Fr.Jose Nascimento Mascarenhas  --Researcher, Historian   passes away

He was born to Felipe Xavier Mascarenhas and Ana Eufregina Lobo at
Saligao, Bardez on 8-9-1940, the youngest of 5  brothers and breathed his
last on the  early morning, 9 a.m , 7 Sunday, 2018 at Holy  Spirit Church
Margao, . He studied at Saligao at Union and Mater Dei  Institute, then at
minor seminary and Rachol. He was bed ridden for a month and a diabetic of
late. His health in the past was indifferent suffering heart attack and
bypass surgery in 2003. He was well cared for and treated with multiple
medications. Last met him on 29-12-2017 and never imagined that the end was
so near. I observed some loss of memory and lamenting about the misplaced
key to his room, where he was shifted for his convenience. He  requested
for grooming of hair and to wear spectacles for a last photo., He advised
me to write 4 lines every day, whatever that meant. I first met him at
Sucaldem Chapel and he gave the impression as a sincere, honest, committed
follower of Christ devoted towards spiritual strengthening of his flock
.Unassuming, practical, voracious reader and eye for details He excelled as
singer and composer

He was ordained  priest on 26-4-1970 at St Andrews Vasco.He served the
parishes of Margao, Vasco, Rachol,Panjim .Gurim, Chinchinim, Veroda, St
Estevao . appointed P.P.O.L.Penha de Franca,, Porvorim. He was on the staff
at Margao, ( 8 years).Loutolim,Vasco,Moira , Mapusa. He served as spiritual
Director for family life movement of Goa Archdiocese

The streak and trait in him as a Researcher, writer, historian surfaced
much later. He has authored 10 books. He was  self financed  and by well
wishers being  under financial strain and not commissioned by any
agency/organization. Under Follow me series, he has documented profiles of
Diocesan priest of Bardez,(I) 2008, Series II, Ilhas,  Salcette / Marmagoa
III , 2010  Priests of Salcette and Mormugao were under preparation. It
will be in the fitness of things, if his labour of love, dedication is
completed and printed posthumously. He has published about priests from Goa
in Portugal ,under the title “Proclaimers of  God`s Kingdom from Goa  to
Lisbon” 2001. Authored a pean to Ophthalmologist, Dr. Claudio Gama
Pinto.(2002) He authored “Successful people of Salgao all over the
world”.”Mormugao rich history”,  2006 and used as a reference book. He
also published a book on Fama of Menino Jesus, Colva. He was a frequent
contributor to Gulab, Renovacao, Goencho Avaz’. He has documented rich
heritage, Goan culture, folklore, and traditions. He was the first to
reveal the enchanting marvel of equinox  March 21,  also Sept. 23 for 3/4
minutes at around 6.15 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church, whereby the Sun`s rays
from 3 windows illuminated  left and right side altars of Mary Jesus, and
emblem of Holy spirit in centre in the Church.  It is believed that the
Church was designed on astronomical calculations to determine equinox. Ever
since Parishioners and others visit to observe and admire this celestial
 and a rare  natural phenomenon

He was the recipient of state award for Literature 2013-14 for his work on
history , legend and traditions- Saligao Village “Land of Sal trees” . True
Value Foundation  has  honoured him as” Outstanding Goan” for services to
the society in history and literature.  CM, Digambar Kamat offered
plaque,memento and shawl. For the dissemination of his works he has opened
a blog”saligaoseranade .com “.

. The ecclesiastical authorities are grateful about research of Church
history, literary works, documentation of profiles of priests ,an
invaluable asset, treasure trove of information ever compiled as records of
the Diocese.

This Goan guy likely does not belong to Goanet or forgot some of the posts on 
Goanet.  This is a post I was wanting to write for quite some time in the 
current news cycle. 
Some may recollect that we had some lively, scholarly and emotional articles on 
Goanet on the perfect acceptance of consensual sex; even by a married person - 
albeit the practice is condemned by the religious authorities and proscribed by 
current morality standards.  The response of the proponents of consensual sex 
was;  "Whose religion and whose morality"?   No names please!
After a few titillating posts from mostly post-menopausal Goan men for whom the 
topic of interest was more in their minds than below their belt, I responded on 
this subject, "lest some Goan combo falls for these 'petulant' thoughts and 
ideas."  I made more than a dozen points about the perils of consensual sex.  
Unfortunately for the brave and intelligent participants, my post ended the 
thread.
In my response, I pointed out there was no such things as consensual sex:  with 
minors, with students by teachers, with patients by doctors, with clients by 
lawyers, with parishioners by priests, with prison inmates by prison guards; 
with employees by employers; etc. etc.  
I pointed to the TV series in America called "To Catch a Predator" which was 
mostly filmed in California where the entrapped persons were mostly Indian 
techies.   When caught / trapped, their excuse was like this Goan guy;  
something like - "I was trying to rescue these underage girls; and I really did 
not and had no intention of doing anything wrong (prior to being caught)" ; 
while their documented e-mails tell a different story.
In the current news cycle in America, many many girls are coming forwards 
naming famous names (at-least a dozen) of past 'predators' who engaged in 
consensual sex.   The foremost and best known name being Donald Trump, the 
president of USA.
I had pointed-out that partners in consensual sex claiming, "to have been at 
the time under the influence of alcohol or other drug"; or just changed their 
mind in what is termed, "Monday Morning Regret".
"Hair Grooming" a perfectly legitimate and widespread practice in Asia 
(including Goa) is very much frowned on in the West and is considered predatory 
behavior.  Don't even mention the thought, unless one is a hair dresser!!!
This is just a revision class on this current topic of interest.:=))

For any prudent person, joining the now disgraced and dubious Vijai
Sardesai led Goa Forward Party it would be a political suicide. Waiting to
mount on the third Mandovi Bridge would be a far better option. Only
scoundrels and rogues who have skeletons to hide and need protection will
join the birds of the same feather.



And why this sudden Love for Dr Jack Sequeira by the Goa Forward bandits?

Not a word on the serious and the deadly Coal issue, Nationalization of
Rivers and the Mhadei imbroglio.



Very deafening is the silence by the Goa Forward over the U turn of Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar on the Mhadei issue after cores of rupees having
been squandered by the State on legal fees paid to Atmaram Nadkarni and his
entourage on this Water dispute. How have we reached such a shameful and
pathetic situation?



A statue of Jack Sequeira in the Assembly complex will not reduce the Coal
pollution, the current endemic corruption, lawlessness and neither will it
resolve various issues including Mhadei which are a colossal threat to Goa.



We needed to first build a Goa that the late Dr Jack Sequeira would have
wanted. But Goa has missed the bus and landed in the dumps with the Goa
Forward now accelerating the last rites of our State which was once the
Paradise of the East.

Does the crafty Town & Country Minister Vijai Sardesai need any further
proof that Goa’s remaining hills and fields are under a blatant assault.

Vijai Sardesai should stop lecturing us with all his empty rhetoric and
honestly admit that all the illegalities are going on with his tacit
blessings. And we now know why he ushered in administrative chaos and
anarchy in the Town & Country Planning department by appointing three Chief
Town Planners.

And those flying squads in the Collectorate have become toothless with the
Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte having conveniently clipped their wings.
Less said the better on Rohan Khaunte’s integral link with the land mafia.

Infact on account of the entire cabinet being closely connected with the
land sharks, a Green Goa is now swiftly being reduced to a concrete jungle
enveloped with Coal. Amen
