get into the IITs, well and good. But surely only a
very small fraction of those that try will.

Unless you're making the point that opening the minds of Goan students to
the possibilities that lie outside Goa is what is desirable, but I don't
think you've made that explicit anywhere.

I do agree with the Goans in Goa, that being away from Goa, one cannot

without Basic education a person is nothing. However in my opinion,
education should not be confined only in the four walls of the classroom.
Your comments: and if falto people cannot understand what falto is then

Children, grand children and adopted children, you better look after your aged
parents or else
you could land in jail..

The Bill (The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents..2006) is approved by the
Union cabinate and
introuduced in the Parliament in its budget session (started from 22nd
Feb.2007).

Under the provisions of the bill, a person who was responsible for the upkeep
of parents
failed to take care of them, can attract punitive measures like three months
imprisonment and
a fine .

Besides, it also provides for option to revoke the will.

The bill also enables parents to reverse any transfer of property that may have
been done to
children..

Under the provisions of the bill anyone could suo motu complain to tribunals
seeking relief
for the senior citizens.

When it comes to looking after their parents, it seems, for some children there
is no fear of
the God at all. Hope, things would definetely change now at least for the fear

Navy chopper crash-lands in sea near Gateway

Express News Service

Mumbai, February 28: An Indian Navy Sea King helicopter on Wednesday evening
crash-landed in the sea off the Sundar Nagari area of South Mumbai, near the
Gateway of India and close to the Naval airbase INS Kunjali. The four-member
crew survived. It's suspected that **engine failure** led to the incident.
Fortunately, the chopper landed in shallow waters, allowing the crew to swim
out. Efforts to pull the helicopter out were on till late evening. Defence
spokesperson Captain Abhay Lambate told reporters: There were two pilots
and two air crew in the helicopter. They were not injured as the helicopter
crash-landed in water while **they were trying to force-land it at the naval
air base**. It's too premature to say what cause the incident. The Navy will
inquire into the matter. The Navy personnel aboard the helicopter were on a
routine** training flight**. Some residents of Sundar Nagari saw the
helicopter landing in the sea around 5.30 pm and called up The Indian
Express within minutes of the incident. A crane was called around 7 pm to
pull the helicopter out of the sea, said Lambate. By 9 pm, almost two-thirds
of the helicopter was out of the water. Defence officials refused to comment
on the condition of the helicopter, saying that they would have to first
thoroughly examine it. Soon after the incident, police cordoned off the
area. http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=224574

All reports state that the crash occurred while the chopper was trying to
land on/at INS Kunjali the name of the naval air station. This led one
report to say that the chopper was trying to land on a war ship! Maybe some
of the reports of naval plane crashes at sea off Goa may be mixed up with
INS Hansa the naval name of Dabolim airport. The other point is that
training flights seem to take place everywhere -- Dabolim, Colaba, etc etc.
Maybe its something which is done when there is nothing else to do. In
short, TP.

Now if the same program could somehow forecast the Manohar Parrikar win in
the Goa May 2007 elections, the D'Cruz sofware would be as widely
distributed in Goan schools as the infamous Parrikar VCD

Rajan Parrikar wrote thus about Fred Noronha:

[FN]wrote that intellectually dishonest screed in EPW on the VCD for which
I issued a rebuttal on scig (and didn't hear a peep from you about it).

=== jc's response ===

re: the Roland Francis post:

I hope that, some day, we will resolve not to involve children in our

Just because K3 behaves in the sad way he does, does not mean that we have
to join him by behaving like him.

That infamous VCD is another reason that Goans may wish to pause and think.
What was the purpose behind that VCD? Why was such a bogus and communally
spun VCD produced and distributed in the schools? Do Goans wish to return to
the VCD days? Perhaps, they do.

Then again, what choices (read Goveian choices) do Goans have?
===
re: the Rajan Parrikar post:

I'd say that it is unfair to GoaNet readers that Rajan is slamming Fred on
GoaNet about something that was posted somewhere else (SCIG).

I suggest that those FN views and the rebuttal from Rajan be posted on
GoaNet. Let others be the judge. May be Fred was intellectually dishonest.
May be Rajan is being unfair to Fred. May be, both have valid points. May be
...not.

From my point of view, I personally find the 'mirsangh' in the spat these
two are having quite puzzling. After all, Fred is a regular down to earth
and hard working journo with tremendous daily output, and Rajan's photo
essays are crucial to Goan awareness of what is happening to their homeland.

It is possible that both have their minuses (like surely, all of us do) but
on the balance of probabilities it is my opinion that both have a lot
positive to offer. Something which is being obscured with this Ambott-Tikk
in public.

Never mind the 'pretence of having honest difference or public airing of
opinions - so crucial in a vibrant democracyetc etc
just my view

Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony – Goa

TOWARDS PEACE WITH JUSTICE -- One year after the Sanvordem-Curchorem
communal violence

3rd March, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at T.B. Cunha Hall, Panjim

3rd and 4th March 2006 are days that we would probably prefer to forget.
But can history be erased? Alternatively, should history become a cause
of conflict? Or should we work at what it means to recall history with a
view to constructing a just and secular future?

One year after the riots, the Muslim community in the area continues to
live in fear and anxiety, afraid that at any time any day they can once
again be attacked and left in the lurch. Can we let this continue? Can
we continue to say that all Indians are our brothers and sisters with
our heads held high?

What has been the role of the State in all this? What would it take to
ensure that all, specially the minority communities and the marginalised
sections of society are included amongst us as our equal brothers and
sisters? How do we ensure that all citizens can live in peace and
security?

To not only talk of peace but to ground it in reality -- rather than
talking of an illusory peace -- is the challenge before us. Goa also
needs to be protected in the future against communal ideologies and
processes. For this we need to get to the root of the current problems,
and pledge ourselves to work towards a better

So come, sing a song of secularism, and share your thoughts with
like-minded people. Together we can make a difference and bring about
peace with justice.

Come and be part of the peace-with-justice meeting organised by
Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony on 3rd March, 2007 from 4
p.m. to 6 p.m. at T.B.Cunha Hall, Panjim

 Dear Frederick,

It annoys you that someone like me can support Parrikar
because it intrudes on the narrative you have constructed
and seek to propagandize: that all Parrikar supporters are
saffronistas, RSS fundamentalists, intolerant bigots, fascists,
and accomplices in murder. Sorry pal, that won't wash.

That doesn't seem to be what FN has been saying. Obviously, a lot of
Parrikar supporters are genuinely good people who have the interests of
India, Goa and the masses at heart, just as there are many Rane
supporters and Willy supporters and Arlekar supporters and so on
(probably even Babush supporters :-) who ditto.

On the other hand, if FN is saying that RSS people (of whom Parrikar is
one) are fundamentalists, intolerant bigots, fascists and accomplices in
murder, that is absolutely spot on. These are the people who refer to
the assassination of Gandhi (carried out by them and at their behest) as
Gandhi vadh (vadh is when you kill a demon) rather than Gandhi hatya
(meaning murder, employed when you kill a human being); these same
people have carried on in this vein throughout, with peaks ascended at
the time of the Babri Masjid demolition (wasn't Parrikar a karsevak,
which in this case translates as vandaliser of historical monuments and
spreader of communal hatred) and the Gujarat pogrom. These are the
people who are currently celebrating the birth centenary of Guru
Golwalkar, who openly admired Hitler and the final solution and
recommended that it be emulated in India. He went on to say that
minorities in India should accept the superiority of the Hindu religion,
or live in this country as second-class citizens, with not even basic
rights.

Au contraire, the biggest intolerants are fellows
like you, who brook no dissent, who stomach no difference
in viewpoints other than the ones circulating in your
own cocoon of the oh-so-liberal pretenders. Those
not hewing to your line are quickly slapped on with
readymade labels (RSS, Hindutva, saffronistas etc).

Well, this is a new one on me, FN is intolerant! In many mailgroups he
moderates he is always at pains to ensure that viewpoints opposing his
are carried.

And as for your other rants:

The politically-correct hooey issuing from you is no
doubt calculated to impress your non-Goan Hindu friends,
to reveal that behind those udders overflowing with the
milk of magnanimity lies a Renaissance man whom
all the paranoid Catholics would do well to heed.

Who's engaging in labelling and name-calling? Dressing it up in fancy
language doesn't make it any prettier. And then to say that FN does
exactly this is a little thick. Refrain from doing it yourself and then
accuse others.

I may have made a determination that currently Manohar
Parrikar is the better of all available political options (others
may have arrived at a different conclusion based on their
own views and experiences, which is their basic right
 in a democratic system).

But, of course, nobody has questioned your right in this regard. They
are merely questioning whether you are right in this regard :-) So
there's no need to get uptight. We can have political differences at the
level of whom/what party to vote for, without all this name calling. If
you do have any concrete examples of FN engaging in labelling, name
calling and abuse on internet forums, please let me know, I can add the
stuff to the dossier I am building up on the man :-)

 Mine is a provisional reckoning.
I am not a BJP party man, never was, and I retain the right
to change my view about Manohar P. should I deem it
 necessary.

That's what's great about democracy. Of course you have a right to
support Manohar Parrikar or whomsoever you want, and you have a right to
change that view whenever you want, as do all of us. Let's say amen to
that!

Hi Gilbert,

You make some thoughtful and valid points. It is crucial to have a
formidable foundation in English education right from inception, so that our
youth have an even platform (level-playing field) to learn, compete and ride
the wave of prosperity. Essentially, empowerment through education will
enhance economic and social standards that contribute towards building a
strong and successful society.

Although, you are probably aware of what follows, I will write this for the
sake of others who may not know.

You are absolutely right. Learning must begin at pre-primary level. The
child’s brain is ready for information intake at birth or even before, while
thought process (reasoning and logic) might begin later. Nevertheless,
learning begins long before school does. It is therefore essential that
parent-child (or human) interaction is prevalent in some form to enable the
child’s growth mentally; physically and to keep the child healthy.

The key factor is “human interaction” —and child care providers, should
focus on the child’s growth, learning, development and the environment – all
of which are conducive to a child’s optimum advancement.

Unfortunately, this does not happen in most under-developed or developing
countries, because of poverty or impoverished conditions, where the need to
earn a livelihood becomes more pressing than the need to fully focus on the
child. This is increasingly true of a single parent trying to balance life
between caring for the child and earning a living.

As you know, in years yonder, a majority of Goans in Goa had to leave
children at home to work in paddy fields or do other manual labor. The
privileged, (few exceptions,) were in the minority. Add to this the low
literacy levels amongst these hardworking people, which further exacerbated
the problem.

Since knowledge is traditionally transferred from parent to child, —the
illiterate (and semiliterate) were significantly disadvantaged and
marginalized. This situation worsened when children had to work alongside
parents in fields just to make ends meet, leaving no prospects for
schooling.

In the worse case scenario, the rich exploited the poor – and often the
Bhatcar (landlord) had the Mundkar (tenant) and including his children work
for him i.e. tilling the bhatcar’s land and doing menial jobs -- for almost
free. This exploitation was more pronounced in south Goa than the north,
I’d believe.

The shackles of bondage were broken, basically when Goans began to work on
ships; some found employment in the Gulf; some emigrated, others got
employed in neighboring states (not necessarily in that order). It is
noteworthy, that those that left Goa did not want to come back; the only
idea of returning was for a vacation. Tourism then was a trickle.

It is heartening to note that gradually the tide began to turn and foreign
remittances began to flow into Goa, mainly from the Gulf and those working
on ships, and things began to change for the better. Goa’s economy began to
grow and swell to the extent that Goa is now considered the richest state in
India (per the wikipedia) and boasts a robust and growing economy.

Now, we see literacy levels rising in Goa, and things are changing (albeit
slowly) on the education front; God willing we will get there. Some got out
of that “stranglehold” and have excelled, others had the opportunity to
leave the shores of Goa and prosper -- mainly because of favorable
circumstances and/or opportunities that crossed their paths.

Primarily, school performance in Goa is closely tied to language, as in
other parts of the country. Currently, there is a visible and wide “gap”
between the language of instruction and spoken language in Goa, which often
inhibits learning and leads to apathy within the child toward school work.

The medium of instruction Konkani, which is taught in schools, is not the
same Konkani as spoken in a majority of the homes, in Goa. The Devanagari
script used in schools to teach Konkani, is hardly used outside of the
school environment; even the Bible written in Konkani is in Roman script.
So, you can imagine the chaos and confusion.

In the present situation, we do not have a solid basis for education either
in English or Konkani, and the current education delivery system seriously
needs changing to English medium. Additionally, there is an acute
disparity in the

BBC World in 'Take Off' mode with new show
  Indiantelevision.com Team
 (1 March 2007 10:30 pm)
MUMBAI: Close on the heels of launching an India specific campaign 'What
Affects the World, Affects You', BBC World announced the start of its 6-part
mini series Take Off, on the aviation industry in India, with a panel
discussion on the booming sector.
The mini series will be aired on BBC World every Tuesday at 9 pm, and will
talk to leading industry experts, asking them about the recent developments
and exploring and analysing the future of this sector. With six repeats
planned across weekdays and weekends the show is a key feature of the
channel's March programming.
Region specific programming such as the sector stories on India is
undertaken by the channel only in a few countries. BBC World is aggressively
looking at the Indian market where it has to compete with both national news
channels as well as international news channel CNN.
Speaking about the mini series, BBC World head of MarCom Vaishali Sharma
said, The mini series to be aired on our global network takes a look at the
Indian aviation sector through the years. Our correspondent Karishma Vaswani
had covered the 'Aeroshow' at Yelahanka and the excitement that has been
generated over this sector in the past few years made it ideal to showcase
this sector. The aviation industry has witnessed phenomenal growth in the
last few years. With Take Off, BBC World will showcase the opportunities and
achievements created by the Indian boom in the aviation sector, plus the
threats.
As part of the promotional activity, the channel also had a brief panel
discussion on the budget and growth of the aviation segment with Go Air
managing director Jeh Wadia and Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (Capa) CEO
Kapil Kaul, along with minister for civil aviation Praful Patel, who joined
in via video conferencing.
The mini series, which was commissioned to Miditec, starts at the cusp of
the 'Aero Show' at Yelahanka in Bangalore and traces the journey of Indian
aviation through the decades. The first episode takes an overview of the
industry and the various issues that surround it. The subsequent issues will
probe deeper into the problems faced by low cost airlines, government
apathy, infrastructure problems, airline personnel as well as the rise of
the budget airlines and privatisation.
Speaking about the advertising for the show, BBC World ad sales head Seema
Mohapatra mentions that while the aviation sector itself could not advertise
on the show, there had been great response from other advertisers. The
aviation sector spins off so many other areas like tourism and domestic
travel for business that we are bound to see advertisers in those areas as
well.
The promotions for the show include a multimedia marketing campaign with BBC
leveraging its radio connection. Sharma said, We are looking at radio very
actively and will use FM stations like Radio One and Radio City. The show
will also be promoted through print, outdoor and online media.

The song in the Nike ad sounds like a Konkani song. Is

I would be interested in knowing on what grounds you decide on whom to
fight tooth and nail and why the Italians, Portuguese, Japanese, or
Chinese (even if via Macau) might be preferable to Bharats to use
your label Man, if by some chance India comes to play a growing

I wonder how Hotel Mangalore is doing. As you could gauge, in this
sea of chauvinism, I have a sneaking respect for these so-called non
 Goans.

Dear Frederick,

What's this bit about the so-called non-Goans? The distinction
between Goan and non-Goan is not as fuzzy as you imagine.
For instance, my friend Neeraj Shukla is a Goan and I can easily
tell him apart from a non-Goan. Furthermore, one can be
both a Goan and an Indian simultaneously since one is a
subset of the other. But not all Indians are Goans. You can
verify this for yourself by constructing a Venn diagram:-).

I think you have the wrong end of the stick. The nub is not that
non-Goans cannot, do not, contribute to Goa. The real issue is
whether Goa can sustain its quality of life, its physical beauty, and
its spirit, given the uncalibrated influx of the bhaile, brown and
white, these days (in addition to all the other ongoing horrors
such as the ODP, RP2011, rampant construction, damage to the
environment etc). Goans are rightly alarmed and this is not
necessarily chauvinism or paranoia as you periodically suggest.

Goans have traditionally been welcoming and we do not have to
shrink our hearts and minds now. But we should not be blind to
the problem either, one that potentially affects everyone, from
longtime Goans to bhaile who have settled here for a while.
Recognising a problem clearly is the first step towards solving it.

Let me here dwell on the new bhaile from the upper end of the
economic scale. If these recent incoming were all Sanjeev
Trivedis and Heta Pandits it would have been cause for
celebration, for a Sanjeev Trivedi and a Heta Pandit giveth
to society much more than they taketh. They are assets
and a positive force to any community they may choose
to settle into. It is not these type of remarkable individuals
who have chosen Goa for their home that is our concern.

Instead, let's be more discriminating and recognise that the
Trivedis and the Pandits are rarities, that the bulk of the
nouveau riche - Mirchandanis, Modis, Grovers and Sharmas -
flocking to Goa are here only for the ocean view, or are
running away from the urban bathrooms their own cities
elsewhere in India have turned into, or simply want a vacation
outpost to invest into. The Brits and the Germans are
here for the sun sand, cheap food and cheap rents, a deal
not possible for these (mostly) blue-collared whites in
Europe itself. Goa to them is a playground and once
it loses its shine they will seek a playground elsewhere.

Recall the bhaile of 30 years ago - mostly civil servants,
teachers, professors, doctors etc. We played with their
children and despite their different language, surnames and
food habits we could identify with them without difficulty.
In essence they lived among us and more or less like us.
Contrast that with the character composition of the bhailes
today, parachuting straight into an 80 lakhs apartment or a
villa in Dona Paula (or a house in Parra). The very next day
he zips around town in a Honda, books his children into
Sharda Mandir (through 'influence' no doubt from some other
bhailo) while his wife takes a facial at the Marriott, and has
no real desire (or capacity), to fraternize with the ordinary Goan
or contribute to local life in any significant way. This abrupt
social re-vectoring doesn't come without its own set of
undesirable consequences. (FN will blithely pronounce this
as capitalism and think he has made a devastatingly
insightful remark).

Goa does not have a limitless capacity to absorb everyone
who loves Goa and wants to come here (if love of a place
were the sole criterion for admittance, 95% of humanity
would make a dash for the USofA today). It is supremely
easy to love Goa if you are stuck in any of the noxious
hellholes that are Indian cities. If this trend continues
unabated Goa will not remain the oasis it is. It is well
to recall India's spectacular record of rapidly turning perfectly
habitable places into stinking quagmires (think Pune, Bangalore,
and a host of other bathroomised towns in urban India).

I have been a bhailo myself, having lived for almost 2 decades
in America, and I well understand the issues that confront the
outsider. I have also seen from close range the shocks
administered to the system through indiscriminate immigration
and the consequent

Joe,

In breaking with my two-posts per thread tradition, I'm back. To afford you
another opportunity to explicitly point out what it is I said that lead you
to make a string of inferences about things I did not say.

But please don't raise your hopes - that people
will take your sagacious advice seriously, based
on your educational experiences in North America.

Get this: If Goans were Eskimos, they would be
living in igloos. ;) [Nothing against Eskimos,
but don't expect people in Goa to live a lifestyle
 of the West.]

RESPONSE: Get real! What kind of lifestyle are the people living now? What
kind of language are you propagating they use as the medium of instruction
in schools ? Hinglish? What kind of movies do people watch ? How are food
consumption habits and dining patterns changing? What kind of clothes are
the youth wearing these days ? What tools are students using while
researching on the the internet ? Are youth going to internet cafes for
research? Nevermind what Tony Martin said about porn. Do kids in Goa own a
Playstation or an X-Box among other gizmos? What is all this - not a
knock-off lifestyle of the west?? Do you really go to Goa, like you claimed
in an earlier post?

Interestingly, you make some perplexing points,
 based on borrowed advice (hearsay).

If Goa's education system is as robust as you
(and your western proponents) say, why don't
you consider sending your children to Goa for a
 primary or higher education?

RESPONSE: That's a cop-out! Are you really interested in a serious
discussion on Education in Goa? I honestly cannot say that my kids
are in a better school than any in Goa. Provincial results on standardized
tests were announced yesterday for Grades 3 and 6. Not exactly something to
crow about for many schools.

This will help test your professed theory:
that alls well with the education system in Goa.

RESPONSE: Would you please point out when I stated the above? When did I say
that alls well with the education system in Goa?

Now, you are saying that since North America is experiencing high dropout
rates, makes it okay for Goa to have phenomenal school dropouts?

RESPONSE: I did not espouse the above. But you are welcome to twist what I
said.

BTW- in the US there are cases where students carry guns and shoot fellow
students; so using your above analogy, what advice would you dispense to
 students in Goa?

RESPONSE: School shootings in US / Canadian schools is not an everyday
phenomenon. I have no advice for the students in Goa. What I have is advice
for people like you who have their heads buried in the sand. Besides
violence in schools in Goa (which already exists at different levels - no
guns involved yet) there are/will be more 'improper' activities ongoing or
ocurring in schools - remember the case of the kids in the Delhi school and
the magical cellphone camera and other such vices. All imported from the
west? I suppose no bullying goes on in schools in Goa. Still wearing your
blinders? Check out how some youth are spending their Sunday afternoons at
the internet cafes - you may classify that as indulging in entertainment of
the west! Well, couch-potato kids in the west end-up leading unhealthy lives
(physically).

But your position is that nothing is wrong with Goa's education system.

RESPONSE: Again, you choose to misquote me. That's your prerogative. I
clearly stated There is plenty wrong with primary education systems the
world over. Goa is no exception.

Will the North American and UK settled Goans not
allow those in Goa the privilege to decide what
 is best in their interest?

RESPONSE: Another cop-out! There is no need to get defensive. While you may
have the aptitude, you lack the ability to DECIDE anything about Education
policy in Goa. The only ability you have is to decide which school your
child attends. The last government withdrew funding for several schools and
there was barely a wimper.

BTW- Bosco, don't you think that I have the right
to project my views based on my first hand experience
 in Goa, considering that:

RESPONSE: Never mind your rights, which you are unable to exercise. You
belie your own purported altruistic intentions by choosing to repeatedly
eschew answering a simple question I asked you ? Are you really interested
in discussing Education in Goa or grandstanding?

ABVP condemns Goa University

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP),workers demonstrated today in
front of Kala Academy at Panaji, against conferring D`Lit degree to
Prof.Anibal Cavaco Silva, the President Of Portugal.

It is a shame on the part of Goa University to confer the d`Lit on
Head Of a nation, which ruled over Goa for 450 years and under the
rule, many innocent people were denied to the citizens.

This deed of Goa University is an insult to all the freedom fighters
who gave their lives and blood during the freedom struggle.

University authorities did not have guts to put up the proposal before
the Academic Council and the decision was taken by circulating a note
before the Executive Council. This shows that the University has
succumbed to the political pressure.

There were many eminent Goans, upon whom this degree would have been
conferred.Goa University has started a wrong tradition by conferring
such a degree on a foreigner.

ABVP condemns this decision of Goa University and resolves to continue
the protest hereafter.

We suspect an attempt of some lusophiles to celebrate Fifth Centenary
of the aggression of Poruguese on India in the year 2010.ABVP cannot
pardon such lusophiles as the Portuguese rule for 450 years meant
forced proselitisation, inquisition and suspension of civil liberties.

I haven't read Cecil's column, but going by what Selma
has said it is improper to malign the Gulf Goan or,
for that matter, anyone working in the Gulf. Like many
communities such as Sri Lankan, Phillipons, Russians,
British, they all work here for a reason -- economic
fulfillment.
Same is the case with Indians and Goans in Canada.
Many work there in low-paying jobs and many gave up
good jobs in India to settle in their new adopted
land.
I know of cases where a Phillipino who did nothing in
Goa is now earning dirhams 1500 as a maid in a very
good house as I know the family -- an Egyptian bank
executie and an Englishman husband and no children.
They have given her a separate room with TV and also a
mobile. She does not cook. Besides there is a gardener
and a driver.
I can say the maid is doing well when one considers
that many graduates working in offices earning between
2500 to 3500 dirhams. At least half that salary goes
for rooming, food and travel (unless company provides
transport).
Now this employer is looking for a new maid because
the maid complained that the driver touched her. The
driver said the maid came sat close to him. The
employer also wants a new driver.
She says she cannot handle such things. She would
prefer a husband-wife team.
Nowadays lot of graduates are in the Middle East. Lot
of journalists from Goa who have come for better
salaries. So what's wrong with that?
Was the tarvotti a much-maligned person? Now many
young goans want to go on cruise ships so that they
can earn lot of money. I have said before that unless
Goa has an employment policy for the new graduates and
also for those who have not much of education, the
beeline for Goa will continue.
I met diplomats in Canada who have settled there after
retirement. I asked one why and he was struggling for
an answe.
Let's not deride those who left Goa. I don't know
whether to praise those who have stayed in Goa or not.

Dear Rajan,

I've been scouring for your posts on Goanet with a

The forays into Frederick's ego are amusing since the

were no better than the Salazarists in Goa, or the Right Wing Christian
bigots in the West. I thought to myself .If I would not even spend one
second of my time to support the Righties that the Goveians support, or the
merciless Thatcherites why would I support these 'neo-incarnations with
gloss' of those very people who spread hate in this world. It would be akin
to supporting the Catholic IRA or the Protestant UDV or the Mugabes,
Pinochets, Castros, Sadaams or os senhores 'Jorges ani Deeks' of this world.

I turned down the invitation of my friend Aires Rodrigues.

He returned to Goa.canvassed heavily for the BJP and the rest is
history.

Even so, I thought Isn't it better to have Parrikar there than Churchill
Alemao ? and I thought ...It is.

I was very disappointed by his 'compromise of principles' when he made
allowances convenient enough to capture the chair. He made deals with the
very same crooks who are presently presenting you with the opportunity to
use your delightful digital camera.

Then came the totally despicable VCD.

I believe that Goans today are faced with three choices ... (1) a Rock (2)
A Hard Place and (3) a third choice that Fred Noronha is threatening to come
up with ...but hasn't.

I will submit that IF you have not seen the despicable VCD . you are
opining about the BJP without having complete background info.

I would have accepted it IF you had seen the despicable VCD and then come
to the same conclusion you now are at.

About the tone of your discussion with Fred Noronha, I'd say this . It
is discouraging that two (out of many) Goan individuals who can be of such
usefulness to the future of Goa are having such a 'picante' discussion
at such base levels.

As my good e-friend Prof Ranjan Sardessai (from Margao and Texas) often
says ... We Goans should not think of ourselves as Hindus or Christians (or
others ... as FN says he thinks like), we should think of ourselves as
Goans.

If not those who are not Goans will come, divide us and destroy the
Goan ethos and communal harmony we now enjoy and ...which might become
extinct along with Amchem Goem.

just my view

jc

PS: please do send my your response and Fred's post that you responded
to.

BTW: I thank you for your photographic ability. I will write to you
privately wrt that in a couple of days.

Goans working for Sesa Goa and those in Goa and else
where should fight tooth and nail to deter the sale of
this company. Or else there will be more Goans out of
work. Unfortunately the core employees are bharats.

Hello Chopsticks .

It is the Japanese Mitsui Corp which is planning to sell its 51% equity
stake in Sesa Goa.

Now here is something to interest you: a Brazilian Company called CVRD is
also bidding for Sesa Goa. One of the people involved in the bid is a Goan -
Elson de Barros Gomes Jr, Honorary Consul of India in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Coincidentally Elson wrote to me yesterday My favorite food that my mother
does with lot dexterity are lentils as moong, masur, tur, and channa I also
like a lot of the chutneys that she does of mango from Karela or Brinjal .
and that is why I cannot loose weight.

Good post Allwyn.

Now that India is enmeshed in the vagaries of American style cowboy
capitalism, it can expect to undergo the business cycles that were
unknown before such capitalism made itself felt.

It was not too long ago during their currency crisis, that while the
Asian Tigers most of whom were capitalist running dogs, suffered
abject misery of the kind that led conservative Muslim middle class
working wives in Jakarta to walk the streets and sell their bodies to
feed their families, India was insulated from any such thing. Poor
maybe, but thanks to Indira Gandhi and Subramaniam and his Green
Revolution, with enough to feed their families.

I am not against capitalism but not of the unbridled kind. Anyone who
thinks that capitalism can and will regulate itself to meet society's
needs and take care of society's poor and disadvantaged (read most of
India's population) must think again.

Roland.

Capitalism, like guns, they will argue, does not kill people. Who is
to say? But it, indeed, is hard to resist after big brother has shown
us the good life. Another inconvenient truth.

Dr. Leo Rebello - (former) Goanetter ??

RONALD REBELLO
in memoriam

by Fayyaz Pathan

Ronald Rebello (25), son of Dr. Leo Rebello and Mrs. Kashmira Rebello and
brother of Robin Rebello, passed away on Friday, 23rd February, 2007, after
25 days of high fever which remained undiagnosed or refused to reduce
inspite of comprehensive tests and best of treatment, creating a heavy void
for his friends and extreme grief for his family. All those present at his
funeral said that a saint had died too young.

Ronald graduated (BSW) from the Nirmala Niketan College of Social Work, in
2004, then went to Sweden on the prestigious SIDA Scholarship. Visited UK,
Germany, France, Denmark and Finland and returned to India to work for the
poor and downtrodden, like his father. His heart was with the Tribals.

Ronald also participated in the World Social Forum in Bombay and the
European Social Forum in London, actively.

Presently he was doing his LL.B part II at the New Law College, Matunga,
and, like his father Dr. Leo Rebello, was very active in social work. His
letters to the editors were accurate, brief and clear.

He founded Justice Corps to educate people on Law and bring about much
needed reforms. Next month he was bound for Japan on a Swiss scholarship,
but Allah, the merciful, called him to His side.

Ronald's friends will meet at the Rebello residence on Sunday 4th March to
plan for future activities in his memory and to complete his unfinished
goals; like he was working on 25 different manuscripts.

They also wish to bring out a book entitled Ronald Rebello - the saint who
died young and institute scholarships at the Nirmala Niketan in his revered
memory.

Ronald Rebello, R.I.P. Our sympathies to grief stricken parents, Mrs.
Kashmira Rebello and Dr. Leo Rebello and his brother Robin Rebello. Readers
of Agni Times may contact them on 28872741.
