Thanks Jim, that answers a number of questions. However, I have not been able
to find information on

(apparently) goes to the second volume, the return value from NOTE starts
over at 1.
I'm at a loss. Everything I read says this is supposed to work and I am
sure I have something missing, I just can't figure out what.

I would like to be able to pass a string to the IBM C/C++ compiler to include
in a program. I have tried every way I can think of to use the DEFINE()
compiler option but can't make it work. This is what I would like to do:

set up SCLM to control PARMLIB, PROCLIB, and some other system libraries
through a set of exits. Mainly for version history, but also as part of our
