Well you can check out the past questions and give it a shot. There's no
crime in trying. No one will penalize you for trying. Moreover the more you
try, the more you get used to the system.

If you are a beginner, I would recommend Stroustrup's Principles and
Practice.

Koenig and Moo or Lippman, LaJoie and Moo are good if you have good
programming experience in another language.

Bruce Eckel's Thinking in C++ is good and has the side benefit of being
free (like beer)

It depends on why you want to try the contest. Is it to stretch your brain,
and see what problems you can solve? Go to it with Java. The 12th-place
finalist in 2003

didn't even *know* any other languages. Is it to learn new algorithmic
techniques? Again, the language doesn't matter much. Is it to try out new
languages? This lunatic  started
a trend where people try to solve problems using as many different
languages as possible, and (with the site at http://www.go-hero.net/jam)
you can find solutions to problems in lots of different languages.

TL;DR: Absolutely compete. Don't worry about the language you use unless
you want to.

Just to back this up: last year's 10th placed candidate (
http://www.go-hero.net/jam/15/name/pashka ) reached the top 10 just using
java and last year's 8th placed candidate (
http://www.go-hero.net/jam/15/name/linguo ) reached the top 10 just using
python ( well, one c++ for speed )

To Hamza,

The best way to learn is to do. Look at some old problems, and try and work
out how you would approach them in a contest situation.
https://code.google.com/codejam/contests.html has some suggestions of good
problems for a new contestant to try.

Don't get disheartened if you find it hard initially. Lots of great
programmers I know would struggle with the qualification rounds, and most
would not reach Round 2. It's a very different skill set (with some
overlap) to being a great programmer, but it can be exceedingly enjoyable.

You don't really need to wait if you don't want too, I would suggest you
just try it if you are interested. I would suggest that you try a practice
problem ahead of time. We have a wide range of problem levels. The
beginning of the "Practice and Learn" section gives some tips on how to
