[Goanet] Casinos in Panjim
Recently one veteran goanetter, exhorted others to hold the newly elected state representative of Panjim to his promise to remove the floating casinos from the Mandovi River. The idea is to relocate these casinos to land so as to preserve casino-related jobs. Thank god someone in Goa is concerned about (someone else's) jobs. Making casinos land-based still has the concerns regarding tourism, moral deprivation, alleged corruption, garbage disposal, etc. Another important benefit of casinos is the tax revenues they generate. In today's age where citizens do not want to be taxed and yet want more services from the government, and the cost of those services goes up every year with inflation, entertainment tax is a painless way for the government to raise revenues. Goans want to do away with casinos and yet want the "high-end" tourists to come to Goa - a classical case of "Cognitive Dissonance." Regards, GL
[Goanet] PANAJI WILL SMARTEN ONLY UNDER GOOD GOAN PLANNERS
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has called for a public interaction by the beleaguered Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited tomorrow evening at 7 pm in Menezes Braganza Hall at Panaji. This morning that interaction was suddenly pre-poned to 5 pm. Surprisingly the office of the Chief Secretary who is the Chairman of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited is totally unaware of such an interaction scheduled for tomorrow. It is now expected that the so called hurriedly called interaction with the public scheduled for tomorrow will be postponed. Will keep you posted. Let us hope that the Chief Minister will assign at least four clear hours so that the citizens of Panaji can effectively deliberate on such a crucial issue of transforming a sinking Panaji into a Smart City. It would be incumbent on the authorities that on this Panaji Smart City Project they should also consider the inputs of the newly elected MLA Babush Monseratte, the Mayor Uday Madkaikar and at least the three candidates who contested the recent by-polls to the Panaji Assembly Constituency Subhash Velingkar, Valmiki Naik not forgetting Sidharth Kunkalienkar for whom that Smart City concept was over the last few years clearly a vehicle for total personal enrichment. Let us also be enlightened by Utpal Parrikar who has suddenly woken up claiming that he has a Vision and Road Map for Panaji. [Goanet] The WONDERS OF INDIA'S DEMOCRACY
India's General Elections are over. So what sort of candidates have won? Nearly half of the newly-elected Lok Sabha members have criminal charges against them, a 26% increase as compared to 2014, according to the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR). Of the 539 winning candidates analysed by the ADR, as many as 233 MPs or 43% have criminal charges. The BJP has 116 MPs or 39% of its winning candidates with criminal cases, followed by 29 MPs (57%) from the Congress. In the new Lok Sabha, nearly 29% of the cases are related to rape, murder, attempt to murder or crime against women, ADR said. “There is an increase of 109% [in 2019] in the number of MPs with declared serious criminal cases since 2009,” it said. Eleven winners including five from the BJP have murder charges against them, the ADR said. India's Parliament always had MPs with a criminal background. It seems it cannot function without criminal MPs.
