Dear Lauren,
I use a sharp pencil, og the kind with long sticks of crayon you refil your
pencil with, i think its 0,5 mm.
As i always embroider to the edge of the pattern, the thread wil cover the
pencil line, and therefore it is no problem with it.
Thats my way of doing it!

I've been using normal (read: cheap) colored pencils to mark dark black
fabric for a while, and haven't had any trouble. A normal pencil eraser
will erase them, but I can generally just rub real hard with my finger.
I've had no problem getting the marks to just wash out, though... of course,

Just thought I'd share a discovery with you. Frustrated by all my marking
pencils which, either disappear too soon, don't fit into a regular
