He is from around Calcutta but I think he isn't Goan but Anglo-Indian

As for God or the Pope being a Goan it smacks of backslapping.

The truth might be this - the Devil is a Goan. Not too bad as Hindus

Dear you state that you have been following with concern and regret the
discussions going on columns about the possible practical results of the
eelction of a GOAN POPE. which, though remote is not impossible

*MY HUMBLE RESPONSE *

Dear Jean & Marcus

You both are remarkable, Indeed we are all unique and that includes me……In
this respect I was reading an article by a group of
matheticians…apparently,,,if you think that Newton, Einstien. or Hawkin
were brilliant think again. According to them if you think of all the
UNBORN” & all those that will follow US ALL , you will find that there are
many intellectual giants to follow…..I am writing a story to draw attention
to the +10 million Indian women. Who in the last two decades or so have
been killed aborted, because of dowry, caste etc….add a similar number of
Chinese also eliminated for reasons related. Ditto slavery…Think of the
Women Professor who won the Able Prize, or the first American Women , who
worked on the Jumping gene theory, think of the obstacles they faced. It
happens in all societies. As the Director of Post Graduate Studies at
UDSM I realized how rotten lige can be for women.girlbut that is another
story. I try to shoulder my responsibilities as a Catholic….I do not think
we should not leave it to the Popes, or Bishops or priests should shoulder
all responsibilities, The liety should participate . I have four points to
make

*1) **First of all I want to Thank You Both: *

I HAD NOT EVEN HEARD of Cardinal Das ….you state that Cardinal Das, a
brillian intellectual, who knew 13 languages including Aramaic and Sanskrit
and an ideological soul-mate of the elected Pope, who, if elected would
have gone a long way steering the church back to its moorings? undone by
Vatican II.I am aware there will be contrarian views as there are on any
sub ject but Cardinal Dias ….You have a BUT….. Give mea priest like Saint
Joseph Vas, was true to theDEo yoy realize the single biggest advance
in te 20th Centure was the use of Venecular languages, should priests face
the congregation and go back to the old days…..*Do you realize that the
last supper Christ faced the apostles. Did he use Hebrew, Why did Latin
become so important…..it was an Imperial Language ……etc The Second Vatican
did a good job*.

*2) **What Has All of this to do with the GOAN POPE?*

An Octegarian Profeessor like me, in the Goan Digest has written how bad
and nasty, Popes, Bishops, and Pedophiles have been. There is no doubt that
several of them carried some very very shameful and disgusting acts and
actually bragged and perpetuating it. I agree with the Goan Professor (Is
he a white Canadian Goan)

The fact is that there were some REMARKABLE POPES ) There should be a
balance…Starting with St Peter and now the Jesuit Pope Francis…His
visit to Qatar, and various other places….compassionate, understanding,
respects sancity of life,….those priests and others who commit crimes
should be persecuted….the church will not stand in the way. What else do
you expect Pope Francis to do….Beome the judge and Jury and reintroduce the
Inquisition.

*3) **So what What Has All to do with the Posting that Mervyn in
Texas,, Roland and My Friend who spent time in Northern Kenya and is now
resting inSouthern England*

I cannot speak for the others, But the best line of defence is to be able
to laugh at ourselves when we have to face reality> Take it from me there
is no disrespect…..even the thought of disrespecting those who do great
work in the name of Christ…. One of the earliest books I read from cover to
cover, bought from my first stipend was We African….autographed by Satchmo
Himself, became friends with Jonathan Kingdon you suddenly realize how
terrible our religious/politicians /kings have b een ! Read Eddies
account of Henry the eight treated his priests, bishops,he even
executed Anne because she bore him a daughter instead of a son. My friend
from Madras reminded me that the total number Roman Catholics would have
been very much higher had it not been for the English, the Dutch etc. We
are cracking jokes about the absurdities of us Christians. Yes when doing
my field work in the Pacific PalisadeI found that the Methodist had
successfully banned any bars in the township ….they did the same in India.
If a Goan Pope banned Prawns, and Shell fish, I would not suffer one night
of sleep….I am allergic to them…

I am laughing at ourselves and the things we do in the name of Jesus.

*4) **I am a Goanphile actually trying to find my identity*

….I think any Jesuit, Franciscan, Maryknoll…etc who try to help hungry
People, stop abuse ,, listens to people

I think Goans are remarkable, basically Indians. But Hindus, Muslims, Pre
St Francis and Post \Francis

[Goanet] BJP’S CHEAP POLITRIKS OVER EVEN THE DEAD

2019-03-27 Thread Aires Rodrigues
While we are amidst elections, the deceitful BJP is trying to desperately
and deviously garner sympathy over the death of Manohar Parrikar. But the
people of Goa are no fools. From the very statements of the BJP leaders
that this is going to garner votes for BJP is admission that the BJP is
bankrupt to showcase any of its achievements during the reign of Manohar
Parrikar and instead, the party is heading towards near annihilation.

We all know the sheer mess that the former Chief Minister has selfishly and
very ruthlessly left behind. It has been a long string of U-turns,
abundant scams and corruption galore.

The current so called condolence meetings are infact party campaign
meetings and even ferrying those ashes across the State will bring no
solace to the fast sinking saffron party. Time for the Election Commission
to step in and prevent malpractices by a dying party at the cost of a dead
man.

While mourning should be a private family affair, the BJP is shamelessly
publicizing those private visits of dignitaries to the residence of late
Manohar Parrikar. All this stage managed cheap drama will yield the BJP no
mileage and they should just allow Manohar Parrikar’s Soul to rest in
peace.

Goa needs to move on and recover from the irreparable damage and
destruction of the State that we have witnessed over the last few years.
Less said the better on the awful and appalling legacy that Manohar
Parrikar has left behind. Goa's most corrupt, communal and very vindictive
Chief Minister.

[Goanet] OffTopic: Francis First Pontiff to Write (Computer) Code

2019-03-27 Thread Albert Peres

Pope Francis Makes History by Becoming the First Pontiff to Write Code

As well as writing code, the pope held video conferences with young
people from around the world at the ‘Programme for Peace’ project launch
last week.

by Ross Kelly, Junior Staff Writer @rossk_1992
https://digit.fyi/pope-francis-writes-code/

Computer history was made last week when Pope Francis helped write a
line of code for a United Nations development app.

At an event organised by the Scholas Occurrentes foundation in Vatican
City, the pontiff joined three young women to write the code. As well as
becoming the first pope to code, he called on students around the world
to learn computer science for world peace.

The event marked the launched of the ‘Programming for Peace’ project,
which aims to introduce students from disadvantaged communities to
computer science and to help use their tech talent for “ethical” purposes.

The three young women, Matilde Fabrega Vivanco from Chile; Nicole
Rodriguez from New York; and Liuren Yin from China, are learning
computer science in school. Vivanco helped the pontiff in adding the
last line of code to the app.

The app the trio wrote aims to show how technology can be used to
advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The goals are the UN’s blueprint to “achieve a better and more
sustainable future for all” – which address global challenges such as
poverty, inequality, climate and justice. A key focus of the scheme is
to improve education and innovation around the world.

A commemorative plaque shown on the app screen was blessed by Pope
Francis, which read: “Computer science empowers young people to create
peace in their communities. Everyone should learn how to harness
technology, to use their creative power for peace.”

As well as writing code, the pontiff held video conferences with young
people from around the world and spoke to children who had participated
in a number of technology programmes promoted by Scholas.

Hadi Partovi, co-founder of Code.org, was present at the launch of the
Programming for Peace project, live-tweeting the events as they unfolded.

During the event, Partovi commented: “In the 21st century, computer
science is a fundamental subject that all students should learn. Schools
should teach computer science to prepare students for the future,
empower children with creativity and teach how to harness technology and
creativity.”

Re: [Goanet] The late John D'Souza

2019-03-27 Thread Eugene Correia
Merwyn, yiu are writing as a friend. Few hours ago I came from the Mass and the
reception, while his cremation was private. I taled to few people and some were
aware of my post on goanet.
All agreed that John was "problematic" and I am now sure why those on Goa
Archives Canada (GAC), which started as Goa Archives Project (GAP), left with
the whole project in John's hands.
The project was to be completed in 2010 and till today it isn't done. Whenever
the issue was raised with him, he just brushed it aside. No doubt it was his
idea, but he wasn't, as someone said, a "team player."
In fact, he came up with tons of ideas but one of the persons ge consulted with
said they were "not practical."
I agree with those said he was a good background worker. He could take on the
leadership role even when he was the sole motivatir of the idea on formation a
group or an association.
I said he was blunt and irrational at times. He called me shit-disburber and in
the same breath he said we need someone like me. Shows how he saw things,
double-vision, if I mat say so.
I care a "shit" what Fred has to say, for he hasn't interacted with him as I
did. Recently, he sent an email to couple of us on Goanet requesting to post
something he wanted to be noted on Goanet. And I replied to him ssying why he
can't do it himself, shooting from someone else's shoulder.
At Braz Menezes' book launch he saud to me that a threw a spanner in the
celebration of 30th year of the First Goan Int'l Convent, held in Toronto in
1988. I had written as what is there to celebrate since the IGO born out of it
is "dead" or "comatiose." It was my view as someone who played a crucial role
in the hosting of the convention.
I met Norman da Costa, whi wrote on Cyrian's page to which I reacted, but he
said nothing. A close friend of John told me that calling Jihn an "icon" was
ridiculous. Who are "we" who agreed to say he was an icon, may I ask you? May I
ask you if John was a "historian"? Or, a "history buff"?
I hate to say but the Goans from Africa here are "clanish." The Dr. Rebeiro
School network is strkng and they stand by each other. So are Uganda Goans. No
diubt, Goans who came directly from either Goa ir Bombay nicknamed GOA as Goans
of Africa. When I came here in 81, a couple of Bombay guys asked hiw I can get
along with the African Goans as I plunged myself with vokuntary work fir the
GOA and tgen served under three Presidents. My reply to these well-meanubg
Bombay guys was that i am nit afriad to butt heads with them. Till today, I am
not scared to take them on.
John Nazareth shook hands with me at the Funeral home, as he was also angry for
my writing againt the celebrations of the convention. Both Johns didn't play
any role whatsoever in the convention but were front and centre to celebrate
the 30th year.
merwyn, you have yiyr vuews and I have mine. Though I must say I harbour no
ill-feeling for John, and it's just my assessment. One iif guys from the
now-defunct Steering Committee of the GAC approached me when he saw me at the
church entrance and we spoke about the GAC and he said he would talk to John's
brither Romeo abiut getting the stuff from John's basement. He saud he would
get in touch with me. Wait Nd see if like-minded people can salvage the GAC and
make it a real testimony to Jihn's memory and his devotion to "tracing our
roots", the motto of the GAC.
