I was under the impression that the Pennsylvania Amish wear only
natural fibers. At least the ones selling their cheeses and baked
goods in NYC were wearing cotton twills pants, skirts, and bibs with
cotton broadcloth shirts.

I like the Tarte 4-day stay mascara. It's pricey, but it stands up to my
allergy eyes, and I've even gone swimming with no smears. Considering that
one tube has lasted me almost a year, it's worth the price.

I don't know if this is OT, but I was asked to chat with someone who is
absolutely obsessed with boys in dresses. I was approached as a member of
an inactive Yahoo sewing group - I assumed the person just wanted to talk
construction and embroidery. She (there is a female persona with this

Hello,
I've seen some travel requests here previously, so I'm asking the group:
what's great costume-wise in Portugal? We're going to The Algarve, and
we're going to a few castles, but are there any great textiles to look out
for? What about fabric shopping?
Thanks in advance,
Stacey
Hello all, I'm coming out of lurkdom to ask for some travel advice. Does
anyone know of what's fun and h-costume-y in Portugal? We'll be in Lisbon
and the Algarve next week, and I know of a few castles and cathedrals to
check out, but what about textiles? Any good sewing shops? I know

I was sooo sad about them closing, I didn't know until one morning I needed
some bones and the website was down, and the guard at their building told me
they were gone. There is Steinlauf and Stoller on 39th Street, but I had
the opposite problem: I only needed 4 bones and they only sell by the
I'm coming out of lurkdom to ask; is anybody going to Costume Con? It's
down the block from me this year, so I have no excuse.

I can't resist! Unfortunately, I'm going to miss most of Saturday - the
Royal Wedding is making me work! I thought I'd make the Folkwear coat, but
a re-enactment event is interceding.

AAARRRGH! I found out that due to the royal wedding, I not only have to
work that Saturday, but that Friday as well. I'm wondering if I should
bother making anything for competition at all.

Of course, what was done with the cabbage? I can't see good wools being
used for dustrags, yet there's no evidence of American-style patchwork
quilting until the 18th Century.

The shoddy manufacturing is interesting - I was thinking pre-industrial
revolution. I can't comprehend that cloth that had been painstakingly spun
and woven would be simply stuffed inside a pillow. My modern mindset keeps
thinking that the thrifty Medieval or Elizabethan housewife would at least
