Ok, so how would one go about getting a copy of these editions? Jay, get a copy of the old Breitkopf Haertel Beethovens Werke edition. If you search at abebooks.com you'll find one inexpensively at Decorum Books in London (a very nice source for old music). Whatever the particular year

Dr. Thompson, I agree, we've probably conjectured this thing to death. But (you knew that was coming, didn't you?) you've used Beethoven's early orchestral horn parts and compared them with the Sonata part. Apples and oranges. I had in mind his early soloistic parts such as those in the

Just something that nobody has brought up: It seems that Beethoven's ego should come into play a bit, just in light of the fact that he would have never written a cello part to this piece if he didn't feel it a worthy melody. I do think that it was Beethoven's melody. It is a fairly early work,

This Beethoven thread is already getting a little old, but I had to add the following responses to the toughtful comments of the messages by S. Kirshner and Mr. James. First, Mr. James, I didn't say that I thought the cello part came first. That would imply that the piece wasn't originally for

I think there's a lot to be said for the notion that Punto wrote the horn part to the Sonata himself. If you look at any of the solo horn music that Punto wrote you will see that the part in the Sonata fits his own music like a glove. It's not the most interesting horn part going. And if you
