Many thanks - I had been searching everywhere within Learn JOSM for
instructions - should have occurred to me to look under OSM. Thanks for
coming back to me so quickly

Best Wishes

Hi Andrew,

Whoops, hit send a little too quickly on that previous one.

You can try LearnOSM:

http://learnosm.org/en/josm/josm-adding-imagery/

It has pretty good step by step instructions. Please let us know if
that is not clear enough, either in the text or the images, or might
have gotten out of date.

Cheers,
Blake

[HOT] Maps for refugees

2017-03-15 Thread john whelan
It's not quite what we usually do but Syrian refugees are ending up in many
parts of the world. OSMand allows you to choose the language both for the
menus and for the map.

So in Ottawa all the street names are in English or French but I can search
for pharmacy in English or pharmacie if I'm using French menus. I assume
if the menus are set to Arabic then you can search for the equivalent
Arabic term. Can someone confirm you can do menu searches in Arabic in
OSMand?

Should this information be in a wiki somewhere? Can it be expanded on?

Thanks John

Re: [HOT] Broken (multi)polygon cleanup

2017-03-15 Thread Blake Girardot HOT/OSM
Hi Jochen,

Thank you very much for writing to the HOT list!

I think you will find a lot of enthusiasm for helping get these fixed
as well as improving our training and instructions to make sure we
minimize new mappers who come to OSM through HOT and Missing Maps
making these errors going forward.

Can you send me something that would help me see those 1600 examples
you found on OSM so I can see what might be going on and how to
improve things in HOT/MM workflow to reduce them?

Cheers,
Blake

[HOT] Broken (multi)polygon cleanup

2017-03-15 Thread Jochen Topf
Hi!

There are many broken (multi)polygon geometries in OSM data leading to
all sorts of problems. I have started an effort to get this cleaned up.
You can read more about this at http://area.jochentopf.com/ .

This effort has been running for about a month now and we can already see
some good results. See
https://github.com/osmlab/fixing-polygons-in-osm/issues/15
for some news about what's been happening.

I am writing to the HOT list today, because a not-so-small part of the
problems come from HOT mappers. For instance, looking at one particular
problem here (spikes in closed ways), I am seeing about 5800 errors, of
which about 1600 are in areas covered by the HOT tasking manager. (Of
couse not all of these have been done in the course of HOT mapping, but
probably most of them.)

I am reaching out to some of the regional OSM communities and also to
HOT, because I want to a) ask for the help of all the communities in OSM
to fix those errors and b) generally raise awareness, so those problems
can be minimized in the future.

Please go to the web sites linked above and read up on what the problems
are and how we are fixing them. I also want to offer my help in
preparing special data extracts or Maproulette challenges etc. to help
the HOT community participate in the cleaning up effort in a way that
makes sense to you. I could, for instance, put those 1600 errors
mentioned above in a special Maproulette challenge, if that would be a
good way for HOT mappers to work on them.

Tell me what you think. I appreciate any feedback.

Jochen

[HOT] Call for feedbacks - Study on NICT use in micro-projects for international aid

2017-03-15 Thread Violaine Doutreleau

Dear HOT/OSM community members,

CartONG, the French NGO dedicated to the use of mapping and information
management for humanitarian purposes, is carrying out a study about the
use of Information & Communication Technology in micro-project for
international aid (the project is conducted for the Agence des
Micro-Projets from La Guilde, a French micro-grants agency). The goal of
this study is to better understand projects from small and medium NGOs
(yearly turnover <250,000€) needs and identify the most effective
technologies or mobile applications to use.

So if you have ever taken part as a manager, partner, or participant in
a micro-project, if you use (or would like to use) ICT to leverage the
potential of your project, or if you would you like to share an
interesting initiative you are aware of, please take a few minutes to
fill in the study we have launched here:
http://survey.cartong.org/index.php?sid=83282=en

Your feedback will allow us to get a fair overview of the ecosystem and
will help small NGOs identify the tools & technologies most suited to
their need.

Thanks for your time!

Bests,
Violaine (CartONG)
