Re: [IAEP] [Sugar-devel] Uruguayan XOs Revival

2023-06-30 Thread Ignacio Rodríguez
I would suggest reaching out to someone at Ceibal.
Fiorella Haim might be a great contact point: fh...@ceibal.edu.uy
I reached out to her a year ago and she mentioned that there are no more
XO's that are in good condition to be used.
I already gave all the ones I had to my friends, even made some tiktoks
videos that went viral (heh).

HMU if you want to do more stuff with the XO's beside unlocking them.
If it's just unlocking them by the "Lista negra" as Ceibal calls them, just
create a zip file with no content on the USB Drive.

Greetings

Hello there Lionel, awesome work as usual :)

I'm testing it on an iphone and a friend is testing on a android phone!

We are trying to use Calligra app but the touch responsiveness is really

+1 from me.
I know people tend to relate Sugar to OLPC, in fact I still do sometimes
(it's easier to explain someone that "Sugar" is the thing that runs in the
XO's).

But the icon should stay as it was.
If you want to change the icon for your deployments just change it (wasn't
that what you guys were trying to say?)

Thx

But I will leave SLOBs once this happen, I honestly don't have time, and I
no longer feel motivated to be part of the SLOBs.
I will remain as a Sugar Labs, and will mantain some systems if required.

I don't think this is that much needed.
Does Sugar Labs make a lot of transactions per month?

I don't think that paying for this task is something we need, maybe if Adam

 Hi All...

There was (and still seems to be) a lot of confusion regarding the
topic of a treasurer's report. I think the main problem is that most of you
are thinking of the SugarLabs "Books" (a big ledger will all the personal
identifying information Adam was referring to) instead of a simple
"Treasurers Report" which just includes the pertinent information without
all the identifying details. The former, the "books," should be available
to the SLOBs on request on a view only basis as mentioned elsewhere in this
thread. The latter, the Treasurer's Report, should be available to all
Sugar Labs members and other interested parties as appropriate.

Maybe it is all the years I have spent in many types of organizations
(4H, Girl Scouts, homeowner's organizations, teacher's orgs, Sierra Club
groups, etc.) that make this seem very familiar, simple, and
straightforward. Hopefully the information below can help make it work well
 for Sugar Labs as well.

A quick Google search turns up this list of criteria for a simple
monthly treasurer's report. It says it should include:

1. the name of the organization.
2. the period which the report covers.
3. the cash balance at the beginning of the period.
4. the income received during the period (with sources)
5. the expenses paid during the period (with what it was for and
who was paid ... name only, no PII).
6. the cash balance at the end of the period.
7. the signature of the treasurer.

Another easy to follow resource is this description of how to put such
 a report together: https://www.energizeinc.com/art/treasurers-report

(Note: the sample they refer to in this is missing... you have to buy
 the book to see it!).

Yesterday's financial report was very confusing and seeing Adam's email
just seemed to make it worse. Maybe going forward we can

but we can put some ideas in the wiki)

Re: [IAEP] GCI possible task

2016-11-26 Thread Ignacio Rodríguez
Task name: Port PLE activity to Sugarizer
Description: Using sugar-web and sugarizer structure, port PLE (Peru
Learns English) to sugarizer (~convert it to a web activity)
  Useful links:
   - https://github.com/llaske/sugarizer

Instance count: 1
Time to complete (in days): 4
Categories: Code, Outreach / Research

Mentors:
 - Ignacio Rodríguez
 - anyone else can mentor (add yourself if you want)

Is this "template" ok? (If it is I will add the task)
--

Can you remind me which activities where the "transformando" ones?
(My idea is kinda to use that template for each activity)

[IAEP] GCI 2016 meeting

2016-10-24 Thread Ignacio Rodríguez
Hi everyone!

GCI 2016 is near, and this year, like previous years it will be awesome if
we apply. But for this we need mentors and a list of tasks (the students
will come, thats for sure :)).

So, I would like to have a meeting to discuss this topic.

When? Tomorrow (25/10)
At what time? Well, I don't know. I would like to get replies in this email
about what time is good for you, if nobody replies I may have to chose a
time.
Where? irc (freenode) #sugar-meeting

You can join us using chat.sugarlabs.org :)

Count me in as mentor.

I got that package like a year ago, and its really cool! :D

Is not that easy to get it (you need to be a student), it took me few
months.

But was worth the wait

How much Mr. Bender is being compensated by OLPC for his work on Sugar or
OLPC related matters? On the OLPC web site he is listed as a contractor.
Mr. Cameron is also listed as a contractor. He is paid to provide support
to regional projects. Has Mr. Bender been paid or provided travel expenses
to promote either Sugar or OLPC since he publicly quite during his feud

Finally, a few projects worth mentioning:

Also I want to add few more things :)
* The Sugar Labs promo video [1]
* The new feature in Speak, the user can load a Image and create her own
face [2]
* The new Dropbox webservice [3]
* The new help pages [4]

I want to say 'thanks' to the mentors, we have done a lot of work, they
should be very exhausted! :)
as GCI 2013 student [and also 2014 student], this year was better, we got
new students, now some of these are 'friends'.
This year, like last, we tried to help new students :)

 == Sugar Digest ==

In schools, all hardware and software bestow agency on one of three
parties: the system, the teacher, or the learner. Typically, two of
these actors lose their power as the technology benefits the
third. Ask a group of colleagues to create a three-column table and
brainstorm the hardware or software in your school and who is granted
agency by each. Management software, school-wide grade-book programs,
integrated learning systems, school-to-home communication packages,
massive open online courses (MOOCs), and other cost-cutting
technologies grant maximum benefit to the system. Interactive
 whiteboards, worksheet generators, projectors, whole-class
simulations, plagiarism software, and so on, benefit the
teacher. Personal laptops, programming languages, creativity software,
cameras, MIDI keyboards, microcontrollers, fabrication equipment, and
personal web space primarily benefit (bestow agency to) the
 learner. -- Gary Stager

 1. Google Code-In. Wow. Finally a chance to catch my breath. Seven
intense weeks: 60 students completed more than 300 tasks for Sugar
Labs. The impact on Sugar Labs was even greater this year than in the
previous years we have participated: more diversity among the
participants, the mentors, the tasks, and a spirit of collaboration
while striving for excellence prevailed throughout the contest. Thanks
to Google and Stephanie Taylor for giving us this opportunity, to the
contestants who not only did great work but taught me a thing or two
along the way, and the mentors and community members who manned the
 IRC channel 24/7.

I want to acknowledge the Top Ten+ from whom we will be selecting our
finalists this week (results announce in early February):

Ignacio Rodríguez, Daksh, samdroid, cristian99garcia, Ezequiel
Pereira, svineet, Gtrinidad, Jas Park, Rafael Cordano, Richar, Sergio
Britos, Aishmita Kakkar, Gabriel Lee, et al.

Also, some mentors (and community members) deserve special
recognition: Andrés Aguirre, Daniel Francis, Gary Servin, Gonzalo
Odiard, James Cameron, Jorge Ramirez, Mariah Villarreal, Rajul,
Rodrigo Parra, and Martin Abente Lahaye.

Finally, a few projects worth mentioning:

 * Turtle Blocks JS plugins (Ignacio, samDroid, Daksh) [1]
 * Turtle Blocks guides (Jas Park) [2]
 * Activity reviews (Gabriel Lee) [3]
 * Dasher app (Cristian Garcia) [4]
 * Enhancements to Physics (Svineet) [5]
 * Sugar bugs squashed (Ezequiel) [6]
 * Butia Measure (Gtrinidad) [7]
 * Simple scrolling interface for Sugar (Rafael) [8]
 and much much more.

 2. As mentioned above, we have a number of new Turtle Blocks plugins
(for both the Python and Javascript versions) as a result of Google
Code-in. One of the more interesting inspirations for plugins comes
from mashape.com, a repository of APIs for everything from translation
services to a bicycle theft alert system. As Sugar becomes more
web-friendly, we can take advantage of web services and also
facilitate our users to craft their own tools and services. It is fun
 and empowering.

 === In the community ===

 3. The Free Software Foundation has put together a nice video on the
core ideas behind Free Software. See [9]

 === Tech Talk ===

 4. Xevents [10] is a TurtleBlocks plugin that makes it easy to design
different types of accessibility interfaces through a variery of
physical sensors types. It is being developed at FING by Andrés
Aguirre and Alan Aguiar and was the focus of some of the Google
 Code-in work of Rafael Cordano.

 5. For you OLPC XO 4 users, James Cameron has been working on enabling
the second processor. He reports about 38% improvement. For CPU tasks
like rendering, alt/tab, kernel compiles, the improvement is somewhat
more than 38%. For single threaded tasks that rely on memory
bandwidth, performance is lower because the memory controller is
shared between two cores. When asked how it impacts Sugar, he said
it feels faster and more responsive.

 6. Martin has announced

Re: [IAEP] [Sugar-devel] Local Labs Wikis was: Re: wiki.sugarlabs.org ongoing maintenance

2013-04-21 Thread Ignacio Rodríguez
I'm leaning to think the best option is to copy the pages that are good
from all {ar, co, cl, pe} wikis
into one single Sugar Labs / Laboratorios Azúcar América Latina instance.

+1 for the idea.
Maybe integrate Uruguay in SL pages {uy.sl.org?} ! [?]

2013/4/20 Sebastian Silva sebast...@fuentelibre.org

  Hi,
When I did maintenance and upgrade of co.sugarlabs.org the only
difference with the other local labs wikis,
was that it had some extensions related to vandalism prevention:

 from LocalSettings.php:

 #dirakx para los vandalos
 # icarito - File Not Found
 #require_once( $IP/extensions/TitleBlacklist/TitleBlacklist.php );
 require_once( extensions/CheckUser/CheckUser.php );
 #require_once( includes/DatabaseFunctions.php );
 require_once( $IP/extensions/bad-behavior/bad-behavior-mediawiki.php );

I had to disable the TitleBlacklist extension because I coudn't find it
and did not have the time to go
 fishing for it.

Perhaps this is a good opportunity to study what countermeasures / options
we have to fix this issue,
which is particularly grave for local labs wikis.

I'm cc'ing Rafael (dirakx) who originally configured these countermeasures
 for co.sl.org.

I'm leaning to think the best option is to copy the pages that are good
from all {ar, co, cl, pe} wikis
into one single Sugar Labs / Laboratorios Azúcar América Latina instance.

This would reduce the maintenance burden and maybe revitalize /
 consolidate our spanish speaking
 community a bit more?

 Regards,
 Sebastian

Re: [IAEP] [Sugar-devel] More new stuff in Make Your Own Sugar Activities1

2013-01-07 Thread Ignacio Rodríguez
Link to book: http://en.flossmanuals.net/make-your-own-sugar-activities

2013/1/7 James Simmons nices...@gmail.com

I just re-published the FLOSS Manual *Make Your Own Sugar Activities!*
Several people did updates this weekend. Lionel Laské wrote a new Guest
Chapter on* Developing Sugar Activities Using HTML5.* Daniel Francis put
the finishing touches on ***Making contributions to Sugar. *I even did
some revisions to* Setting Up a Sugar Development Environment.* And there
is more good stuff to come. We should have a chapter on using WebKit in
your Activities, and possibly one on using the accelerometer that newer
XO's have in your Activities. And of course I will bring all the chapters
 I wrote up to date.

All of this Activity has come from the Google Code-In (in Lionel's case
it was indirect, as he offered to help someone in GCI finish his chapter).
However, the book can use new content from authors of all ages. If you
have an idea for a Guest Chapter why not share it, or better still write
 the chapter yourself?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the manual.

 James Simmons

Re: [IAEP] [Sugar-devel] Sugar Digest 2012-10-27

2012-10-28 Thread Ignacio Rodríguez
 is the
message”, how do you think technology will evolve in the coming years?
All forms of communication and information will be the material itself
rather than a separate physical device.: McLuhan was wrong. The
message is the message. We use different media to deliver it, more or
 less intact.

 2. Sugar Labs is applying to Google Code-in (GCI), a contest for
pre-university students (e.g., high school and secondary school
students) with the goal of encouraging young people to participate in
 open source.

Why we are applying? Sugar is written and maintained by volunteers,
who range from seasoned professionals to children as young as 12-years
of age. Children who have grown up with Sugar have transitioned from
Sugar users to Sugar App developers to Sugar maintainers. They hang
out on IRC with the global Sugar developer community and are
full-fledged members of the Sugar development team. It is this latter
group of children we hope will participate in and benefit from Google
Code-in. Specifically we want to re-enforce the message that Sugar
belongs to its users and that they have both ownership and the
responsibility that ownership implies. Just as learning is not
something done to you, but something you do, learning with Sugar
ultimately means participating in the Sugar development process. At
Sugar Labs, we are trying to bring the culture of Free Software into
the culture of school. So the Code-in is not just an opportunity for
us to get some tasks accomplished, it is quintessential to our overall
 mission.

Learn more about GCI [1] and the Sugar Labs GCI effort [2].

 3. Agustin Zubiaga Sanchez noted that last week we passed the
threshold of more than eight million activities downloaded from the
Sugar Labs activity portal [3]. I echo his sentiment that I'm very
glad to be a sugarlabs developer. Congratulations to all the team :)

 === In the community ===

 4. Last weekend was the OLPC SF summit [4] in San Francisco, which was
followed by a three-day Sugar Camp. Although I missed opening day, Day
Two was quite interesting in that there was a lot of good discussion
about how to sustain and grow the various volunteer-run OLPC/Sugar
deployments. At Sugar Camp, although not much code was written, there
was an opportunity to get tangible and actionable feedback from the
likes of Mark Bradley (we pushed hard on Turtle Art as a multimedia
toolkit). I also had the opportunity to catch up with Raul Gutierrez
 Segales, Ivan Krstić, and others.

 === Tech Talk ===

 5. The little coding I did do in San Francisco was in support of
migrating more activities to touch. Specifically, I worked on
integrating the on-screen keyboard into several of my activities:
Portfolio and Turtle Blocks. The challenge was that I was using
key-press events directly, rather than accessing them through a GTK
widget such as a Entry or TextView. With help from Raul, I managed to
get things working pretty well: basically, I just drop a TextView
widget under the cursor where I expect keyboard input. The details are
outlined here [5]. I'm generally pleased with the results, but there
is a bit of fine-tuning of the interaction, e.g, you need to defocus
the TextView in order to dismiss it: not such a burden, but at times,
 somewhat awkward.

 6. Ignacio Rodriguez has been on a tear, helping me to migrate
activities to GTK 3. Over the past week, we converted: Card Sort,
Cookie Search, Color Deducto, Deducto, Flip, Fraction Bounce, Loco
Sugar, Napier's Bones, Nutrition, Paths, Pukllananpac, Recall,
Reflection, GNUChess, Sliderule, Story, Yupana, and XO Editor. I also
worked with Agustin Zubiaga on Portfolio, Flavio Denesse on Ruler, and
Daniel Francis on Turtle Blocks. Whew.
