Re: [h-cost] Prym/Dritz dress forms
A bit behind here, but had to say that I had so much fun fitting the cover too. I was crying I was laughing so hard going through the motions with mine. I LOVE the form, but getting that cover on...should be filmed and put on America's Funniest. Can't wait until I can acquire another one :) Chris R. --- On Wed, 10/6/10, Marjorie Wilser the3t...@gmail.com wrote: From: Marjorie Wilser the3t...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [h-cost] Prym/Dritz dress forms To: Historical Costume h-cost...@indra.com Date: Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 11:00 PM I'm another who uses the Uniquely You. And it's HILARIOUS out of the box. Re: [h-cost] Prym/Dritz dress forms
Well, for what it's worth, I've heard of people making a very tightly fitted muslin of their own body, either one piece shoulder-to-hem, or with the seam at the waist, and stuffing it to approximate their body. Not the easiest thing to do, since you'd have to double check for non-circumferential measurements such as width and depth, but it could be done. I would not stuff it with a poly pillow stuffing, but maybe a wool or cotton upholstery batting. Then of course, there are the duct-tape doubles, paper-tape doubles and plaster-bandage body molds. All of these will get you close to your dimensions with your levels and your posture. Some work is involved, but some people think these are well worth it. The duct-tape form could be stuffed with batting and then corseted, but I have not tried that and do not know how well it would work. The plaster-bandage form is usually stuffed with a 2-part foam mixture that dries hard and would not work with corseting. The foam is also probably similar to what you're hoping to avoid. Best wishes. Laurie On Thu, Oct 7, 2010 at 3:54 PM, Emily Gilbert emchantm...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for all the advice! I think I'll skip the Dritz form, since it probably wouldn't adjust to my size very well either - I'm tall and thin with a small bust and a long torso. The pliable form sounds like a much better deal, but I'm not too keen on the polyurethane base of the Uniquely You. Does anyone know of a soft dress form stuffed with something else - cotton or wool batting, maybe? Alternately, a duct tape (or other material) dummy can be made over the corseted figure, if that is desirable for costume fitting. My local Hancock Fabrics is having a sale with Prym/Dritz dress forms (the Twin Fit and My Double models) at $40 less than the usual price. Re: [h-cost] Prym/Dritz dress forms
It is the one true dress form. Get it. Dont bother with dial a dummies, duct tape ones or any of the non-pliable types. I've had mine for 20 yrs and it's put up with moderate use abuse... including 2 overseas moves. --cin Cynthia Barnes cinbar...@gmail.com On Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 2:42 PM, Emily Gilbert emchantm...@gmail.com wrote: My local Hancock Fabrics is having a sale with Prym/Dritz dress forms (the Twin Fit and My Double models) at $40 less than the usual price. Re: [h-cost] Prym/Dritz dress forms
I'm with the group that says get a Uniquely You, or a similar squishable, shapeable dress form. The hard ones like the Dritz form, which I did buy first (actually it was a birthday gift from my hubby), will not be shaped like you unless you do some major padding up from a smaller form. Mine never could be like me, as I have a long torso, and even padded it could not get longer in the middle - which meant its minimal behind was several inches higher than my behind. My old Dritz is now in the garage waiting for a yard sale, while I am now very happy using the UY.
