My German teacher and I were conversing and I found out she plays horn. She
told me that a friend had given her a horn and she knew it was a Holton. We
determined it is a Holton 177. I play on a Holton 179. We looked the specs up
online and it does not seem to have any differances. Does anyone

I feel that the bad press you folks are giving to the Holton horns is not fair to
'throw' at Rebecca.
She is hoping to find some instruments which the students can learn on, and I have not
been unhappy with the Holtons which I have used, for over 50 years, now!!

I am sure this is a mistake, but I'm going to put in my opinion on this topic
because I feel very strongly about it.
You can buy a very nice Holton, or Conn, or Yamaha for that matter, which
plays beautifully. They are all making very good, professional quality (yes,
professional quality)
. The 177 has been Old= Faithful for many years and I never could see a
difference bewteen it
and the many 179s around town.
Mostly bell throat size: 177=medium-throated bell;179 large throated
bell. At least according to the music supply books.

I offer my own experience and opinions for what it's worth. First of all, I
played on a Holton 179 for almost 30 years before purchasing a Conn 8D about
four years ago. I had many, many problems with the valve action, which got
worse as the horn got older. Fortunately, I found

Rider Music to solder dimes onto the ends of the levers, positioning the
coins so that they extend beyond the ends of the levers.
