They’re immigrants to Canada. So why are they supporting far-right
parties that want to reduce immigration?

Photo: Kulbir Singh Chawla greets fellow protesters during the United We
Roll convoy at Parliament Hill in February. After moving to Canada from
India, Chawla experienced what he calls a political awakening. He now
calls himself a Canadian nationalist and attends yellow vest rallies,
where he wears a matching yellow turban.

Edmonton

Kulbir Singh Chawla really doesn’t like when he’s connected with a
customer service representative with a foreign accent.

This, despite having a accent himself.

“Here in Canada, I would say don’t even employ Kulbir,” Chawla said of
customer service jobs.

“Because I still don’t have that Canadian way of (speaking) fully.”

The most recent federal election saw a small but distinct cadre of
people of colour and immigrants such as Chawla supporting and in some
cases even running for far-right populist parties such as the People’s
Party of Canada, the National Citizens Alliance and the Canadian
Nationalist Party.

All of these parties wanted to reduce immigration and scrap Canada’s
official multiculturalism policy.

Despite being an immigrant himself, Chawla says he supports these policies.

Chawla, an industrial engineer, came to Canada from India with his wife
and daughter in 1999. He currently lives in Nova Scotia and calls
himself a Canadian nationalist. When he first moved here, he considered
himself left-leaning, but over the past two decades, he’s experienced
what he calls a political awakening.

It led to him attending yellow vest rallies at the movement’s peak,
where he would wear a matching yellow turban. And people would call him
racist.

“The left media would say this is a racist movement. And there I am with
my turban. And it just breaks their narrative,” he said.

He was first drawn toward the Conservatives, then toward far-right,
fringe parties such as the National Citizens Alliance, which in addition
to advocating for lower taxes and the abolishment of the Bank of Canada
Act, wants to reduce immigration levels to about 50,000 a year. Chawla
previously ran for the National Advancement Party of Canada, the NCA’s
predecessor, in Calgary Midnapore in a 2017 byelection.

He says some reasons his political stance shifted are political
correctness and liberal “indoctrination” about issues such as white
supremacy and racial profiling (the former he says doesn’t exist, the
latter he believes is valid in some cases).

Kulbir Singh Chawla takes part in a yellow vest rally.

“It started with the yellow vest movement … It’s come up as a big, I
will say wake-up movement for Canada and Canadians. It brought them
together as well. So there’s a great deal of populism and nationalism
going on,” Chawla said.

He compares nationalism to working for a corporation; the ultimate goal
should be the betterment of the company, rather than advancing one’s own
personal fortune. The same goes for living in a confederation.

It’s where his deep distaste for call centres that employ people with
accents stems from. He said he believes it hurts Canada both
economically and in terms of its national identity.

In particular, he is opposed to customer service being outsourced to
other countries, for economic reasons — it takes jobs out of Canada and
hurts the country’s GDP. It inspired him to create a Change.org petition
urging the government and corporations to “Create call centres in Canada!”

But he acknowledges there’s an important cultural component as well.

“When I come here, if I found my own type of people speaking on the call
… then it’s no different from being in India,” he said.

“We immigrants came to Canada for a whole different outlook on life. And
we find it’s all changing, back to the same old Punjabi style.”

For parties such as the People’s Party of Canada that were accused of
harbouring racist candidates and policies, there’s an obvious benefit to
having candidates and supporters of colour, says Akaash Maharaj, a
former senior resident at Massey College and CEO of the Mosaic
Institute, an organization that helps bring together immigrants who have
come to Canada from countries affected by conflict.

“There has been an effort by extreme right parties to try and play a
game of blackface and brownface to inoculate themselves against
accusations of racism by demonstrating that they have at least one or
more members of their parties or candidates who are not white,” Maharaj
said.

But the allure of anti-immigration policies for immigrants themselves is
more complex.

“On the face of it, it looks absurd and I think it is absurd ... I
wouldn’t say it’s widespread,” Maharaj said.

[Goanet] Beyond the Grave: By Thy Fruit You Shall Know Them!

2019-10-28 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Beyond the Grave
Looking back at: By Thy Fruit You Shall Know Them!

For the week which passed (17/7/21-14) when I was alive on Planet Earth.

Maybe in the 21 century we might have to dig deeper and amend the
statement Jesus made more than two thousand years ago to this: By thy
roots you shall know them. In spirit, it is no different!

Metaphors change with time, culture, and circumstances.

Why are we Goans not strongly denouncing the bashing of Lamanis in
Goa? Have we become hypocrites and anti-national?

Let’s get our priorities straight: We are Indian citizens which gives
us a right to live and work anywhere in India. It is not a privilege
given to a few chosen people.

People who object to Lamanis working and living in Goa can always
leave the country, and Goa, and go elsewhere - including Portugal -
but if they want to live in India they have to uphold the rights
framed in the Indian constitution. Otherwise, they are subversive and
anti-national people.

That Goans are found to be working everywhere in India is no secret;
not only in this country but all over the world.

What do Goans who want to get rid of Lamanis have to say about this fact?

The majority of Lamanis are working legally as are the majority of
Goans, in Goa and everywhere else. What is the reason for Lamani
bashing?

Not only Lamanis have been successful in getting jobs in Goa but
people from everywhere in India. Why pick on the Lamanis?

If the issue is about illegal activities of Lamanis in Benaulim then
what about the illegal activities of Goans in the village and all over
Goa? Who rents their houses to the Lamanis if not Goans? Have Goans
not been renting houses to Lamanis for decades now in south and north
Goa?

If the people want only legal businesses and legal businessmen and
businesswomen it is a change for the better. But the yardstick has to
apply to everyone - Lamanis and non-Lamanis, too.

The Goans who are on a rampage against Lamanis are giving other Goans
a bad name.

A lot of Goan families depend on Lamanis to do some chore or the
other. I am among them. If the Lamanis are not allowed to work in Goa
(which can never happen) but is the dream of people with a narrow
village mentality, the roofs of hundreds of houses will fall on our
thick skulls.

We need to learn to be grateful and not spit on a helping hand
otherwise our roots will rot (if they haven’t already). We need to be
grateful for all the help the Lamani community has given to enrich
Goan society in a hundred and one ways.

If our roots rot, then the branches and twigs will also rot, and the
tree will produce rotten fruit.

require the "danda" from someone in authority to do what is right and be law
abiding citizens? Unfortunately authority is setting the bad example! The
shenagins after elections makes us wonder when truth and people's mandate will
prevail in our nation. The Shiv Sena and BJP tussle in Maharashtra is
interesting! We keep electing our oppressors to cater to our greed and illegal
wants. We are ready to die for our religion but live upto its noble
tenets...only if it suits us. Hypocracy all around is it not?

[Goanet] PLANT TAP ROOT TREES ALONG AVENUES

2019-10-28 Thread Stephen Dias
PLANT TAP ROOT
TREES ALONG AVENUES

STEPHEN DIAS, DONA PAULA

In the light of the incident of a tree that was uprooted in heavy rains and
high velocity wind at Campal, it should be stressed that a scientific
approach be adopted so as to ensure that such incidents in the city
especially, where traffic density is high and the prospect of casualties
being high due to inclement weather, be prevented. Having observed the
roots of the uprooted tree, it is plain to see that this particular tree
had adventitious roots. Since adventitious roots are widespread and do not
grow deep into the earth, it would be suggested that botanists be taken
into confidence so as to ensure that trees lining a certain road be trees
that have tap roots, which are firmly entrenched and firm in the soil and
are therefore unlikely to uproot easily. Another aspect of trees planted
along avenues is that branches are phototropic in nature, meaning that
branches grow towards sunlight and thus may always lean away from the trunk
making it thus more susceptible to being uprooted when strong winds blow.
Botanists with the help of the Forest Department have to tackle this issue
of preventing trees from being uprooted by planting trees that have tap
roots. Also adventitious root trees lining a particular avenue should be
compulsorily trimmed from time to time by the Corporation of the City of
Panaji or respective municipal councils and the Forest Department to
prevent further occurrences of tree uprooting in the cities and towns in
particular which could entail high casualties of lives. The botanist,
Forest Department and the Corporation or municipal councils should team up
in Goa to prevent uprooting of trees in a scientific manner.

[Goanet] WILL SATYA PAL MALIK RESTORE TRANSPARENCY ATTHE GOA RAJ BHAVAN?

2019-10-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The 77 year old Mridula Sinha who continues as Goa Governor despite her
five year term having ended on 31st August will now be replaced by 73 year
old Satya Pal Malik who since August last year has been the Governor of
contentious Jammu & Kashmir.

Mridula Sinha in her five year jaunt merrily converted Goa’s Raj Bhavan
into a BJP Dharamshala for the RSS, VHP, and the Bajrang Dal to congregate
while she very deviously kept the Raj Bhavan out of the purview of the
Right to Information Act. It will now have to be seen whether this current
veil of secrecy continues to persist under Goa’s 18th Governor Satya Pal
Malik. Like Mridula Sinha her successor is also a BJP politician but who
has travelled through various political parties including the Congress,
Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Janata Dal, Lok Dal and the Samajwadi Party before
embracing the saffron brigade. Satya Pal Malik who was born on Christmas
day hails from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh and is a law graduate.

All this huge extravagant expenditure at the Raj Bhavan is a criminal waste
of public funds. For a cash strapped Goa, the Raj Bhavan should have led by
sturdy austerity measures. Like all the Raj Bhavans our Raj Bhavan must
also come within the ambit of the RTI Act so that there is absolute
accountability and total transparency in all that transpires within that
heavily guarded fortress. It defies logic and fair minded thinking that a
publicly funded Raj Bhavan should not be transparent and under the scrutiny
of the taxpayer. Surely, he who pays the piper should be calling the
tune.

Goa has seen some very outstanding Governors by way of Lt Gen. J.F.R.
Jacob, Dr. S.S.Sidhu and Mr. B.V. Wanchoo while we have also witnessed
those from the other end of the spectrum on whom less said the better.

It’s high time the nation debates on the manner in which Governors are
appointed and whether we need ornamental puppet Governors needlessly
burdening the taxpayer. Constitutionally the Governor possesses executive,
legislative financial and judicial powers. The role of the Governor is very
important and essential for the healthy functioning of democracy. However,
in recent times this post has been reduced to becoming a retirement package
for politicians. As a result people think that the post of the Governor is
worthless and a financial burden on state governments even though
technically the role of the Governor if exercised wisely and fairly for the
benefit of the state and its people is very vital.

Sarojini Naidu, the one-time Governor of UP had said that she considered
herself “a bird in a golden cage”. Dr.Pattabhi Sitaramayya, Governor of
Madhya Pradesh had this to say, “My duties as a governor lay more in
getting visitors and providing them tea, lunches and dinners than anything
else. The first thing I do in the morning is to peruse the list of visitors
and invitees to lunch and dinner”. KM Munshi, Governor of Uttar Pradesh had
a tiff with his Chief Minister and had complained to Pandit Nehru for
redressal. When his plea was turned down, he described his job thus: “to
run a hotel and entertain guests”. NV Gadgil, Governor of Punjab considered
himself as “the Patwari of the State of Punjab whose function was to assess
the conditions prevailing in the state and report to the Union government”.

Governors cannot end up being mere rubber stamps as they constitutionally
have a major role to play in overseeing that the State is well administered
in accordance with law. They should be appointed on merit as the Raj
Bhavans cannot end up being shelter homes to rehabilitate the deadwood of
the ruling political party. After all, do we really need a “spare wheel” at
the state level?
