All,
I'm happy to announce that the Index to Jewish Periodicals on Ebsco has been
updated with citations from journals received between January and June 2009.
This update adds approximately 6000 citations to the 250,000

I just installed the newest version, 1988-2006, and did a practice search.
I entered the keyword: Technion.
I got only 2 hits!
I can't believe that all the journals in this index, from 1988-2006,
had only two articles where the Technion would be a prominent subject.
Did I do something wrong?
Dear Safranim,
If anyone is interested in a consortium for Index to Jewish
Periodicals online, please let me know. Deborah Stern has spoken to
Ebsco and they are amenable. Once we know how much interest we have,
we can negotiate prices.

Dear Safranim,
Does anyone know if there is a consortium for the new Ebsco database
Index for Jewish Periodicals? We have received a price quote of
$399-425 for a yearÂ’s subscription. This is quite a lot of money
considering that the CD for the same database is $155 if you are a

Dear Ted,
It is a wonderful idea to expand coverage, but since RAMBI is available free
online, it would be a good idea to choose those periodicals not covered by
RAMBI so that we get the broadest coverage using both tools.
Wishing you continued success,

Edith,
I should have written that in my note yesterday -- clearly we would
have no intention of repeating work that RAMBI is doing.

AJL and Hasafran members:
The Index to Jewish Periodicals has been published in paper since
1963; we have published a CD-ROM version which includes citations
back to 1988, and last year we began to provide access to the Index
via Ebsco.
As of mid-2006, Ebsco began updating the Index online
The summary of my responses is that RAMBI is more academic, selecting
articles from both Jewish and non-Jewish scholarly journals, while
The Index to Jewish Periodicals indexes a wider selection of English
language general-interest Jewish periodicals. The Index to Jewish

Dear Hasafran friends,
I have been negotiating with my higher-ups and lay leaders for money
to subscribe to the new on-line Index to Jewish Periodicals. One
person responded that I should just use RAMBI online -- a Jewish
periodicals index that is free. I was not familiar with RAMBI, so I

Do your libraries subscribe to the Online version of the Index to
Jewish Periodicals? We have been buying the CD Rom version that is
not as convenient as having it online, but is about $500 cheaper.
Besides the convenience factor of being able to access it from the
departments

All,
One comment that we heard from Index to Jewish Periodicals
subscribers is that they wanted the index to be updated more
frequently. Now that we are accessible as a database on EBSCO, we
have been able to increase our update
Dear Lissa,
Doesn't the Seminary have a subscription?. As far as I know, that is the
only way at present to access the Index. At the AJL-NYMA Reference
Workshop this past Tuesday at JTS Dianne Romm announced that Gale-Thompson
was in the process of buying the index. I'd be happy to have any
After a trial and comparison with other databases, I started a
subscription to IJP this month. As databases go, the price of $850
seemed reasonable. I didn't compare the periodicals lists of RAMBI vs.
IJP (http://www.jewishperiodicals.com/02journalsword.htm ) though
that might be
popular English language periodicals, maybe the Index to Jewish

I have not tried the IJP via Ebsco, but the old version was terribly
problematic in terms of search capabilities. That said, it does cover
numerous periodicals not covered by either Rambi or Ethnic Newswatch: Rambi
has a more academic focus; Ethnic
Funds permitting, I do recommend that libraries continue to subscribe to
IJP, whether on book, CD-ROM, or via EBSCO. IJP and RAMBI (a free
resource) do overlap, but IJP indexes a range of non-scholarly,
English-language periodicals that are not covered by RAMBI. Not a few of

Please allow me to solicit your opinion on this: Do you think there is
a good reason for a library to subscribe to the Index to Jewish
Periodicals (available now online for Ebsco back to 1988 for $850)
since RAMBI is available for free? I am debating whether or not to
subscribe
