Jeff,
Well, there must be an issue with the way that the installer is detecting
gcc. Please do this:
1. cd into the hplip-2.x.x directory
2. run: ./install.py -i -a -g
3. copy the installer log output and post it here

No, I haven't seen that error that you saw before now.
One thing you can try is this:
1. Run the install using the .run file
2. Quit at the first prompt
3. cd into the hplip-2.x.x directory
4. Run ./check.py -t
5. Note the packages it is reporting needing to install
6. Run those package install c

i am using fedora 7.
at first i tried it as root, but it told me not to. so i have been
running as regular user. i saved the file just by downloading it from
firefox. well maybe i just opened it. i will try saving it now.
so this isnt a common problem then?

Not sure about gcc, but on the permissions thing - did you save the file or
run the .run as root? You should only make sure that your normal user
account is used to copy, download, and run the .run file.
What distro is this?
