[Goanet] 1947 REVISITED

2014-09-28 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
1947 Revisited

Chief Minister Parrikar's comment on the invasion of Goa must have
gladdened the hearts of the majority of Goans, and made a few sad. Had
India invaded Goa in 1947, then we Goans would have been free like all the
other states in India, said Manohar Parrikar.

I agree with the Chief Minister's view and share his sentiments fully. Had
we in 1947 sought to get rid of the Portuguese colonialists, as we did the
British colonialists, the endless debate on the issue of annexation or
liberation of Goa would not exist as it would be seen today as a fight
against colonialism, Portuguese and British.

In 2014, more than sixty years and two new generations after the departure
of the Portuguese, it is neither Dayanand Bandokar nor Jack Sequeira who is
leading the fight for Special Status for Goa. With the BJP government in
power at the Centre and State too, it is probably none other than CM
Manohar Parrikar who is destined to create history. The ball is with him.
Can he score?

We need to understand the context of the Chief Minister's statement. His
point of view is reasonable.

In 1947, what was unreasonable was the presence of a strange and complex
man who wanted to free India of colonialism with the power of love and
non-violence. He saved a lot of blood from being shed unnecessarily. The
freedom movement saw little blood; it was the separation of India and
Pakistan which created a bloodbath, and which Gandhi was against although
he finally accepted the inevitable.

This unreasonable man in 1947 opened the eyes of the world to the power of
non-violence, and - to give the devil his due - the British showed they
were civilized, practical and mature enough to realize that the sun was
setting on the British empire in India and in Africa. Gandhi created a
revolution in political values and way of thinking in the twentieth
century. Even beyond the grave, his philosophy influenced the civil rights
movement in the United States as well as the struggle against apartheid in
South Africa. He has, without doubt, influenced millions all over the world
- including Albert Einstein, the father of the nuclear bomb which
decisively ended the Second World War.

Which other Indian has such a profound, moral influence on global politics
in the twentieth century? No other Indian is even in the same league! And,
in this age of potential nuclear warfare, is there a better philosophy for
the survival of the human race than non-violence? The advanced countries in
the world are more aware of this fact than less advanced nations. Is it
because they have more to lose? The atomic bombs which devastated two
Japanese cities at the end of the Second World War were no more than fire
crackers compared to nuclear weapons today. Gandhi's presence looms bigger
than ever.

Gandhi's influence perhaps is greater in countries outside India than our
own. After Independence, the Congress Party used this hero of the human
race and an Indian par excellence as nothing more than a mascot, a symbol
of honesty and respectability to loot the country for more than half a
century! The young and innocent girl that was the Congress Party at the
time of Independence grew up to become the Mother of Corruption.

Nowadays the media often ignores Mahatma Gandhi's great achievement and
misleads readers with the information he slept with young girls. This
eccentric man who was married when he was eleven would have young girls
sleep next to him to see if he still had sexual desire in his old age. The
phrase, however, to sleep with was famously highlighted by President
Clinton, who said that he had not slept with Monica Lewinsky when he was
cross examined about his relationship with her. The phrase, he said,
usually means having had sex which he had not had with Monica. Today, the
whole world knows he didn't sleep a wink.

The two great diseases through the centuries has been colonialism and
nationalism. All the world powers, at one time or another, have fallen
under its spell. Some have learnt their lessons well, others have not.
During the Second World War Germany was in love with the idea of the
superman race, which allowed Adolf Hitler to seize power in a democracy and
then to destroy a large part of Europe, gassing to death millions of Jews
and other people who did not belong to the superior Aryan race! Hitler even
refused to shake hands with Jesse Owens after he won the hundred metre race
because he was a black man. If Hitler were alive today, I wonder what he
would have to say about President Obama.

Today, Germany has bid goodbye to the insane vision of a superior race and
is at peace with all countries, a great pillar of strength of the European
Union. While there are differences within the EU, there cannot be a war.
This is a great European victory which people all over the world admire and
envy, with the hope they too can achieve the same.

For those of us who live in the twenty-first century, the greatest
challenge is the survival of humanity and our

[Goanet] FOR A BETTER GOA

2014-09-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Towards a truly Swachh Goa the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar must first
find a broom that can cleanse the rampant corruption in his government by
sweeping away the corrupt Ministers to begin with.

For transparency and accountability in the working of the government, the
Chief Minister should immediately appoint independent minded Information
Commissioners as the working of the State Information Commission continues
paralyzed for over two and half years. We also need forthwith a sturdy
Lokayukta to keep a watchful eye on the unbridled corruption and nepotism
that has reached its peak under Manohar Parrikar at the helm of affairs.
Only then could we hope for a better and possibly even a greener Goa.

Are Sweet Potatoes Good for Diabetics?

by Aglaee Jacob

Sweet potatoes are a better option than white potatoes for diabetics.

Being diagnosed with diabetes often means eliminating or
limiting many of your favorite foods. Foods with a high carbohydrate
content, such as many desserts, large amounts of pasta, breads, sugary
breakfast cereals and soft drinks, can make your blood sugar levels
skyrocket within a few minutes after eating. Over time, this can damage
your small blood vessels and lead to heart diseases, blindness, kidney
diseases, stroke and even amputations. Diabetics can include a variety
of carbohydrates that are digested more slowly, such as the ones found
in non-starchy vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and sweet potatoes to stay
 healthier with their condition.

White potatoes, whether you have them mashed, baked, as
french fries or potato chips, have a high glycemic index, which means
that their carbohydrates are quickly turned into sugar, which elevates
your blood sugar levels after your meal. The glycemic index of sweet
potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according
to a 2002 article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood
sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes.

Carbohydrate Content
A medium sweet potato contains 26 grams of carbohydrates, of
which 3.8 grams are dietary fiber, while a cup of mashed sweet potatoes
has 58 grams of carbohydrates and 8.2 grams of fiber. Fiber, which is
part of the total carbohydrate content, does not elevate blood sugar
levels and can be subtracted from the total grams of carbohydrates to
have a better idea of the blood sugar-rising potential of a food. In the
case of a baked sweet potatoes, subtract the 3.8 grams of fiber from
the 26 grams of carbohydrates to determine that they contain only 22.2
grams of available carbs per serving. With mashed, sweet potatoes,
subtracting the 8.2 grams of fiber from the 58 grams of carbs gives you a
total of 49.8 grams of available carbs per cup. If you are carb
counting to control your diabetes, use available carbs to be more
accurate.

Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics.
Bake them in the oven until they are soft and serve them with a little
bit of sour cream, plain yogurt or butter for extra flavor. Sweet potato
fries are also a healthy alternative to take-out or frozen french
fries. Cut your sweet potatoes into fries, drizzle them with olive oil,
sprinkle them with salt and bake them in the oven until cooked. Mashed
sweet potatoes with cream and butter also make a tasty side dish that,
despite its sweet taste, won't be a problem for your blood sugar levels
if consumed in controlled amount. You can even reduce the carb content
of your mashed sweet potatoes by mixing them with equal amounts of
mashed cauliflower. Make sure you accompany your sweet potatoes with a
bit of fat from butter, olive oil or avocado and protein from meat,
poultry or fish to get a balanced meal.

It is about time to end this artificially-keeping-down of interest rates. For

jc,
You have been generous with your words but the gold thingy began more than 10
years ago. It is so old that business schools are already teaching about the
conditions that led up to it, in their historical classes!

As far as interest rates are concerned, economic policy in the west is now
geared to giving those who make the most profits, the most benefits. In other
words, it is tailored to those who take risks i.e. create jobs. Those who are
risk averse because of their nature, age or any other reason are being
penalized as the rate of inflation is higher than the interest paid on their
savings. This is sound economic policy. When the unemployment rate goes down,
interest rates will rise.

One last thing, a correction in the stock market is always an opportunity to
buy low. Any idiot can buy at high prices.

[Goanet] WILL RAJENDRA ARLEKAR GO THE JAYALALITHAA WAY?

2014-09-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
After Tamil Nadu’s Jayalalithaa will Goa Speaker Rajendra Arlekar’s
disproportionate assets case give him the distinction of landing up as the
first guest at the upcoming Goa Central Jail at Colvale?

*On 9th February 2012* in an affidavit filed before the Chief Electoral
Officer Rajendra Arlekar had shown his income for the year 2010-2011 as Rs
2,76,671 and that of his wife Anagha Deshpande Arlekar who is a school
teacher as Rs 5,87,186. Rajendra Arlekar prima facie concealed the real
income earned by him from his HP petrol pump dealership “Om Shree Vetobaa”
located at Vasco. In that affidavit he had shown his total liabilities by
way of loans etc as Rs 30,54,314 and further liabilities by way of
Government dues as Rs 2,64,734.

*On 31st July 2013* in his statement of assets and liabilities filed before
the Goa Lokayukta his liabilities were shown as nil. Within a short span
of just over a year after becoming Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly
how was he able to clear his huge liabilities of over 33 lakhs? The income
of Rajendra Arlekar’s wife which was Rs 5,87,186 in 2010-2011 shot up to Rs
9,32,278 in the year 2012-2013.

*On 26th August 2013* Speaker Rajendra Arlekar purchased a 500 sq mt plot
at Porvorim on a payment of Rs 72 lakhs. Sale deed does not reveal the mode
of payment, whether amount was paid by cash, cheque, or draft. He also paid
an amount of Rs 2,52,000 towards stamp duty and a further Rs 2,16,280 as
registration and processing fees of that Sale deed.

It has been sought that Rajendra Arlekar be booked under Section 13 (1) (d)
 (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and Section 120-B of IPC
along with Section 34 of IPC. If the investigation reveals that Rajendra
Arlekar has further bought any other properties his vows would only
compound. For a truly Swachh Goa there first needs to be an absolute Zero
Tolerance to Corruption.

Re: [Goanet] Goan editors in turmoil

2014-09-28 Thread Eugene Correia
Stephen's heading for the post is confusing. He has targeted a paper that
calls itslef
Voice of the people. Can't believe that he himself is afraid to name the
paper, though one can surmise which one it is. Stephen himself has been a
regular contributor to the Opinion Pages, mostly in the column, People's
Edit, or has written many letter in the Letters to the Editor section.

Why are the editors in turmoil? The fight between rival newspapers is
common not only in India but throughout the world. Just recently the Times
of India and Hindustan Times were trumpeting that they are No. ! in Delhi,
with the readership survey coming out.

Maybe experience Goa-based journalists such as Fred can tell us what
turmoil the editors are in. One can criticize their work by exposing
certain faults but a sweeping statement such as the one headline by Stephen
over his post should be sustained by examples or context.

I remember Dr. Joe D'Souza's article was refused by the paper and the
writer used it in Gomantak Times. I want to request Stephen to send me
backchannel the article as I wish to read it again. I thought that the
writer allegedly made some remarks against the paper or the editor, but I
want to be sure what I read and understood is correct.

colonialism, Portuguese and British.

jc 1: I am not really sure that this contrived 1947 question is of benefit to
any thinking Goan. What next 1865 revisited? And why were there issues with
Hyderabad and Junagadh? Were the Portuguese involved in Kashmir too?

I submit that there is NO reasonable Annexation v Liberation debate. There is
no doubt that Goa was annexed and there is no doubt that Goa was liberated from
the Portuguese.

The on-going, seemingly never ending debate would be a non-starter IF in
1961/62 Goans were given the freedom to exercise the right to
self-determination. It is my personal belief that at that time, Goans would
have opted to join India.

JB-P 2: The phrase, however, to sleep with was famously highlighted by
President Clinton, who said that he had not slept with Monica Lewinsky when he
was cross examined about his relationship with her. The phrase, he said,
usually means having had sex which he had not had with Monica. Today, the whole
world knows he didn't sleep a wink.

jc 2: I suggest that those among us who use terms, even as common as 'cross
examined' and 'had sex', make the effort to ascertain if their usage is
accurate.

WHY would Clinton be 'cross-examined' in that case? Was he not the defendant? I
will not comment further on the case because it is of zero benefit to the case
wrt Goa and also because I believe that Joao is confusing the issue relating to
'Sex' in the case.

I am not sure that Eugene Correia is accurate when he states that Jose Vaz is

there any verifiable evidence that Jose Vaz practised the caste system or even

I also find it difficult to accept that the practice of caste is a cardinal sin

Those who practice the caste system could not be Christians.
