last time I talked to the NYSCATE folks I had a booth for the RIT game
dept again this year. Last year and this year I will be showcasing
our OLPC efforts in that booth and am happy to use it to support the
efforts in any way I can.

I can do the Sugar for Math if you like. Unless there's a heavier
hitter. I don't mind talking in front of a group. In fact I was an
instructor with the American Red Cross for a number of years so I don't
have much stage fright

I could modify my EdTech day talk fairly easily.

Ok so we have 3 Presentations and 3 Slots for each to fill in.

http://www.nyscate.org/conference_rfp.cfm?confid=27

1. General Hands-on Sugar for Learning

   - Presenter 1: Caroline Meeks
   - Presenter 2:
   - Presider:

2. Sugar for Math Hands On

   - Presenter 1:
   - Presenter 2: Caroline Meeks
   - Presider:

3. 50 Minute Introduction to Sugar

   - Presenter 1:
   - Presenter 2:
   - Presider: Caroline Meeks ?

I'm not a big stand up and do the powerpoint person. Perhaps Steve Jabobs,
who does this format of lecture for a living would be a good 50-minute
lecture presenter choice. By November I will have probably done 2 or 3 at
least hands on workshops so I'm happy to help with those.

That being said, I think the more different names we can put up the more
chances we have to have additional slots. So please people volunteer. Also
if someone has another 50 minute presentation topic they think would be of
interest to teachers, if we have more presentors we can have more talks. I
also think that specific talks can be more interesting then general
introductions. Perhaps "Using Sugar to support teaching 4th Grade Math"

Thanks,

Oh Come on, it won't even be high season for snow yet. We're still
getting rain in November and if it does snow it won't be that much.
Besides if any DPW can deal with a little snow it's ours.

If you need someone who's not going to freak out driving in snow, just
give me a call and I'll make sure you all arrive safely.

I talked to the NYSCATE organizers late last week. Once they get over
the shock of a bunch of Sugar contributors wanting to come to the
_teachers_ to see what they want, and need, from a Learning Platform,
I think things will go really well!

Hi Karlie,

Its looking like Rochester is going to be a hotbed of Sugar development. We
are hoping to co-locate a Sugar conference with NYSCATE.

Given that I think we should really go for it on in terms of presentations.
My thought is lets propose two hands on 3 hour workshops. Using Sugar in
the Elementary School Classroom and another specializing in Using Sugar in
Math Instruction. Lets also sign up for a 1 hour lecture format session on
Sugar.

Who else is going to be there? Is there someone from Math4 group who can be
Presentor 1 for the Math Class?

Thanks,

I hope to start getting our ducks in a row over the next couple of

We have a meeting tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of May 18.
When we firm things up, I'll post a note at
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Math4Team/Meetings

At that point we'll have final projects from the RIT students and I
should have more info on what's been made and/or what point things are
at. If needed I'll assign work teams to pick up where the RIT kids left
off so we'll have activities in various forms of completion to show case.

Some that will be ready for early tests and feedback, others that will
be very rough around the edges.

2009-05-05 Thread Caroline Meeks
Hi Karlie,

Walter and I are doing a talk at a similar show MassCUE (computer using
educators) Oct 28-29th. I think we are just signed up for a 1 hour talk.

We will be doing 9 hours over 3 days of professional development using an
existing computer lab and SoaS in August in Worchester, MA.

If you do a hands on session you could have people bring a laptop and use
SoaS.

We should work together to create a 3-hour curriculum on using Sugar in a
math curriculum highlighting some of the results of your 4th grade math
project. It would be great to take teachers through examples of activities
already aligned with curriculum standards to making their own activities.

What is the time frame on the 4th grade project? When would be a good time
to look at results?

Thanks!
Caroline

[IAEP] NYSCATE - Nov 2009 in Rochester NY

2009-05-05 Thread Karlie Robinson
Good afternoon everyone.
Charles Profitt has me thinking a lot about he New York State
Association for Computers and Technologies in Education Trade show in
Rochester NY, November 22-24, 2009. As Chas explains, if technology
isn't pitched at NYSCATE, it won't even be on the radar for districts in
NY State.
While I could complete the RFP for a 1 hour talk, I'd like to do
something spectacular if we could.
So would anyone like to come to Rochester with your XOs and help lead a
3 or 6 hour hands on session? If so, what should we present for 3 hours?
I need ideas!

Thanks in advance for your help,
Karlie
