[h-cost] Primary source for Elizabethan pillbox hats sought

2009-06-26 Thread Julie
I'm trying to find a portrait of an Elizabethan or Italian lady wearing what
we'd call a pillbox hat. There's one that's OK in QEWU of the Countess of
Kildare but I know I've seen much better ones showing lots of beads pearls,
and in color. Any leads?

Y'all are the best!

Cin, there was a brief article about Ribbonwork ornaments in issue
#74 of Threads magazine (Dec 97/Jan 98) that showed how to fold a
cockade, pinwheel, etc.  You should be able to find back issues of
Threads *some*where [we all hoard things...], or ask your library to
request a photocopy of the article on Interlibrary Loan.  And--let us
 know if the instructions worked!

Cin, did you find the info you need? I have some info from Dickens, but it
is pages and pages. I can get it to you if you still need it.

Oops. Make that the Countess of Lincoln; her mother's the Kildare.

Anyway, the portrait is dated c 1575, by anonymous, and in the collection of
the National Gallery of Ireland.

I think this picture, and others like it, are what makes people think that
there is a padded roll style of headdress. It certainly looks like that to
me, but you say it is a pillbox hat?

The thing that struck me about this portrait is that it is the first one I've
ever seen that didn't look like some kind of padded roll or twisted/braided
arrangement. It has an edge and structure to it, which is even more obvious
when you look at the black white photo I saw first, here:

http://www.elizabethan-portraits.com/Various_4.htm

Go straight to the bottom of the page; she's third up. The original request was
for color, so I posted the other link. Anyway, take a look and see what you

They are from Dress in the Age of Elizabeth I by Jane Ashelford.
They're both from 1567 and are identified by Ashelford as being Mary
(?) and Elizabeth (?) Boleyn by Steven van der Meulen.

I will say that it looks like what some refer to as the Italian balzo.

At the 1999 North American SF convention in LA, the guest of honor
was Harlan Ellison. Included in the membership packet was a
mousepad with a changeable image of I Have No Mouth and I Must
Scream. Someone created a costume on the spot out of the mousepads
(several) and entered it in the Masquerade. It did win an
award. Harlan really liked it, also.

At UGA one year, we received a box of art supplies. The packing

make. She cut one large sheet into an apron, a chef hat, oven mitt
and placemats from others. It was a really cute getup. She covered
them with clear plastic like for table cloths and stitched the
edges. The apron and hat were usable but the mitt wasn't for hot
stuff. The teacher kept the set.

People have told me these are a type of French hood, but the effigy photos
I've looked at all cover the ears, which these don't seem to do. So, how are
these constructed? Are they a roll, a brim set far back on the head. A
couple have veils off the back, like a French hood, but seem to be rounded
more than a pillbox hat would suggest.
