Do you mean that different data sets are cataloged in different catalogs? Or that a data set might be cataloged in different catalogs on different LPARs? I agree with the recommendation to create a new volume with the new name and move the data sets to it. -- Tom Marchant -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

I concur with Kees. Do your moves first and then when you have an empty volser, vary it offline and rename that volser. Of course, check for usage and ENQs. Re: reformat volume id
Only if you want to use the catalog to find the datasets later. And you should perform the uncatalog before the rename. The block command feature in ISPF 3.4 make both tasks very easy. If the volume is managed by SMS, you will need to convert it to unmanaged before the uncatalog and convert it back after the recatalog > -Original Message- > From: IBM Mainframe Discussion ListOn Behalf > Of ibmm...@foxmail.com > Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2018 12:21 AM > To: IBM-MAIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU > Subject: reformat volume id > > Hi all > > We want to change a volume id from xx to yy using reformat command. > > Our question : > > After changing volume id, we online the volume. > > Because there are many datasets, do we need to uncatalog each dataset on the > volume and > then recatalog them? -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
Re: reformat volume id
Yes, and if they are vsam or complex vsam structures (AIX etc) it will be quite complicated. It is simples to create a volume with the new name and move the datasets to the new volume. The utility (DMS, DSS, FDR) will take care of the recatalog work.
