I have a short deadlines since I am driving fundraising for htis conference. If we are going to make fundraising goal for a spring conference (eg May) I don't have a lot of time. The website is the current focal point. That said, I don't want to use something and then have GUADEC something else. It makes no sense to have two conferences using different software so I want to push to have both GUADEC and LAS/GINA use the same software. The other issue is that whatever we pick we are our on our own, from what I understand GNOME sysadmins won't support any other conference software other than whatever we used this year. I wasn't happy with the experience and I don't believe it is a scalable process. OSEM is attractive as that I will have support from a team and considering that we are co-locating two conferences in the same location there is a slight bit of complexity. If I have to find hosting outside the GNOME infra, at least let me get it with someone who is working to help me and is eager to help. But if both conferences use OSEM then perhaps we can convince sysadmin to host it on our infra. Lastly, we also have this - https://github.com/openSUSE/travel-support-program, which will probably help the travel committee when it comes to dealing with travel subsidies. If all of this comes integrated then we save a lot of time for everyone. In any case, I'm not excited by conference software, I'm interested in the shortest time to getting something spun up and get things moving and having the most support. The good thing is that LAS will test any software before GUADEC and smooth things over for the next team. > Secondly, GNOME.Asia has already used OSEM for the past couple of > > years. > wait, what? [guadec-list] conference software
LAS is looking to move to a new conference software. We would like to move to OSEM (http://osem.io/). I realize there was some talk about using whatever FOSDEM is using, but honestly that software is 8 years old and nobody supports it. There is 5-6 dedicated people for OSEM. So, I'm hoping to make an executive decision and move to OSEM. Even better, LAS will be the first GNOME conference next year and so we will be the first to move to the platform. Secondly, GNOME.Asia has already used OSEM for the past couple of years. Your mission if you choose to accept is to not respond if you agree with the decision, or if you have questions then please respond or if you object say so and explain why. Elementary is still a fairly fledgling company, and they might opt to go with West Coast Summit (or whatever I end up calling it) since it is closer for them. We had quite a few of them attend this year. So if they go, they'll have to pick one of them and if they pick Europe it will be lot less of them. There are other desktops built on GTK+ tech, we should consider that new one which I can't recall who have a desktop based on GNOME, there is also a QT project based on OSTree that might be worth reaching out to. Finally, you also need to invite people who are interested in runtime and the like. That is a killer feature, and if you can find people who have played with it and built something with it, that would also be worth having. So, there are opportunities, we might need to pre-seed them and encourage something quite a bit beforehand. sri ___ guadec-list mailing list guadec-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/guadec-list

This is such a great question, thank you for posting it on the mailing list. I think attending GUADEC is one of the best ways to familiarize yourself with the platform, but also be able to meet the maintainers and get to know them at a personal level. This then gets reflected in bug reports that you might file later. This is also your opportunity to tell platform developers your needs as a developer. For instance, perhaps there is a gap that is missing in one of the libraries. If you can formulate a good argument for inclusion they could work with you on creating that feature. Resources are tight, so it's important that you are able to communicate that such a feature will improve the platform. Join us in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain and take part in the excitement and energy of GUADEC from 23rd - 30th of June and learn about OLPC and GNOME. ___ guadec-list mailing list guadec-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/guadec-list
Re: [guadec-list] Press team
So I think you and the current members of the press team need to have a 30 minute discussion and get a brain dump. Then we can come up with some good stuff. What you've got here I really good. Also can you give me access to the wiki? My current login doesn't seem to allow me to edit pages. I want to add a press team page there for organizational purposes. Following are my comments.. On Sun, May 28, 2006 at 08:21:16AM +0200, Quim Gil wrote: Two important things: - Currently we have 293 participants registered and we aim to have 500. We have less than 4 weeks to reach that number, and the press work plays an important role. Agreed. We need to generate buzz. I think we can a) start having people mentioning it in their blogs, build up technorati and other blog engines. b) we want to particularly generate it in Europe since it'll be a lot easier to get to. - About international press, I don't think we will get many journalists from abroad but a) we can explicitely invite those we would want to come and visit us (i.e. a European correspondant of Wired) and b) we can keep them informed during the GUADEC days anyway, so they publish stuff. Excellent idea. We can put that down in the wiki and organize someone to make that contact. Also, international press have correspondants in Barcelona, i we build a sexy story they might pic the car and come to Vilanova one Core day to see what's going on. Right, we need to give the impression that this conference will have worldwide impact. That should perk things up. We also need to build news stories for them, thinking from their perspective. Jim Gettys and OLPC is one news story. Simon Phipps explaining how big is the Asian move to free software can be a news story. Federico GNOME co-founder thinking of to make GNOME faster than other popular OSs can be a news story. I wonder if we should start doing meetings regularly to get this accomplished. I believe there are interesting news stories behind most of our sponsors, and they will help us making them known. Waldo Bastian might have a story on why Intel is so interested in free software. There might Well, if you read Waldo's interview on GNOME Journal, it's sort of thinly veiled as to why Intel is interested in desktops. :-) However, Waldo and I can talk about that. I have a fairly good idea why. We need to generate a list of people journalists can interview (pointing to them who has a potential interesting interview) and help them contacting these people and arranging an interview, either life at Vilanova or by phone... Yep. In plan. I mean, no wonder if we go produce the same type of press release saying that the GNOME community will meet in Vilanova blah blah and then we don't get any relevant coverage out of the usual notes in the usual suspects media. I agree, we need to produce something interesting that says we are meeting and what happens affects the world. That's the kind of marketing you want. sri El ds 27 de 05 del 2006 a les 19:02 -0700, en/na Sri Ramkrishna va escriure: Alright, sounds good. As Sri seems to be the only volunteer, I guess he is the coordinator of the press team for GUADEC ;) Great... :P Me and my big mouth. I would suggest you can review or redefine the task list, match each task to someone,... or whatever you consider according to your experience :) OK.. It's not too late for someone to step up and do this. Leadership skills are important when finding a job! ;-) If Fernando and David can manage the press, I could write the Press Kit (Spanish) and translate the press releases (at least 1 to announce the conference plus 3 for each day) to Spanish also. Sounds good. We should probably set up some contacts for the press to know who to approach for press contacts. The point I am worried about is contacting Spanish press and getting our press releases published. Maybe we have a couple of contacts through some gnomero, but it's important to know this as soon as posible, don't you think so? Well, I guess the step then is to figure out press contacts. Why not ask Fluendo since they are a Barcelona based company and ask where they would go for press? They must have some sort of director of communications or something. Hows that for a start? Secondly, I wonder if the government has a list of press contacts. What is the equivalent of the Chamber of Commerce for those who know how to translate that into a spanish equivalent... I guess that would be a start. sri -- ___ guadec-list mailing list guadec-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/guadec-list

I agree here. (sorry, joined late. :-) The ones I like the best is where the logos unobtrusive. I really think it's fine as it is, and we have better things to be spending time on. Plus, over-branded t-shirts are ugly. One of my favourite branded t-shirts has a small logo on the front around the breast pocket, and a slogan on the back (unbranded).
