Kate,
I graduated college in 84 recall being a bit amused amazed that
all the office guys were wearing pink. Yup. Pink shirt or pink shirt
white collar cuffs. Either way, accessorize with a pinker tie. Med
grey suit. I'm remembering Wash DC/ Beltway Bandit office wear.
Straight guys, sales guys, IT guys, corner office guys all of 'em in
pink.
After that, moved to Silicon Valley where most arent sure what a tie is.
As for your show, pink might give a different msg given the AIDS
crisis context of the show.

The Yellow Power Tie is a bit passe, at this point. I am not sure what the
power color is these days. I have noticed that strongly colored dress shirts
are in vogue. And I always keep an eye open for those daring few who know
the Way of the Bow Tie.

That's too early for yellow. In the mid/late 80's the power tie was red,
either a solid red or the striped one, occasionally a tiny print. I went
to work in the bank district in Boston in 87, and anyone who was anyone
wore a black suit with a red tie. Women wore brightly printed power
scarves. I still have mine in the closet.

I don't think yellow came in until the 90's.

A quick Google turns up that the yellow power tie was 1980s, and a 1987 article
alluding to the fact that they were already on the way out--so sounds mid-80s
to me.? (Sorry I don't remember from personal experience--my husband was in the
military in those years so had no choice of tie color!)

In my experience, '80s is exactly right. I worked in an educational
association office in Washington in 1984-88, and I remember the day one of our
VPs first showed up in a yellow tie. Everyone made good-natured jokes about
how cutting-edge it was and how he'd picked up on the new fad of the
lawyerly/lobbying types in the neighborhood. After that, I seemed to see them
everywhere.

BTW, the yellow ties weren't very bright, at least not the ones I saw. They
were a sort of dull yellow background with an all-over pattern of tiny dots or
paisley shapes (I think the pattern is called pine in tie lingo). I remember
it seemed the ugliest thing I'd ever seen, but after a while I got used to it.

I left that office in 1988, so this had to have occurred by then. I returned
in 1990 and went to work in a government office. My boss there NEVER wore
yellow ties, and I don't remember any from that time at all.

The way to answer this, of course, would be to hit a library that still has
hardcopy magazine collections. Look over back issues Time and Newsweek to see
pix of the power brokers, and you should run into the period of Yellow Ties
Everywhere. Another option is a men's fashion magazine like GQ, but I wonder
if this was more of an office thing done in real-life practice, rather than
something that the fashion houses promoted.

Yes! That was it! Even when it was everywhere, yellow was not the power tie.
I'd forgotten it was supposed to be sincere, but that's indeed the word that
was used.

Oh, I definitely remember the yellow ties being called power ties, too,

Power tie is part of the power dress code (dark suit, white shirt, dark shoes
with laces, sensible jewelry, etc.).

The power dress tie has diagonal stripes in an upward direction as per a
favourable graph.

Colour was not as important as the strength and blending of the colours. Bolder
colours came along in the 1980s. The exact when for yellow, red or any other
colour may be mappable according to what some prominent person wore on a
specific occasion.

As a general rule, more successful times had bolder colours so you may be
looking around 1985-86, just before the financial bust,

Around the time of Reagan's presidency. Sometime in the 80s and I think
there's something of a red power tie as well.
The folktale to it is that Reagan invented it where another says the a news

while Reagan started wearing the bold ties.
