What is the problem with this? I assume it's done by using the name
console command from your game client. I fail to see why
You can't change your in-game name with name in Orange Box engine games.

Hi all,
This was touched on in a previous post - Does anyone know a solution for MOTDs
not rendering (just a gray box, not even a background/plain text shows).
I've had this happen to me with both HTML motds and plain text contained in the
motd.txt file.
The weird things are that:
a) some
I found that I sometimes have to shut down or/and atleast wait a few
minutes before I'm able to read a new. Not sure if it's client side or
server (SRCDS) side.

If it helps, the MOTD itself is located here:

My lesson learned after trying countless of hours to write motd.txt:
if it works, don't touch it!
I have never experienced that the problem was the webpage to be shown itself.

I'm of the same mindset, but unfortunately we lost our old one during server
moves and upgrades, and the default one doesn't exactly cut it :)

This is an issue with the current engine. Nothing you can do other than
wait for valve.

I feared as much. Hopefully this gets fixed soon, as the community is in a bit
of a slump and we need some fresh blood :)

From what I gathered the name protection is one of those things that is
nice to have because it's easy to implement, but it usually won't happen
anymore; mostly because 'name' doesn't work in orangebox games.

There are many hacks that change your nickname without changing it on Steam
Community.
The detection is not perfect ATM though, because there are many server side
filters which cause your name to be a little different than the Steam one.
You can still check manually and see if the name is really
The blank MOTD issue has been there ever since the Pyromania update, my
guess is the updated HTML rendering engine has some glitches.

I hope this isn't for one of those really annoying HTML ads that some
degenerate servers have been abusing their players with.

Now this is ill informed post if I ever saw one - the ads in the MOTD are
not causing this issue. There have been instances when they had some bad ads
but they were quick to fix it. It's not a bad thing to want to recover
costs incurred for running well managed servers - people need to stop
No disprespect, but i disagree.
I think theres more going on in the back end than what you think.
I'm not going to name the server, but there is 1 i play on, and has that
crappy motd ad in it.
Even pressing the button to move on to the next window to enter the server,
the youtube video will still
None taken but this isn't the problem for HTML MOTD's not rendering - has
nothing to do with it.
I run these ads on mine which HELP pay for my servers - and I mean help as
they don't cover the full costs so I'm eating costs each month to give
people a free well managed batch of servers to play
Hah. Degenerate like the Official CS:GO servers?
Those ads are quite annoying but the op mentioned he's not running any
ads in the motd earlier.
