when it comes to aligning those pesky guards just right: a thin layer of
plain old Elmer's school glue. You know, the sort that washes out of your
clothing. As long as the fabric is soakable, it all seems to come out

Temporary spray adhesive? It's designed like the air-soluble marking
pens - to lightly stick something down for embroidery then go
away. Put your applique in a box to control over-spray, then lightly
mist. This will make it like a post-it note. I believe there are
