When we first arrived in New Zealand 35 years ago and heard people working on

Cruise Ships use the word 'Goanese' Goan residents here frowned and I
still
remember a friend (since expired) saying Those from Samoa are Samoans so
Following the Goanese debate, it seems to me that we get irritated
because the word has connotations that are associated with a lower
class status -- the ABCs of the ayahs, butlers, cooks and the like.
