It is necessary that there be a limit. Valve must maintain a reverse contact
list in order to notify all your friends when changes happen to your status
(online/offline/in-game, etc.) The amount of effort required to do that goes
up dramatically when you get into hundreds of friends.

I would think they could add another 100 or so allowance on friends
list would be sweet but beyond that I agree, the server load would be
unbearable. Plus I wouldn't want to see 300 friends popping on-line
when first logging in once the standard work day ended around 5'ish.

often enough: need to talk to somebody, I look at their membership
groups, and find a small group with less then 150 members that is
public, and join that temporarily and then via that group I can
communicate with that
