Re: The Listmaster speaks: Re: [HG] My page about Asturias and Galicia

2007-08-28 Thread DISKJAKEY
My last post on this subject also.

What began as a request by me concerning my Myspace Music page promoting the
music of Asturias and Galicia -- and some of the bands do feature the hurdy
gurdy as well as the gaita (the Spanish bagpipe). My post was in reference to
the Galician music available for download that was being discussed which turned
into a debate of semantics, history and style.

I call the music I play Celtic because it is a convenient term to describe
a certain style of music. It has nothing to do with any historical
connotation. But, some us need to place labels on our music in order to target
an
audience -- whether we play folk music of a particular country, or jazz, or
French
dance music, or klezmer, etc. So, in my opinion, the word Celtic gives a
potential buyer, listener, booking agent, or concert goer an idea of what my
music sounds like and also to be able to publicize an event properly.

I appreciate all the comments and discussion as this is a very personal type
of music for me, but we have been straying away from what this list is
supposed to discuss. While the king has spoken I think that the subject of
Celtic
music (especially when hurdy gurdy is prominently featured) should be
sonsidered
on-topic.

Thank you,

Jake Conte

Arle,

Thanks for the information. The Galician band, Berroguetto has a Zanfona
player and, as far as I can hear, uses no chien. The Castilian band, La
Musgana,
uses tons of chien in their tunes. Both styles work well for the tunes they
play. La Musgana puts a lot of rhythm in their music with all instruments
being played like drums from time to time. Love it.

Could it also be that La Musgaña plays traditional folk music and Berroguetto
is more on the progressive side?

Jake

Ahhh, Galicia. I spent a couple of months there in 1999. It is truly a
special place and well worth visiting. At the time, I was interested in
learning
the Gaita and met Miguel Mosquera, a luthier from Santiago de Compostella. My
sister had been an exchange student there in 1989 and so I was fortunate
enough to be able to visit some of her old friends in Vigo.

Hi Ian,

Please contact me off-list as I think they've been pretty liberal in allowing
us to discuss this -- which could be considered off-topic (although
interesting). I want to learn so much about the region.

Certainly, the people of Galicia see themselves as family with the peoples of
the Celtic world. All over Galicia, you can buy T-shirts of the 5 nations -
Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Corwall, Brittany, and Galicia (Don't know why
Asturias wasn't on the shirt).

I thought there were seven Celtic Nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales,
Cornwall, Isle of Man, Brittany and Galicia. I also don't understand why
Asturias
is never mentioned.

As far as the Hurdy-Gurdy goes, I met a great street musician named Miguel
who played great trad tunes next to the cathedral in Satiago. I also got to
see
Berroguetto live. Their zanfona player, Anxo, was great. I noticed that, by
and large, there is little use of the chien in Spanish playing. Have you-all
noticed that, too?

I did notice this.

I'll introduce myself in my next post!

Hello all. I'm excited to be back on the list. My name is Ian Clemons and I
live in Portland Oregon. I posted for a few months back in 2003 before
attending the Over the Water festival for the first time. I'll be attending
again
this year and I'm looking forward to getting more buzz back in my life.

Welcome back, Ian.

I'm very interested in the folk music of continental Europe. I especially
like Breton music and the folk music of Spain. La Musgana is my favorite
band...for now.

I would love to know more about Breton music. I also like La Musgaña. My
favourites from Spain are Jose Angel Hevia, Llan de Cubel and Berroguetto. I
also like Cristina Pato, Susana Seivane, etc I guess I like all of them.

I primarily play Irish tunes on the fiddle, but have taken-up the G/C
diatonic accordion over the past year or so. I don't have a 'Gurdy yet, but am
on
the list to get one built. Hopefully one or more of you Festival goers will
have a used one in your trunk for sale!

Let me know if you're planning any east coast trips as I would love to put
some fiddle and accordion parts on recordings.

When I am able to tear my attention away from musical pursuits, I work as a
Physician Assistant in an Emergency Room and am Dad to my 7- and 4-year-old
daughters.

You must be very proud and happy.

[HG] My page about Asturias and Galicia

2007-08-22 Thread DISKJAKEY
Since you seem to be interested in the music of Asturias and Galicia, you may
be interested to visit my page promoting the music and culture of these two
regions in Spain which are more closely related to Dublin than Madrid.

Are these tunes all traditional? Are there any muiñeiras? Since I am unable
to download at the present, can anyone either print the music or, if
possible, put on a disc? I would pay for your time and effort.

I would also like for anyone from Galicia or Asturias to contact me privately.

Even worse are guitar players who justgrip the neck and waggle fingers any old where. As long as they can do the instrument justice (get ready to write in if theydon't) or maybe they are hoping for a Mr Hanks to step forward? Let's justhope there is no monkey...

And how about Sting holding a hurdy gurdy and just turning the crank on the awards show.
