Tip: make one or more groups, make it invite only and get them to be member. With up to 149 members you can directly chat with them via the groups tab in friendslist. At 150 this stops. It is necessary that there be a limit. Valve must maintain a reverse contact list in order to notify all your friends when changes happen to your status (online/offline/in-game, etc.) The amount of effort required to do that goes up dramatically when you get into hundreds of friends. that sounds more complicated than i'm sure it is. i'm sure there is a limited number of friends you can have(as previously stated) but having free communication methods without authorization (an Op-in option: meaning you should have the choice to turn it on) would greatly increase the community's ability to function inside and outside the game. for those that don't want to be bothered by the regular trolling, they can turn it off and require Friendship auth to communicate. in server chat is one thing to use, but the steam community communication system (in the process of getting an upgrade might i add) could be utilized better cross-platform be it a game or console. (then watch the chat server load multiply and have the chat down more than it already is) I don't see this changing soon (with the Community upgrade) but a push should be made to make these changes. I would think they could add another 100 or so allowance on friends list would be sweet but beyond that I agree, the server load would be unbearable. Plus I wouldn't want to see 300 friends popping on-line when first logging in once the standard work day ended around 5'ish. As far as freely being able to chat anyone, unless there was an option to disable public chat, it would be problematic. But they could modularize as an easy solutionAllow Pub Steam Chat, Allow Friends Only Chat, Disable All Text Chat. Would be a nice feature, but then, the way it is now isn't too bad so... I prefer vent for normal conversation. That would be pretty snazzy though on the chat, maybe they'll entertain it. And it makes for a nice in-game plugin to msg an admin about a server if there is an issue without having to resort to the irc relay which I stay away from. SM plugin to the API for steam chat... Allow in game steam msg to your admins from within game via trigger if admins SteamID. IE; !Hutch, speedhack on server 1 named booya --- msg in game. Goes to hutch or whatever admin is specified via in-game trigger through a list of approved flagged admins. If this exists, someone, please let me know of it, also I would like a plugin that could send a in-game msg to vbulletin shoutbox via ingame trigger... Yes, I am for that Do now... As I said, via the Groups you don't have to add one to your friends. Done often enough: need to talk to somebody, I look at their membership groups, and find a small group with less then 150 members that is public, and join that temporarily and then via that group I can communicate with that person. Takes like 10 sec extra. The person you open chat to, gets a popup notifier that you request a chat, with Ok/decline. The one big thing I would like to see improved is the warning with links shared via steam chat... instead of 1 generic one that is 1x click and gone forever. I'd like one that links per site to get allowed and that the setting is somewhere findable. (Now: once you clicked to allow links, you never get that dialog box back). And that the allowed list can be managed by throwing out untrusted, and even a block option, which gets send back to valve, to per default block it everywhere. This would be stopping a bit of the phishing and bad sites. Hey Valve, Community and all that read the HLDS, It's been a long time since Valve has updated Steam Mobile for IOS, frankly it seems like they've never updated it. We were promised a long time ago of fixed chat and a version that was compatible with all versions of IOS.
