The SYNCSORT Key process is documented.
I used to just copy the old key out, update the current dataset with the new
key, then tell the Syncsort Task to refresh the key. It does happen
automatically but you can have it happen with a command.

Your approach is fine. I run the key update job right away to make sure
any syntax errors are caught right away rather than at 12AM. If the key
dataset is used on multiple CPUs, the key update job needs to be run on
each CPU that is getting a new code. There can be multiple codes in
