Do you mean that different data sets are cataloged in different catalogs?
Or that a data set might be cataloged in different catalogs on different LPARs?

I agree with the recommendation to create a new volume with the new name and
move the data sets to it.

You have gotten good replies and warning about the complexities.

I concur with Kees. Do your moves first and then when you have an empty volser,
vary it offline and rename that volser. Of course, check for usage and ENQs.

Are these datasets shared across different LPARs on the same or different
Catalogs?

Are they [or rather the volser] shared between more than one SysPlex?

Only if you want to use the catalog to find the datasets later. And you should
perform the uncatalog before the rename. The block command feature in ISPF 3.4
make both tasks very easy.

If the volume is managed by SMS, you will need to convert it to unmanaged
before the uncatalog and convert it back after the recatalog

Yes, and if they are vsam or complex vsam structures (AIX etc) it will be quite
complicated.
It is simples to create a volume with the new name and move the datasets to the
new volume. The utility (DMS, DSS, FDR) will take care of the recatalog work.

Kees.
