[h-cost] Re: Re: Leeds Market
Doesn't ring any bells (pardon the awful pun). Was he inside or outside? There is a stall inside that used to be run by an asian guy, but that's just been taken over by two white blokes. And Jack's fabrics (the place that sells suiting down near the bottom, inside), has been taken over by the curtain fabric place next door (I think Jack retired). But they still sell the lovely wool suitings and overcoating. There's now also a lovely jewish bloke outside (not there on Sat for obvious reasons), who gets some lovely patterned wools. And a guy who's there on (I think) Friday and saturday if the weather's good. He sells some seriously gorgeous silks for little prices, so I like him! (He also sells lace and assorted intersting bit and bobs.) Which haberdashery shop at the top? The big one or the little one? The little one's now been taken over by Samuel Taylor's and have put their prices up (don't quite understand it cos they're literally only round the corner). But in consequence the place seems to be selling less and less habby and more and more rubber stamps! But there's still a fabulous stall at the bottom, that's crammed to the hilt with all sorts of stuff (mostly hidden so you have to ask for it) - I swear if a fireman saw it he'd shut it down as a huge fire risk, but it's really good. Gonna stop going on now (can you tell I love the place?? :o) - the first thing I did when I came down to Yorks was spend about three days wandering round the market, learning my way round ). Debs In a message dated 6/4/06 2:06:07 AM GMT Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi! Debbie I used to go to Leeds quite a lot (we're only an hour's train journey away), and used to spend most of my time in the market. The last time I bought any fabric there, I went to an Asian guy who used to mimic a telephone ringing - is he still there? My husband had to pinch me to stop me from laughing, as he did it mid-conversation! I love the haberdashery stall that is right at the front; I ended up buying a carrier bag full of stuff I didn't really need (I will never run out of hand sewing needles!), but I was like a child in a sweet shop, as I don't have that choice in my home town. [h-cost] Re: Cotton conundrum?
From what I've read (can't remember the sources, it was some time ago) that cotton orignally came in several colours but white is the easiest to dye so plants were bred to be as white as possible. I think cotton started/was used as an ornamental plant, I think China? so colour would be desirable in that context. RE: [h-cost] Re: New Portrait of Eleonora of Toledo
Hi all-- I am sorry that there was a repeat of the email. I resent it because my computer said I was not on the h-costume list. I resent it trying to get it to post. I also sent it to the Society-wide Laurel's list, the Eastern Manche and Laurel lists, since no one had posted the link to those lists. Of course, I added my comments with the link. If you are on any/all of those lists, you would receive it multiple times. I am sorry for the inconvenience of seeing it so many times. BTW-- if you are on the Eastern lists, they are sent twice because of the way the email is sent: once to your own email, once to the list, so you will see it. Annoying? At times. But not a beheading offense. I had no intention of angering anyone , just informing them. As for this painting of Eleonora not being discussed as a subject on this list: since the h-costume list was the source,I thought it would be OK to comment. I did not realize one had to wait for someone specific, or a specific group of list members to make their comments first. I know that I am new to the list, but I was under the impression that anyone could comment on whatever had been posted. Please give me my assigned commenter number and I will happily wait my turn the next time. I can't be called an expert on art, but this does not look like Eleonora of Toledo, 2nd Duchess of Florence, to me. It looks like our Eleonora's niece Eleonora of Toledo,(she was the daughter of her brother Garcia). The younger Eleonora married Cosimo and Eleonora's youngest son Pietro (their 11th child)and was later murdered by him for supposed infidelity. (Not that he was any prize, but let's not go there...) The little dog (which is the same breed as the one shown in the painting Bronzino did called the Lady with the Dog( she is wearing a brilliant red dress) which has recently been identified as Maria Salviati, Cosimo's mother), means fidelity, but also sexual or marital love... The portrait in the BBC article is similar to at least 2 other paintings of the younger Eleonora I know of. I think the dress is in this portrait too late in style for our Eleonora-- the standing collar is a muchlater style. Our Eleonora had a very distinctive style that she brought with her to Florence. Also, if it was by Allori, I think he would have painted a more flattering portrait of our Eleonora , such as the one in Duke Francesco's Studiolo, which made her look beautiful and healthy, just the was Francesco wanted to remember his mom. Alorri painting would have been posthumous anyway... Bronzino's portraits of our Eleonora show her very gaunt toward the end of her life and her style of clothing is consistant. My husband and I have a theory that there should be wormholes between places with the same name, so you only have to drive to the one nearest and then travel almost instantaneously to the distant one. We think this every time we set off on the 10-hour drive to my parents, and pass a town of the same name about 1 1/2 hours into the journey! When my parents would drive to visit my Grandparents we would pass New Mexico, Texas and Warsaw, NY - all within a few minutes of each other. Near Rochester there is a Lima also, however if you pronounce it like the bean they will either hit you or throw zuchinni at you (depending upon the season) :-) And of course we can't forget Utica, Troy, Ithica and Ilion, NY.
