You are right that the best way to learn linux is by experimenting
reading the web etc.
If so then there is no point in any lecture...
I think that the lectures we see here in the staying in linux series may
be interesting to many people, for example, the CVS lecture, many people
that use linux for a long time are not always familiar with CVS.
Also the shell lecture, if it includes basic scripting might be
interesting for many people.

In summery, I think
It is good that we have these lectures.

Is W2L was for less skillful people that wanted to know about Linux? Yes.
Are all less skillful people eager to experiment all the time? Probably not
all of them.

The question is what is the audiance? Is it to counter Windows and such so
people will know, like, love and use Linux as their primary platform for day

Or is the audiance potential Linux hackers/Administrators/Advanced Users ?

Why not benefit from the experience of another that already handled a few

It could be some kind of attack or some network device error, if you
get those messages with a ?onstant periodicity. If you decided to use
a telnet instead of ssh, try to run ( % script_name.sh ) this little
script. It will write to the file /var/log/ttloop_log the network
connections to your telnetd at the moment of the error event...

#!/bin/sh
while :; do
tail -0f /var/log/messages | grep -q ttloop;
date  /var/log/ttloop_log;
netstat -ntp | grep ':23 '  /var/log/ttloop_log;
done
Also, you maybe need to check the basic security rules like iptables,
xinetd attributes only_from or no_access - restrict an access to
telnetd by IP/Submask, access_times 00:00 - 08:00 ... , cps x y - if
exceeds x connections per sec, delays for y sec ( default 50 (or 25) 10 ).
I hope it will help ...

- Slava.

[Haifux] ANN: Lectures: Writing device drivers in Linux and Windoze

2004-01-26 Thread Eli Billauer
Hello,

Partly on behalf of Muli, I'd like to announce that two lectures, one by
Micro$oft and one by Muli, are going to be held as part of the
Operating systems course at the Technion. The issue is going to be
writing device drivers in the respective operating systems (no, Muli is
not going to explain how to write a device driver in Windows).

Schedule (both lectures in almighty Taub 1):

Sunday January 25th, 1430-1630: Microsoft.
Wednesday, January 28th, 1030-1230: Linux.
It should be pointed out, that Muli is going to run his lecture at
Haifux as well. You are nevertheless invited to hear his talk on Wednesday.

See you,

Re: [Haifux] Re: SIL lectures

2004-01-26 Thread guy keren

i guess the background for the SiL lectures was not discussed on the
mailing list, so i'll just repeat here what was discussed during the W2L
series in Taub 3.

there appeared to be a demand for lectures which are beyond W2L, for
people who have been at the W2L series, and want to continue, but are
intimidated by the normal lectures (what if i don't know enough to
understand what they talka bout?, i will fill silly to ask questions
when everyone else seems to understand everything, etc.). there is a gap,
which is too wide, between the level of W2L lectures and the level of
regular club lectures.

thus, we decided to make a short series to cover this gap - not beginner
lectures, but not too advanced, either. something that will eventually
allow people who've been at the W2L series, to join the regular club's
meetings. it was agreed that in these lectures, we'll fix the problem with
the W2L lecture - that of going too fast and not giving any real examples.

this series seems to have taken its own life now. some lectures have too
much material to fit into one meeting, so they are stretched over two
meetings. some other materia, that popped up during those lectures, will
require its own meeting (e.g. 'shell').

and since it looks like people are coming, we'll keep this going on, as
long as there is demand, and as long as people want to give lectures.
and since this series does not harm the regular club's meetings, i don't
think there should be any objections to carrying on.

i hope this makes matters clear.

and remember. claims along the lines of people should learn on their own,
we shouldn't help them will be ignored, since the 'we' do not include
those who make these claims.

[Haifux] Why SiL (Was: Eran Sandler on The Mono Project)

2004-01-26 Thread Eli Billauer
Wow, Shlomi.

I had exactly those those thoughts about the Perl lectures. Why are they
needed? Perl, after all, is a language that you best learn by trying it
out. And it has plenty of friendly tutorials that will show your way.
After all, the basics don't change.

And the thing I never grasped: Why were all these lectures part of
Haifux, when there's another group for that?

I think that the basic guideline should be that if there is a lecturer,
place, time and a *substantial* audience, a lecture should take place. I
don't attend the SiL lectures myself (after all, I've stayed) but I'm
quite confident that if the audience would stop coming, this whole
project would die out by itself.

And as you can see from the mailing list, these lectures are not a case
of the lecturer preparing slides and pushing them on the group, but the
other way around. These SiL lectures deal with the basics of UNIX, and I
believe that they will be run over and over again (not necessarily by
the same people) to get more and more people across the river.

Viewing your latest posts here and elsewhere -- are you trying to annoy
us by purpose?

Eli

Re: [Haifux] /var/log/messages question (fwd)

On Sat, Jan 24, 2004 at 09:33:14AM +0200, Orna Agmon wrote:

  ?

Each error usually comes from a specific program. In your case, it's
telnetd. Therefore, it's best to look for information on the error
message in the documentation (or sources...) of the program that
generated it. google is always helpful, too.

I get all kind of messages and I want to know what they mean.
  For example:
  Jan 19 23:38:58 nahum-x telnetd[24258]: ttloop: peer died: EOF
Jan 19 23:38:58 nahum-x telnetd[24375]: ttloop: read: Connection reset by
  peer

Nothing to worry about. telnetd is telling you that the other side of
the connection is disconnecting without properly terminating the
telnet connection first. It's abnormal, but it's bound to happen
sometimes.

And this one that is much more to worry about:
Jan 21 02:42:57 nahum-x kernel: eth0: Too much work in interrupt, status
  8401.

That says that your NIC is not too good. Again, it's not something to
worry about - the kernel should handle this gracefully. If you want to
solve it, you need either a better NIC (which one do you have?), or
possibly a better driver for it.

The reason I'm asking is because from time to time my telnetd is like not
  responding ...
Then I have to run service xinetd restart to restart the
  telnetd.

That is suboptimal. Is there a correlation between when the telnetd
does not repond, and the above messages? do other network services
work? can you ping the machine?

  Any information will be appreciate.

Just one more bit - telnet is unsafe, since it sends your password and
data in the clear (unencrypted). Always use 'ssh' if you can.

Cheers,

[Haifux] Order in Court (Was and Still IS: Flame Wars)

2004-01-26 Thread Orr Dunkelman

Dear All,

The Haifa Linux club (Haifux) is a place for Linux supporters, users,
developers, and other types of mammals, to meet and discuss Linux.
Currently most of our meetings have the following structure:
Lecture
Break+Discussions
Lecture Continues

The idea of some actions the club holds are to bring new people to use
Linux, and introduce them to the Linux world. However, the club is an
acronym for: a group of people who are related to Haifux is some obscure
way.

I once was asked when the management of the club was meeting. I admit I
never knew we had one, but besides that, any Linux related activity you
like to hold -- you can. The club will offer some web space for
announcement, mailing lists, etc. BUT Nothing else.

Whenever the club is doing something, it is actually a group of people
from within the club (another problematic concept, who is considered an
Haifux member?) who do something for the Linux/Open Source movement.

If the club wishes to have SiL -- be my guest.
If the club wishes to have Programming in Perl -- be my guest.

If the club wishes to have Salsa dancing in the Linux environment while
typing Python code on the keyboard strapped to the head of a Tux -- BE MY
GUEST (and please be careful about the dancing part).

As long it has some vague connection to Linux (where the only problem is
that I define vague) the club will allow the advertisement in the
website, mailing list, etc.

And if someone wishes to have 45 lectures regarding setting up X on SPARC,
and (s)he has no problem with only one listener -- feel free to create
such a lecture set.

Now, please do me a favor -- keep all flames to other distinguished
mailing lists:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

and much much more.

 1. One of the project goals is to be able to run the shell as the default

assuming that your shell is not compatible with bourne shell, you cannot
just replace the normall shell (/bin/sh) - you will be breaking down your

i am not sure how init knows which shell to run as the default shell for

you'll be able to use the still open root shell to change root to using
the previous shell again (you did check which shell this is before making

otherwise, you'll have to read the source code of 'init', in order to find
which shell it uses for single-user mode. if this is a hrd-coded value,

Re: [Haifux] Haifux Meetings on local media

 Hi,

I have called up Achbar Ha'ir to inquire about posting the next Haifux
meetings on their This Week's Lectures section.

Here is what they told me:

150 NIS per week for a 40 word ad. A short message, on a regular basis,
will cost 250 NIS per month.

Are you sure that you asked about standard listings, not ads? They actually
charge money for a service they should be providing to their subscribers?

That's 3000NIS/year, which is too much to spend on this. However, I think
150*5=750NIS might be a good idea to spend to advertise W2L.

[Haifux] OT: Hardware sale

2004-01-26 Thread Orr Dunkelman

A friend of mine came back from the US carrying some computer hardware you
might want to have (e.g., 2 USB bluetooth).

He sells them about the same price he bought them there...

[Haifux] Invitation for Lecture

2004-01-26 Thread Orna Agmon
Hello all,

We have an open slot on February 23rd. This slot is intended for a regular
Haifux lecture, i.e. not a Staying in Linux lecture.

We would like to encourage new lecturers to give a lecture on this day.
The lecture topics may vary, and do not have to be purely Linux. As past
lectures may show (http://www.haifux.org/lectures.html), other free
software, (good) programming, and even computer science subjects that are
more loosely connected with Linux are good topics. The guideline is:
what interests Haifux people to hear about. And of course what
interests Orr :)

So, Haifux people,_old_and_new_as_one_, you are invited to fill the slot.
It is a month from now, and the next open slot is somewhen around the
longest day of the year.

Orna.

Re: [Haifux] /var/log/messages

2004-01-26 Thread Kohn Emil Dan

On Thu, 22 Jan 2004, Nahum Cohen wrote:

 Hi,

Where can I find information about the error messages in /var/log/messages ?

I get all kind of messages and I want to know what they mean.
  For example:
  Jan 19 23:38:58 nahum-x telnetd[24258]: ttloop: peer died: EOF
Jan 19 23:38:58 nahum-x telnetd[24375]: ttloop: read: Connection reset by
  peer

And this one that is much more to worry about:
Jan 21 02:42:57 nahum-x kernel: eth0: Too much work in interrupt, status
  8401.

Sounds like a broken network card driver. A long time ago, I used to have
similar problems with Mandrake 8.0 Try to see if there are any updates for
your network card driver or linux distro.

The first draft of the slides for this one are now available at

The code the talk is based on is available at
http://www.mulix.org/klife.html (Linux Kernel Game of Life
impelemntation). As always, comments are most appreciated. If you like
that sort of thing, the kernel code has plenty of fun SMP races to
uncover ;-)

It should be pointed out, that Muli is going to run his lecture at
Haifux as well. You are nevertheless invited to hear his talk on
 Wednesday.

What Eli said.

Cheers,
Muli
