XP w/ SP2 firewall should block any app not whitelisted using a port
that's not whitelisted. A firewall appliance would not know what app was
making the call since that info is not part of a packet but can block

I have a computer with sensitive data. The data is on two separate
partitions. The primary partition is all sensitive data. The secondary
partition only has a folder that is sensitive.
I am not worried about external attack, I am not even worried about

Yes, m0n0wall is a very good lightweight FreeBSD-based solution. It is not
nearly as featureful as a distribution such as ClarkConnect, but for 6MB it
does an impressive job.
