Not necessarily. :-)

The only Wal-Mart in my immediate area that will still carry fabric after
this summer is just around the corner from a Jo-Ann's ETC and is in one
of

the country's fastest growing townships. The area is suburban and is
reasonably upscale. I've found lovely stuff at that Wal-Mart - linen,

blends and other nifty stuff. Most of it was on the dollar tables, too.

Interesting. I stand corrected.

What part of the country do you live in, if I may ask?

And that particular Wal-Mart is just over a half hour's drive from
Jo-Ann's

corporate headquarters and their accompanying mega-store.

Which might help to explain why that particular Walmart carries such good
fabric deals. :-)

2007-04-10 Thread Chiara Francesca
On of our local fabric mavens just posted (sorry, north texas news) that
there were 12 north texas wal-marts doing a huge sale this weekend on
fabric.

The speculation is that this may be nation wide and that it is the precursor
to the shutting down of these areas. I.E. what is sold will not be replaced.

Check to see if your local Wal-Mart is having this sale this weekend.

2007-04-09 Thread Margo Anderson

I'm in one of those small towns that only have Wal-mart for fabric.

Some of what I've found on the sale tables there:

heavyweight cotton herringbone twill, perfect for making corsets, $1
a yard

cotton duck canvas, $1
aubergine crepe back satin, $2
black slinky knit, $1
plaid taffeta, 60, $2
soft black stretch netting, $1
silver and black paisley brocade, $3
batik printed chiffon, $1
cotton gauze, in black, white, natural, and purple, $2
silk chiffon, $2.99

At those prices, I usually buy the bolt, sometimes several bolts.

Margo's comment confirms a theory of mine. I think the quality of items sold
at Walmart varies a lot by location--including whatever fabric they sell.

The Walmart nearest me (Exton, PA--a Philadelphia suburb) sells fabric, but
the selection is awful; almost exclusively cotton-polyester or polyester in
god-awful loud, tacky prints and/or obnoxious solid colors. But the daughter
of a good friend of mine went to college in West Virginia, and the Walmart
there was the only real store for 50 miles. Not only did it have quality
merchandise, she said, but the store was really nice inside--more like a good
department store than a low-end retailer.

So I think the fabric departments in Walmarts in areas where Walmart is the
*only* choice are probably quite good; it's in wealthier suburban/urban areas
where they're likely to fail the fabric shopper.

2007-04-07 Thread LuAnn Mason
It's definitely a treasure hunt, but that's what makes it fun. My best finds?
A lovely heavy white moire satin in cotton/acetate for my DIL's wedding dress.
60 wide and it was a dollar a yard. I also found some first run reproduction
fabric, the lovely smooth sateen hand and straight on grain printing for $2 a
yard. I had passed the same thing up at a specialty shop earlier in the day
for $11 a yard.

I also haunt my local Pendleton outlet. I dropped the better part of $250
there today, but that was for a total of 64 yards of beautiful Pendleton wool.
I was a happy. I walked out with nothing every time I went for the past three
or four months, because there wasn't anything worth taking home, at least for
me.

Well, our last competition costume (for Archon 2006 in St. Louis) was
designed at 11 pm at our local Wal-Mart around the fabric they had in
stock. It included black/blue/brown chinese brocade (acetate
probably), yellow quilting cotton, a variegated brown crushed panne
velour, and a stretch yellow patterned ruffle trim on clearance. It
also included some of the same crushed panne in burgundy and lining
for same, and light yellow sparkle rattail cording.

Title: The King in Yellow (from an 1895 horror short story -
  obligatory historical content ;-) )
Result: Best in Class Master Division

It was built in 2.5 weeks after the originally intended project
crashed and burned. If you were at CC25 - my costume was what I wore
  judging the F/SF masquerade.

We also buy bolts of the $1/yard stuff for mock-ups, and sometimes
find decent generic lining there too. Not our first choice for
fabric, but sometimes has interesting stuff.

  Sandy

Walmart carries garment quality fabric? I suppose it does depend
   on location.

I'm sure many of us share the thrill of the hunt, whether at WalMart, the
Pendleton outlet, or the unknown fabric store in the town we happen to visit.
Yes, I know they are getting fewer and fewer, but even quilting or craft
stores sometimes have suitable prints for some of my projects--I actually
found a
print for an early 19th century dress at a Ben Franklin in Reno a couple of
years ago, as well as a Lacis purse frame.

I'm not lucky enough to live near a Pendleton outlet, but we do have
a fabric outlet near me and it's easily my favorite place to shop!
I've gotten wool blends for $3.98 a yard, ultrasuede pieces for 7.98
a pound, and linen and linen blends for $4-5 a yard. I get especially
happy when they send out the 50% off your entire order coupons,
though my DH groans when he sees them arrive!
